I'm thinking of building my own virtual cabinet. I just don't have a lot of money. Are there any under $1000, even $500? It doesn't have to be fancy, just a box I can stick a couple monitors in.

I bought wood for my first midi cab for 50 euro, that's the cheapest part of building a cab

I bought one of these on Craigslist for $100, gutted it and placed monitors and controller inside. Not fancy, but a lot of fun.

Awe man that looks amazing, but if I do one from scratch myself it would just be a crappy box with a space for the playingfield monitor, and a tiny 7 inch monitor for the dmd.I doubt I'll even bother with backglass unless it's a kit. In fact I'll just be using my HP 21" I have right now, so that way I can take it out of the box when I'm done playing pinball and keep using it for my computer.

That's probably in line with what I can afford, I just wish the flipper buttons were on the sides like a real machine. Having them in the front looks wrong to me.

Edit: I took a closer look, and can see that it actually does have holes for buttons on the sides.

I would hate to take something like that apart though. I'd rather have a real pinball machine but they are just so damn expensive. It's a miracle you got one for that cheap.

Call around to your local vending machine company.  They may have a canabalized machine or two lying around that they can let you have for a good price.  I scored mine off of Craigslist, but $200 for a cabinet, back cabinet, glass, trim, coin door, lockdown bar and legs will get you started off way ahead financially.   It's the cheapest way to go.  Even if you make one from scratch, all those trim parts will add up.  An old cabinet will even have you flipper buttons mounted on the side, just where you wan 'em.
