I need help... Well, maybe more like I need inspiration. I have a few original table layouts made, and they are really fun to play, however they have no theme, so no rules. They are just empty playfields, hitting ramps, and dropping targets with no point.

So I am looking for some suggestions on an original table.

Maybe somebody has an idea, but no table and we can collaborate?

PM me if you want to keep your idea secret

Are these layouts em style, SS style? Ramps or platforms? Sunken Playfield? DMD or not?

I have starting artwork for three original themes I'm choosing between for my next project. I tend not to do licenced themes so much these days, so these are not themes people will have preconceived ideas on except for one, which is ancient myth based.

If you pm a screenshot, I'll suggest one if it fits and can donate the art I have for you to work from. If you like it great, if not, we can talk about other ideas.

Well i guess I should be more specific. My tables all use JP's serious sam 2 tables scripting, but do not share the layout. So technically I guess they could be considered SS tables. They also incorporate JP's DMD for scoring. All have ramps, rails, drop targets, ball lock, multiballs, playfield bonus, ball save, impulse plunger, etc.
My most recent layout is 75% ripped from a modern Stern table, with HEAVY modifications. I would post a screenshot, but I kind of dont want to let that cat out of the bag until I find a theme to put on it.

Hi.

My original idea was to make a version of the Timeshock table! of Pro Pinball, using all the potential of VPX, trying to get the most out of VPX and make a comparison with the original version (not the latest version) of the original game. What would have happened if this table had been programmed in VPX?

Then I thought about making an original theme, using the original Timeshock PF as a base! and finally I discarded it. The theme was going to be 80's animated cartoons "THUNDARR, the Barbarian", a mix of high technology, magic, laser swords, post-apocalyptic mutants, etc. (a blonde Conan with a lightsaber) XDD

For those who don't know him, he is this guy:

Then I thought about Time Gal, the laser disc game, with time travel, and that in a way was also in keeping with the original table. Also discarded.

This is the version of the end point where I abandoned the project. It needs ramps, a diverter in the central hexagon and various other things, such as audio, etc.
You will also have to code all the rules and video modes.

It's playable for fun, but should be considered a pre-demo in its current state.

I hope it helps you, and that whoever wants to use it for their own projects does so freely for their own projects.

Greetings.

Ok. For that style I'd be comfortable with this theme. It was my favourite of the three I was considering, so if you don't want it I'll still use it myself: The Legend of Beowulf. See attached art and if it inspires you I can send you some source files to get you going.

I was thinking tasks on the table in sequence to perform key actions from the story -

Travel to Heorot
Grendel attacks
Slay Grendel
Grendel's mother attacks
Slay Grendel's mother
Return home to Heartland
Take the throne
Enraged dragon attacks (somebody stole it's good cup)
Engage it in battle
Retainers flee, wiglaf comes to your aid.
Kill the dragon
Name wiglaf as your successor (Beowulf dues,)
Receive hero's burial

Completing all those will activate wizard mode. Each one could trigger a mode for the next, or all be available, depending on your rules.

I really hope I dont come off as sounding ungrateful for suggestions I've received both here and through PM's, but like anything else, if you are going to invest time into something, you have to be passionate about it. Especially considering the amount of time it takes to make an original table. I'm not really interested in anything anime or the like. I would need to have a working knowledge of the subject matter for any theme I chose, and anime stuff isn't in my wheelhouse.
Please keep the suggestions coming though please. I would really like to get inspired soon.

I may suggest a theme about racing cars? Or dinosaurs? Or some creepy/monster theme? Or a space theme? Like Star Wars or Star Trek, everybody loves to shoot at dinosaurs, Klingons, X-Wings or Storm troopers and with Darth Vader as the main shot :D

I say combine them all into one big battle Royale.

Yes! The battle we all waited for: :D

Star Trek vs. Star Wars

Phasers vs. Lightsabers
Telepaths vs. the force

So I am looking for some suggestions on an original table.

I like tables with magic, like Pinball Magic or Theatre of Magic. I feel that it fits good to pinball. Making balls disappear, magnetic trickery, ...

To use already available resources (pictures, music, animations, ...): take any movie or TV series you like.

Those are all good suggestions. I like the idea of a Darth Vader table. Or just the Dark side and use all the bad guys from the franchise. Maul, Vader, Snoke Kylo Ren, Dooku, Sidious etc.
Most of the time I get an idea, and start looking at resources, and get stuck due to lack of pictures, artwork, etc and stop. It seems I always get stuck at the playfield artwork. That's where I'm stuck on my Alice in Wonderland table. It just needs art and someone to help me downscale the 3d models

I would definitely choose a theme that you're passionate about, and try not to get bogged down with the art. I would love to be able to create my own art but I don't have that skill so I focus on trying to be 'artistic' with the available material I can find online.

No matter how good your table looks, it has to be enjoyable to play.

This for sure. That fanciest prettiest table won't get played if the layout doesn't work and gameplay isn't fun. There have been plenty of authors who opted for a minimalist look, with a lot of blank space around a simple image, and still had a popular table like that.

If you can't get enough artwork, and don't like large blank areas with a "sticker" image, I would pick something you like, put the best single image you can find in the centre of the Playfield, and use shapable lights in the editor to experiment with shot markings/guidelines until you find a design that works for you. Screenshot that as a guide, then go to town making a pretty version of it in pain.net, or gimp, or whatever software you prefer. The table theme doesn't have to smother the layout, just be present on the main viewable area, and evident in your rules and table item names. You can make an attractive Playfield filling the rest of the area in this way. In fact, this technique is something like a lot of popular tables where rows of lights are used to the same effect.

I did this in old VP tables a lot, like dirty pair and Fullmetal alchemistmist

Hello everyone.

I suddenly remembered the card game "Smash Up." All against all, but combined.

Simple rules (explode base cards reaching the maximum breaking point of the base) adding the combined power of the minions (of all the players) and the action cards, combining two very colorful and picturesque factions such as: ninja fairies, transformers zombies, pirate kaijus, pokemon jedi, etc.

That is the game:
