Just started my Pin project. Completed a stand-up MAME last year and now decided to tackle a Pin after getting a used Gottlieb Premier cabinet for a whole $25.

Looks like most questions have been answered about building a VP, but i'll post one that's directly related to this particular cabinet.

I have 17 lights across the back that actually used to light up a panel with individual letters on them. I would like to populate them with just single color LED's and hook up to a controller. Question is can all 17 lights be controlled seperatly? I would like them to do things like flash, sequence form side to side, or middle outward, or out inward ect. Can either the LED-Wiz or PACLED64 handle this complex of sequencing natively through DOF? or some other software that hooks into VP or FP?

Also, any suggestions for the two monitors in that Backlight? Its got a unique design for sure.

Thanks for looking, hope to keep this updated as the build progreses.

 Randy

Nice cabinet as well, what did you do to fill the space by the Lockdown bar? How far back did you move the playfield monitor.

I was going to leave the monitor cased, but may at least take the back off for more mounting options, I really like what you did. I was going to try a TV mount but might go towards your route.

So cleaned up the cab, and painted the inside.

photofeb08,2330311_t.jpg

Test fit the back glass monitor. boy is it tight. might not even need to mount it, just press fit.. :aikido:

Backcab is 25.25 inches and TV is 25.5. Took off the back which allowed the bezel to flex a bit and presto, self mounting backglass.

photofeb10,1652281_t.jpg

back glass is a Samsung UN28H4000 28-Inch 720p from a local Pawn Shop $45

Playfield is a Roku 39" open box from best buy $120

roku_t.jpg

Standard Gottlieb cab is 20 3/8" wide. TV was listed at 20.5". The IR receiver at the bottom is not part of the bezel, two screws and off it comes. Yay!

$25 WOW....nice score, I just did a Gottlieb standard cabinet that I am still making changes to, I left my playfield tv cased and routed the cabinet.. Congrats on the score and have fun!

Decided on Playfield mounting options. Went with a f4ramwork like @Nemo did on his f-14 cabinet. Had to decase the rear of the TV, boy was there a lot of wasted space in that thing.

photofeb11,2134140_t.jpg

After building the frame, which I fastened down using the VESA mounting, I made up a hinge system using a 1" PVC pipe and pipe anchors and a closet bar mount.

Here's  view from inside.

now on to mounting the computer

photofeb11,213440_t.jpg

Hope the old beast is good enough. Went through my computer boneyard and found my old AMD Phenom II 980 Black and a pile of old video cards. here what Ive came up with:

AMD 980 Black OC'ed to 4.3ghz

ASUS Crossfire Formula V Motherboard

12GB RAM (if I remember right part of the reason it got retired was one RAM stick went bad, originally had 16GB )

Thermaltake TOUGHPOWER 750W Modular Power Supply

MSI GTX 770 Video Card

Sapphire GTX460 Video Card

Think that will run VPX? thoughts?

I would consider dropping the gtx460. More than one has experienced lag issues when using two different GPU'.

The 770 should be able to run both displays just fine.

From now on. I won't help anyone here at VPF. Please ask Noah why that is.

I need to run three displays, the Playfield, the backglass and the DMD setup like this:

whcz6od_t.jpg

Think the 770 will run that OK?

I guess I can always start with the 770 and if needed try the 460, and if that doesn't work, wait for this Bitcoin mining craze to end and get a 1060 or 1070..

Yes. I would try that first. It should be ok. I have a 750 ti. I don't have the lcd but a "dedicated read dmd" if there is such a thing. And have no problems. The extra screen should not be a problem at all for you GPU. I have some tables where I need to use the "backglass" to run a dmd too and there is no problems for me doing it.

So, I've looked around and as far as Gottlieb cabs go, this one is pretty boring and generic and seems to be only on the Genesis game.

I know its mine and I could do anything i want to it, but from a purist and aesthetics viewpoint, think there's any harm in painting it and doing different artwork?

Doesn't seem to be a very popular or particularly collectable cab, as well as its guts are all gone or in unrepairable shape.

Just a thought. Would hate to start painting it and find out it is something that should be kept original.

I've engaged a place online that I've had vinyl stickers made from before. He also does stencils, so this is what I'm looking at doing. I'm a big Star Wars fan, and the cool backcab that the Gottlieb has is just begging for cool artwork.

Here's a quick test of the displays.

photofeb14,0218211.jpg

And I had a local plastic shop cut the Dual DMD bezel from PVC sheet. If it works good and I have no further mods, I'll go back and have it done in Plexi

just looked up the GTX770 on Userbenchmark,, WOW  didn't realize it was still such a relevant card. Its faster than a GTX 1050Ti. Guess it should run VPX just fine.

What LED strips did you get for your matrix?  I picked up a couple of strips for the sides of my cabinet above the playfield, but they didn't have enough in stock at the time for me to get enough for my matrix.  Just checking with others on what they went with to make sure that I am on track with my source that I used, etc.

Also, what power did you buy to run all of the LEDs?

Thank.

here's the LED's.  $14 a meter. https://www.ebay.com...872.m2749.l2649

I plan to use the 5V rail on a second 550W ATX, should be more than enough.

Yeah, 5 meters at 43.2 watts per meter is 216watts at 100% power.   I would just triple check that the 5V rail actually has about 250watts of juice.  A lot of power supplies are showing just about 150watts on the 5v rail.  The 12V rail generates more of the power.

Of course, with addressable LEDs we are talking  about what, less than 40% of the LEDs will be active at any given time, however when I asked about LED power elsewhere a while back, I received a resounding "always allow for max power draw, even if never planning on using max power."

I don't have an extra ATX power supply anyway, so I might just grab a $35 250watt 5V only power supply and call it a day.

Let me know if it works out to use the ATX power as I can save a few bucks if I go with something smaller like 150watts instead of 250watts...

yeah, it only has 120W at the 5v or 20A   But I also am betting on the 40-50% duty cycle, so I think it should be fine, if i get funky stuff happening I can always replace it, but figured since I had one laying around and it Gold 80 certified. Figured it will be cheaper to run that than a cheap Chinese EBay PS. I guess time will tell.

I was thinking about a 12v to 5v Stepdown, but the largest of those are only 10A or so, and at around 80-90% efficiency, it's not really viable, and the converter costs as much as the 5V PS.

ordered 4 exciters and two small 15W amps as well as a 2.1 amp, two 4" speakers and a 6.5" subwoofer. Should be a sound sensation. Can't wait to get back from work and get started again. I have two weeks off, should be able to make decent headway before off to work again.

Been slacking on updates.

So three weeks ago finished most of the install, including the various sound systems, power supplies etc.

Still need to find room for the 5V 60amp for the addressable LEDS.

My stencils arrived a couple days ago. I have to put the mechanicals on hold as stencils have a shelf life.

My paint on the cabinet with the "splatter" I did silver and navy and a few spots of white. Came out pretty good I believe.

photomar05,145911_t.jpgphotomar06,182517_t.jpg

Measuring for placement

photomar07,132153_t.jpgphotomar07,132158_t.jpg

Storm trooper going on. I did this stencils as a reverse image so that the black actually used the cabinet background so that splatter would show through.

Makes it look like it was part of the plan instead of a painted on afterthought. In fact all the black is this way.

photoapr03,160348_t.jpgphotoapr03,182613_t.jpgphotoapr03,172823_t.jpg

Now the Death Star. It was so big I had to cut it in half to apply the stencil.

photoapr03,183725(1)_t.jpgphotoapr03,183728(1)_t.jpg

Painting and masking. I also wanted to paint details around the Superlaser. But didn't specify that before I has stencils cut so had to get a tad creative.

Looking good.  Nice theme. You are doing a much cleaner stencil than I did on mine, I went old school with overspray style.. a bit too much over spray on some parts but oh well.

Here's a shot of mine in process a couple years ago, for some reason I have no finished shots of the artwork.
