Retroflair (original table on normal Future Pinball) vs my updated Retroflair (BAM Edition) mod.

This is a video of my first attempt at taking an older Future Pinball table (made by the talented rom), and updating it to modern BAM features.

You can see the drastic difference in not only how much better it plays (and I don't really know much about physics)...but also how stunning it can look with the following changes:

  • BAM dynamic physics
  • new controlled g.i. lighting using hardware nano flashers
  • BAM RGB flashers (that look so cool!)
  • BAM shadow maps
  • BAM ball texture
  • BAM ball and flipper shadows
  • BAM global lighting and post processing
  • BAM controlled brightness of light inserts

This looks and plays (within my limited skill set for physics) so much better....and looks so cool in BAM Open VR!

I already have DOFLinx support on the table, but I may update it to use the new iCOM BAM plug-in (thanks Nailbuster and Ravarcade!), that allows FP to use DOF directly without needing DOFLinx.

I love this table. It is one of the few future pinball tables that I keep in my cab. Thanks so much for your updates. A pup pack would really be cool for this table.

RetroFlair - BAM Edition: All new PAC-MAN, Speedball and OutRun modes! (and other BAM updates)

This video shows the new PAC-MAN, Speedball and OutRun modes I created and added to Rom's excellent RetroFlair for Future Pinball.

You've never seen a pinball table quite like this.

Pac-Man balls, Power Pills, flying Ghosts, Cars moving on Highways and more!

Left Ramp has Space Invaders, Pac-Man, and Speedball modes.

Right ramp has Space Invaders, Pac-Man, and OutRun modes.

Pac-Man mode:

-eat all the pellets with the Pac-Man ball
-avoid the ghosts (you lose a ball it you hit them)
-eat the Power Pill
-hit the bumpers to eat the ghosts

SpeedBall mode:

-hit all the players to take them out
-avoid the random players to get to the SpeedBall

OutRun mode:

-avoid the cars (they will honk at you, or screech their tires)
-hit the right ramp (now with a Checkpoint Sign) to advance and play the next OutRun tune.
-hit the right ramp when the sign changes to GOAL to complete the mode

---------------------

Each mode uses many of BAM's various features:

-mini playfields for Ghosts, PowerPill Flasher, Cars, Signs
-texture swaps for Ghosts, Cars, Game Marquee Sign, Outrun Checkpoint Sign
-detaching flasher lights from their hidden positions and placing them elsewhere in the PF (GI, rainbow launch, etc)
-shadowmaps
-light inserts brightness
-RGB flashers on the slingshots
-COM Extensions for PinEvent: DOF and PUP SSF
-dynamic physics
-ball rolling sounds
-custom balls for pac-man and default ball

Other additions:

-the left Sign is now larger and changes its marquee to match each song played
-extra voice overs for ball drain
-added GI lighting that turns on and off at key points
-fixed up the DMD text to be cleaner.
-changed bumpers to coloured ghost matching the ghost toys
-changed ghost toys to only move when their matching ghost bumper is hit
-fixed up some playfield geometry

It was a lot more work than I expected... but it worked out pretty damn good I think!

Next, I will update PinEvent to see if I can have it auto-detect what you are using (Desktop, VR, Cabinet) and apply the appropriate PinEvent Profile.

I may also add PUPDMD to the table as well!

RetroFlair - BAM Edition. (PUPDMD WIP)

Here's some pics of my WIP of RetroFlair - BAM's PUPDMD update.... and also my progress of integrating PUPDMD to PinEvent.

Real DMD's may look sweet with their glow... but man I can't go back to 128x32 dots when I can have a DMD with True Type Fonts that can be rendered in any resolution (up to 4K if you want) and HD video backgrounds, splash videos...anything PUP can do.

Compare the PUPDMD on the top left to the Future Pinball DMD on the right.

What sort of changes do you have to make when you convert the DMDs to the PUPDMD?

I'm not "converting" anything. I'm adding the PUPDMD support to the PinEvent vbs files... then I'm using PUPDMD commands in the table script combined with pupevent commands and videos (which use the same pup-pack as the PUP SSF functions).

So just like a typical backglass pup-pack.... a new PUPDMD window is opened.... pup uses VLC to play the videos... then pup handles the score displays and text. I can add any text I want...and I use the FP variables for score / player / credits within the pup dmd commands in realtime.

So remember that this is not "integrated into FP's window"... its another window playing overtop of FP (required to run in Borderless Windowed). The PUP window can be any size / resolution you want.

It's not "complex" if you understand table script and how pup and pup-packs work.

Same here buddy... beyond a little bit of vbs, java and scripting....not much more to my programming experience... maybe Q-Basic. :)

Here's pics of my current WIP of the PUP FullDMD feature for RetroFlair - BAM (for Future Pinball).

This is what you can get if you have a full 16:9 middle screen on your backbox similar to a modern Stern cabinet... or you could possibly just use it on your Backglass screen like a normal PuP-Pack since it also has full animated background videos and events.

4096 dots aren't as impressive as they used to be. ;)
