First, sorry for being such a noob... I don't know if it's been answered before...

My setup for playing VP is the simplest of all: desktop, single screen landscape, Windows 11, RTX3060, etc.

I don't want to move permanently to VPX 10.8 while it's still beta, but I'd like to try it's features without having to uninstall VPX 10.7.

What would be the best/simplest way to do it? DX9 or OpenGL?  32 or 64-bit?

Any help is welcome.

If you now run 10.7 on 32 bit, just download the vpinballx 32 bit version.
Download gl and dx9 version and put both in a new directory (so seperated from your 10.7.x files).
Running vpinballx.exe (or gl) will use vpinmame and directb2s and you can play arround with both versions.
But you need to launch the exe and load the table (or change your frontend to the new directory)

I use the same directory, as all the VP versions can be in the same directory. I just simply rename the VPX8 exe file to VpinballX8.EXE and I overwrite all the other files, and the dll files and the script are always backwards compatible.

You will notice that you already have VP9 and VP8 in the same folder.

I also make a copy of the VPX7 exe file as vpinballx7.exe in case I overwrite the exe file :) Later VPX8 will be the default exe and you have the older vpx7 in case some table need to be run on that version.

Where did you find the vpx8 minimal installer? I've searched and can't seem to find it. I was told not to go to github a day ago and to download vpx installers here instead. Github has various vpx8 installs. What one is proper? Thanks.

There is no installer for VPX8 that I am aware of.  It is still in beta testing.  Just follow JP's instructions above.  It is what I did and all is well.

I came here: https://github.com/v...inball/releases. Downloaded both versions 32-bit, DX9 and OpenGL. Created a separate folder where I decompressed the contents in two separate subfolders (one for the DX9 and another for OpenGL). Double-clicked the exe file and selected the directory with JP's new VPX8 tables. Worked just fine.

Now I have VPX7 and VXP8 beta running alongside.

Use the installer from here for 10.7.2
reason, so you get your reg entries etc created

THEN go to github
grab latest 10.8 from ACTIONS

and unzip it over top of the 10.7.2 installation

The Betas do not have an installer yet

because they are betas

If you feel the need to empty your wallet in my direction, i don't have any way to receive it anyways

Spend it on Hookers and Blow

I was having issues with a fresh install from the vpx turorial here, errors and instant shutdown of vpx when opening a table. I asked if i should go to github and download and install vpx 7.2 and xenonph told me to download a minimal version here instead and when prompted simply overwrite my existing fresh install. It was simple and worked.

"Download version 10.7.3 here...

Note: Pick VPinballX73_Minimal.zip

https://www.vpforums...&showfile=11572

Copy contents of zip file into Visual Pinball folder and overwrite when asked."

I already have 7.3 installed. So I head to github, then

choose this? Visual Pinball X 10.8.0 beta 4

Then I have this list, which one?

Choose a file with the word "release" in the name.  Then you need to choose either 64 bit or 32 bit depend on what version you are currently running.  9 times out of 10 you need the 32 bit.  You can then choose the GL version or not.  Bottom line....download this one:

It's more than likely what you need.
