Hi Guys,

i´am new in the VPX topic (still play a few years FX2/FX3 with my VPIN Cab)... and i like it very much. I also spend the last months with lots of topics... and one is SSF (Sourround Sound Feedback) in combination with FX3, PUPpacks, DOFLinx etc.

I have a recording studio and spend also some time in good sounds for this topic.. and it blows me away (how it feels to play a good SSF FX3 table).

I tried also a lot in VPX the last weeks and found out:

A lot of people -> optimize a lot of tables (sounds, sound-settings etc) sepparate -> and start again when a table updates.

So: a lot cool stuff is done redundant and again and again.... just to have a good sounding solution.

I don´t know if i´am alone with this idea... but:

I think as a community we can:

1. safe a lot of work (when we share this)

2. can be much more effective (when its not overitten by a table update)

3. in the end: have a cool result for our beloved hobby

Just ideas to discuss:

If there would be a way to have a kind of "side loading" for the used sounds... this would help soooo much.

For each table (e.g. a folder etc.) and a "fallback" (if no folder exists with the "main sounds") would be cool (in the folder of course the exchange sounds)

The option "backglass or table" would also be better to adjust like this: e.g. Flipper_up: 100% table (SSF basspump and exciters), 20% backglass... » so your ears can feel, hear from the case and get the "higher frequency" a little bit from backglass » i think a perfect "feeling" to play.

also it would be great to "multi"select / adjust:

Table %

Backglass %

Rear/Front %

L/R %

Level %

Kind of like it is in 'sound manager' but more flexible.

This would stay during an update... and we could share (if the configuration of Table, Backglas, Rear/Front, L/R, Level etc. within the folder) our results without "change (you can also say damage) the VPX table".

So... just some thoughts... let me know what you think about this.

Greetz & stay healthy in this crazy times

A good first step in VPX could be to provide a feature equivalent to POV or table script "Side loading".

in 10.6 you can export the POV and the table script. If these *.pov and *.vbs exist in the tables folder and named identical to the .vpx table file, they will be used instead of the ones included in the vpx file itself.

So the simple feature could be to add a feature to export the sounds to a directory named TABLE_NAME.sounds. Afterwards, when a table gets loaded and tries to open a sound file, a file of the the name existing in the corresponding *.sounds folder gets precedence over the file included in the *.vpx file.

This idea makes me think: Why stop at sound? Why not have everything, including art, sound, primitives, code, and layout in a source directory per table, which can be built into a .vpx file?

With such a setup, one could make a change in sound or art without needing to release a whole new file. Collaboration on a table, and keeping track of changes between versions, would be much simpler.

I'm no DOF expert whatsoever, but isn't it possible to at least have all the DOF triggers be overwritten by sounds externally?

@toxie SSF isn't necessarily DOF. You can use SSF as DOF effects replacement, for example solenoids, but we should think about SSF in total. That means ball rolling sounds, ball drops, spinners, ...

@Wizball I think sounds are the most important assets for the "users" since SSF become more and more popular. But basically you're right. If you use my DOF Configtool Client you can already extract the scripts and POVs and put them under git-based version control within your tables folder. That could easily be extended for the sound files if requested. I don't know how big the need for graphics would be. But on the other hand I consider a generic export of all the assets in a table folder to be a good idea / possibility.
