Here's my hardware:

Pico 4

RTX 4090

i5-12600k

32GB DDR5

Software

Virtual Desktop

SteamVR

VPX-GL (latest build)

What I am struggling with are the VPX settings.  From what I can tell, the standard Preferences->Video/Graphics have no effect in VR.  In the VR Settings, What should I be using for AA, SS?

In virtual desktop I am using HIGH graphics, with the Snapdragon Resolution enhancement, and SSW set to automatic.  I am using H.264+ codec running at 400Mb/s.  I am also using the color enhancement setting and 90FPS

In SteamVR, I am using mostly all defaults.  With the default scaling of 100% I am getting around 3160 x 3160 per eye, which from what I've researched seems to be where I need it to be

In NVidia Control Panel, I have a custom profile for VPX-GL64 with the only change from the defaults being Prefer Maximum Performance.

While in-game, my input latency is around 4ms.  This is significantly higher than my 2D experience with Frame Pacing (<1ms), and it does have an impact on my play, especially since I go back and forth.  If I turn off all of the features in VPX VR Settings, I can get it down to around 2.9ms

I would appreciate ANY help with optimizing these settings!

 -G

Besides the counters from VPx. Do yiu experiences any lag or input latency ?
Fo myself I experience lag if I use Virtual Desktop and the steam vr. If I use open composite all is butter smooth in VR.
Ionly check if I reach 90 fps within VR,
Woth steam ver all is shoeing 90fps, wifi on 780 mbs but still lagging.
I'm not checking latency if game runs fine. For me the fps is the trigger

Hi Mike!

Yes, I've been struggling with this for a while now.  What I have found is that the HEVC 10-bit is far superior to H264/H264+ even though it supports a higher bitrate.  The more stable your bitrate is, the smoother the experience.  Another thing to do is make sure your texture size is not unlimited in VPX.  This is one of the few settings in the regular settings that can impact VR.  You want them no higher than 3K depending on your GPU.  You can probably get away with 2K depending on your headset.  This helps a lot by freeing up your GPU RAM.  on VD, make sure to enable video buffers.

I realize Im answering my own question, but I now know a lot more about how the render chain works, and it does a lot to inform decisions on where to optimize and where to compromise.

Hey MrGrynch,

I followed some discord conversations from you on different channels, and looks like you figured out how to setup VD with openxr and skip steam vr.

Tbh, i didn't spend any time on it yet, but are you willing to share the steps, software that you compiled etc to the community as well?

Thanks

I stumbled on this a year later and while I'm not op I hope I can help anybody else who needs to figure this out!

EDIT: THIS POST HAS GREAT INFO ALSO https://vpuniverse.c...ndComment-83250

In the desktop client for virtual desktop go the options tab and choose VDXR for the OpenXR Runtime, then launch Virtual Desktop and while in desktop view (no steamvr or no game running, just seeing the desktop in vr view) start you VR vpx table with vpxlauncher (super useful for VR) and it should start automatically.
