I just got Visual Pinball X's latest version to work, however the whole game is quite laggy, to the point where the audio sounds like it's distorted and ripping itself from time to time. The FPS feels like it's stuck at around 15 FPS.

I've tried changing some settings, mainly lowering texture detail and dimension limit, but I notice no difference, the image is still choppy and the audio still distorts from time to time. Can anyone help me?

What graphics card?  Most recommend a minimum of a GTX 750ti or even higher

my GTX 750 / no-Ti … is mostly ok for all, just disable "Playfield Reflections" at some Tables … give it a try.

VPX lag can be any number of things.  Here are my suggestions:

1. Your harddrive is too slow or fragmented.  You can solve this by upgrading to a SSD.

2. Your processor is too slow.  You can solve this by upgrading your processor. I recommend an i5 or better.

3. Your video card is too slow.  Most people recommend an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti (or better).  This is usually where the trouble is.

4. Your settings are too complicated for the graphics card you have. Try turning off ball shadow, flipper shadow, reflections, anti-aliasing, etc.

5. Your monitor is 4K and your system just can't drive that many pixels. Upgrade your processor and video card or drop down to 1080p.

6. You can't afford to upgrade any of your hardware. You can solve your lag by downloading and playing only VP9 tables. Some of them are quite nice.

I had horrible flipper lag in VPX when using an Intel i3 with Intel 520 graphics.  I upgraded to an i7 with Intel Iris 650 graphics and all my lag went away.

How I built my B2S Pinball Cabinet, step-by-step, with pictures!  Full-sized cabinet for ~$700. Believe me, if I can do it, so can you!

LOL I am running a Core2 Quad CPU in a 14 year old Dell precision, with zero lag, and AA maxed out.

As mentioned, an inadequate video card is the usual cause for lag IMO. Get a 1050 or >.

My PC is also old and underpowered. Turning-on V-sync fixed most of my lag probs and I was even able to crank-up the prettiness a little.

V-Sync is the first thing to turn off to reduce lag ( https://www.vpforums...showtopic=41957 ), but be aware that you may experience tearing.

Or try the https://www.vpforums...showtopic=41180 VPX 10.6 beta, it has buttons in the video preferences to choose default settings for low-end, mid-range and high-end machines. If you select low-end and the lag problem remains, then something else is fishy with your setup.

I have had also Flipper lags in VPX. But could not solve this problem with the Vsych off option or preredered frames=1.

So, I tried a another way, which was not found in any lag solving description of Flipper lags in VPX in Internet Forums.

The problem is, that I can only feel the different. I can not describe it in measured milliseconds. Sorry for that.

My problem solving was, that I switched the slider to full speed into the Windows intern Keyboard Cursor Blink Rate adjusting Window.

Found in System Options, Keyboard, Velocity.

And when I tried the slowest Cursor Blink Rate, I could feel the Flipper lag again. And gone another time away with the fastest Curor Blink rate.

I don´t know, why this makes a different? But for me, this works fine.

I have always had this issue when I launch the table from Pinball X.  If I just run VPX directly the flipper and ball lag issues go away.  I setup my cab in September of 2017 running a i7-4790K, 32GB RAM, GTX 980, 1TB Samsung EVO 850 SSD.  The cab has 2 1080P screens and a pindmdv3.  Is the only real solution here to go to Pinup Popper for the front end?

Your specs are near identical to my pre-CPU upgrade, very good PC, so you should not have issues with pinballx. Something else is amiss here but really no idea!  Are you running VPX in exclusive fullscreen?

Agree with The Loafer, your specs shouldn't have an issue. More info is needed, VPX settings, PinballX settings (and version) and all that kind of stuff..

Edit - maybe give pinfinity a go (or try disabling if your're already using it) http://mjrnet.org/pi...inAffinity.html

Running too many timers on too fast values can also lead to lag, and of course the db2s. The more programs you run, anti-virus, frontend, pup etc. All will add up. You can always get a faster computer, or adjust the table for known "non essential" stuff like ball reflection if you are having issues. Personally, I don't have any anti-virus installed, I use PBY as frontend now, I use mostly stick to Wildmans db2s', Very few pup, and I do look over for timers and forgotten collidable primitives if I see tables with stutter.

From now on. I won't help anyone here at VPF. Please ask Noah why that is.

ive recently stopped using the baller installer when i play games and running it directly through VPX and all of the lag seems to go away.

Other than that ive had no changes switching

Frame Pacing

Low qual / vs high qual

capping at 59/60 fps

vsync off

Ultra latency (nvidia)

Seriously ive never seen a single change moving any of those settings on a 3050 and then on a 1660ti (an older card but runs more or less the same  . . .but if im honest absolutely no difference)

So, i just press the play icon in VPX and everything seems great,  a little fiddly but, its a small price to pay.
