Strikes N' Spares (Gottlieb 1995) Alternate Dual Mode Backglass

This is NOT to be confused with Strikes and Spares (Bally 1978).

The original Strikes N' Spares table / games uses a DOUBLE DMD screen - so using a RealDMD in a cab is impossible because the images overlap, so I made my own special backglass withe a double DMD area that fits the virtual DMD nicely.

The original backglass / panel was visually "uninteresting" and I wanted to make a "fun" backglass for a very fun VPX table made by 32assassin.

Backglass has Dual Mode built in:

Authentic Mod: Turn ON feature an stays continuously lit.

Fantasy Mod: Various looping lighting animations.

RIGHT-CLICK on the backglass to change the mode from Authentic (default) to Fantasy if you want to see the lighting animations.

Also includes is a new HiRez wheel PNG image.

Rename the backglass file to the EXACT same name as your table file.

Optimized / scaled for 16x9 backglass monitors.

This project took considerable time ... so "thanks" or comments in the support topic would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Hi Rez! Looking forward to trying this...your right...the dmd images on a real dmd are tough to read. I never knew why until you explained why here. You learn something new every day. This should resolve that problem. Thanks very much!

Ok...downloaded and installed...looks great! Apologize for what is probably a beginners question, but as I have a pindmd3 I dont do much of this. Once i have the virtual dmd dragged onto the BG and in the dmd window, how do I adjust the virtual dmd to fit perfectly in the window? Thank you

Edit: Nevermind...figured it out...right click on dmd and could then adjust size.
Love this! Finally a legible dmd display for this table...also love the hot chick in the short skirt. 😉

- Load and Start Table

- Press F1 Key

- UNCHECK "Use External DMD Device" then CHECK "Show Virtual DMD"

- Click ‘OK’ to save these changes. VERY IMPORTANT!

- This will force the table / rom to show the virtual DMD.

- Restart the table and the Virtual DMD should be on one of your screens

- Drag the Virtual DMD to the space on the backglass

- RIGHT-CLICK on the DMD and resize it to fit in the space on the backglass.

Remember to then select ‘Game Options’ and click ‘OK’ so it will then save that position for that DMD for that particular table.

Also, I don’t know if this happens for everyone, but is sometimes does for me, but you have to completely quit the VPX app for any DMD changes to take effect. If I just keep hitting F3 to reboot the table – sometimes (not often) none of the changes I’ve made happen. It isn’t until I completely quit do they then take effect. This has happened with this table and baby pack man and others that use oddly shaped DMD sizes.

If you want to make the really cool - RIGHT click on the backglass and set the Backglass to FANTASY mode instead of Authentic. Click Save.

If you are using Freezy's DMD device 1.7.1 or higher - then press F1 again and select "Colorize" DMD - select the 100% color and set it to WHITE and then then middle color swatch to a darker ORANGE. Press OK and Save and restart the table.

This colorizing (white text with orange outline) make the DMD really pop on the screen.

Hmmmm.....cant get this table to load now....get ROM error telling me to check the path....ROM “snspares” Tests ok and runs in Pinmame. Running PinMame ver 3.3 Table did work ok after installing this BG....now a month later it doesn’t.  I don't recall updating anything since.Anyone else having this problem?

I did update to freezy 1.8.1 snapshot and haven't tried this table since....perhaps thats the problem?

For this table you can not use Freeze,  Hit F1 turn off external - turn on show DMD

Love this feature!
Still cannot get the scoring display to show on the BG after loading the table unless I uncheck the already checked “ show dmd” box...then go back and hit F1 again and recheck the “ show dmd” box again. Then the scoring display show up....I have to do this every time that I load the table up . ( “Use external dmd” is always left unchecked as instructed. Any ideas? Certainly not a major problem without this workaround but would like not have to do this every time if possible....

Thank you!

You might try deleting the pinmame registry entry, just for this table's ROM
Then run the table, hit F1 set it to cabinet mode.
quit and relaunch table, and to move and size the pinmame DMD as desired
See if it sticks then.

If you feel the need to empty your wallet in my direction, i don't have any way to receive it anyways

Sorry for this beginners question....

when you say “try deleting the pinmame registry entry” are you saying delete the nvram?
I’m kinda a beginner at all the terminology.

I found setting Ddraw=0 for this rom fixed that problem. Thank you

This is a very nice looking backglass. Do you by chance have a less sexy version (for those that would like to play this table with family)?

I saw the other b2s available, but the image quality is quite a bit lower. Thanks.
