Greetings all -

Over the weekend, I tried to upgrade my Cabinet to play VPX games.  Currently I'm using PinballX on the frontend and playing VPT games.  There are a number of machines in VPX format that aren't in VPT format that I would like to play.

After a few hurdles - and lots of help from the people here (thank you!), I got Visual Pinball X version 8 up and running.

First game out of the bunch (Escape from the Lost World) worked perfectly.  As I started testing other games, though, I ran into various errors.  One, I just refer to as the "White Screen of Death" where the entire playfield goes white and I can't do anything.  Nothing works and I end up having to hard-boot the machine.  Occasionally I would get this message:  Visual Pinball Fatal Error - Fatal Error D3D344_DEVICEHUNG (0x88760874:  Hardware adapter reset by OS) at D:\a\vpinball\RenderDevice.cpp:1261

Some games start out perfectly and then error out with the above error.

I'm completely fine testing every game that I've downloaded but...really don't like hard-booting after the "White Screen of Death" shows up (one time it was the "Pink Screen of Death."

In my research I'm seeing things like:  "Update DirectX" or upgrade my video card driver.

I'm running Windows 7.

Thoughts?

Thanks!

Open VPX but do not open a table.  Go to Preferences > Video/Graphics Options.  Click the button "Set for Low End PC".  Now try a table that will not play.  If it works then you can leave the settings as is or tweak it a little higher.  Play a table after every tweak.  If it still does not play then turn the Max Texture and Element Details down further.  If it still doesn't play then you probably need to upgrade your hardware.

Make sure your drivers are up to date as well.

Check out my website for any latest updates or information on current builds that I am working on.

Thanks so much.  I will give that a try.

Another table I was looking forward to play was "Triple Action" aka "Star Action" as I remembered playing it with my girlfriend at the local roller rink.  Sadly, that game had an issue.

Plus "Big Guns" in VPX format looks substantially better than in the VPT format but it, too, didn't work.  Sadly.

I will attempt to update my drivers, too.

Matt

I was finally able to find time in my schedule to give this a try.  Every tweak I tried did not work.  Well...they worked, kinda.  I was able to play "Big Guns" all the way through and THEN it crashed and rebooted my computer.  I went ahead and changed the "Set for Low End PC" all the way to the bottom only, again, to run into the same issue of crashing and rebooting the computer.  I'm not even getting error screens now.

I'm guessing it's a graphics card/memory issue and will move forward to try and replace those.

Thanks, again, for your assistance.  Nice to feel there's a support group out there willing to help.

Matt

What is your hardware?

Have you tried reinstalling video drivers and directX 9.0c ?

If you feel the need to empty your wallet in my direction, i don't have any way to receive it anyways

My hardware is a NVIDIA GeForce 210 and a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660

I've gone ahead and downloaded the drivers and the DirectX, though one driver says it includes DirectX Version 11.  I've also tried to make sure I've downloaded Windows 7 versions as I don't have Windows 10.

What's frustrating is that the other day I was able to play "Escape from the Lost World" PERFECTLY.  Tonight I tried it and it crashed.  The other day I couldn't play "Big Guns" - tonight I played it all through the three balls and THEN it crashed.  I would THINK that if this was a driver or DirectX issue, it would crash immediately as it does with some other games.  The fact that it has allowed me to play, sometimes with no problems whatsoever, that it's more of a memory issue but I could be wrong.

Thanks again.

Matt

Hi I have the same problem too, I'm playing in VR, but sometimes black screen and pc crashes. My specs Interl I7 12600K 32GB RAM RTX 3070 TI.

And now some tables with b2s don't load with 10.80 r.1314 and VPX crashes too.

Regards!

Thank you very much Jino0372. I'm on a 12 year old laptop and set for low end pc trying Last Action Hero. Got the Hardware adapter reset/ RenderDevice:1261 error a second time. After decreasing max textures one notch from 2048 to 1024, I was able to play the table.
