File Name: VR 360 Skybox - Water Dungeon

File Submitter: Gravy

File Submitted: 27 Feb 2023

File Category: Visual Pinball VR

Author(s): Gravy
Manufacturer: Other - Not a Pinball
Year: 2023
Permission to MOD?: Yes, without approval

Experimenting with Ai creation of 360 VR Skybox using https://skybox.blockadelabs.com/

Output image has been first upscaled by 200% by an Ai upscaler and then downscaled to 4096x2048

Would be suitable for any dark or medieval themed table such Medieval Madness, Black Knight etc.

If there is any interest in me creating more or if you want one to suit the theme of a particular table then let me know. Or have a try yourself and add to the community resources.

I note that there is not really a suitable category for this file so have added it to Visual Pinball VR category.

Ah lol. I tried some words en indeed. Nice 360 degrees photos. Now i need to find a way to get this into a vr room. I just finished one (with a normall room), but I get a nice result as well from skybox.

Suggest just finding an existing table with a 360 VR room image and swap the 360 texture file to this one or another that you create yourself. For instance try Monster Bash VPW mod.

Then in the image manager for Monster Bash, look for vr_360 and swap it out with your new image. You'll also need to enable the 360 room switch in the script for that table. This may give you an idea of how to implement into other tables. There is probably also a tutorial somewhere?? Maybe ask flupper1 on here for some tips?

If you make your own 360 images, try upscaling them first by 200% in an ai upscaler such as https://imgupscaler.com/

Then reduce the image dimensions in Gimp/Photoshop back down to a true 2:1 ratio of 4098x2048 (I have already done that for this dungeon image). The output from skybox generator us not quite true 2:1 (skybox currently outputs 3146x1536 but they are working on increasing this so may change over time).

If you just want to check out the 360 files outside of VPX and have an Oculus/Meta Quest 2, and have enabled developer mode and have Sidequest working to enable you to upload files to your Quest, copy your skybox 360 image files into the Quest's DCIM folder, restart your quest and open the inbuilt "TV" app. Tell it to load your files and then select whatever 360 you uploaded. Note that if you don't resize the images to 2:1 and upscale them beforehand they will appear a little blurry and will likely have a thin black seam line where the wraparound occurs. Adjusting images to 2:1 and 4096x2048 will fix this and give you a clearer image.

The Skybox Blockadelabs guys have a Discord channel worth joining at https://discord.com/invite/kqKB3X4TJz

Lastly, I should mention that whilst I do have a Quest 2, I don't have a PC powerful enough to run VPX in VR yet so cant really help out more in that regard. The only VR pinball I have played is the Pinball FX series native to Quest.

A bit of an update on the skybox generator. Seems they have now implemented a higher res 6144x3072 output at true 2:1 so no longer need to upscale or resize the ratio. Awesome

Another tip, if you have a Quest, go directly to the https://skybox.blockadelabs.com website in the Quest browser and make your panorama from the device itself, then save it, open up the Quest TV app. Select your file you just saved and change the display method to 2d 360 and you will be quickly able to view anything you make directly in VR. I've suggested to the developers that they should consider adding a webxr 360 viewer directly on their website to remove the addition TV step.

nice one! played around with it a bit the last days and I'm impressed what it can produce! The skyboxes are working well in (and for) VPX VR and the higher resolution is very welcome for sure!

Only the guidance could be a bit better though, it's base, stable diffusion as they say, is listening better at the words you throw at it.this one seems to ignore a lot. it maybe needs a scale value slider to control that..

Yeah they have an API available so might be able to tailor it more using that, however I agree that it seems a bit same same with a lot of the stuff it produces so I feel it's training data may be a bit limited at the moment. It ignores a lot of stuff in a prompt. They are quickly updating stuff based on user feedback though so I feel it will rapidly get better. They are also in the process of fixing some of the stitching/ghosting issues in the seams.

I saw quite a cool little demo pano tour put together with some of its output, using some software called pano2vr. https://vtour.cloud/c0ri5xnp/lwenb1lw/

Another issue is that the images skybox produces do not have correct meta data for panorama, so you need to tell it to show in 360 2d mode in TV app on Quest, doesnt do it automatically. A way around this is to run the image through a exif fixer app and then it will automatically work. Someone on their discord suggested they add it as a feature, in the meantime you can use this https://exiffixer.com/online.htm

Suggest also joining the discord for blockadelabs.
