So I'm still new to this, but noticed that the table options include a Day/night light scale, which apparently can be set to use real-world lat/long to dynamically change lighting.

While that's pretty awesome, my first thought was "why not use an ambient light sensor to change that slider"?

They are quite cheap, around $5USD:

My vision of this would be something along the lines of the light sensor being added to the "Automatic Day Night Cycle" in preferences, perhaps with a min/max setting.

Also, technical question because I haven't played with the dynamic day/night cycle, does it update live? Or does the table have to restart to show the change in light level? Just picturing how awesome it would be if you could dim the lights in a room and have the table respond accordingly.

unfortunately It only changes on table re-start, not in real-time.

This sounds really cool in theory. However, you'll notice most table authors check the box to override the default Night/Day slider because they only design the table visuals to account for one lighting setting. I don't know much more about why myself, but I wanted to caution that even if that feature was available now, some table lighting may not look so pretty under different Night/Day settings.

I also like the idea of changing light by night and day or even better a sensor as proposed here. On the other hand min and max are extreme in effect. So it would be nice, if authors could define a specific range (min/max).

Well I will just throw my general lighting guidelines out for discussion. I first set my environmental emission scale to 1-3 or so, and then adjust all of the other lighting to work within that EES range. I have seen other use EES setting all the way up to 20 and I think thats where the problem is if some kind of sensor is added. If the authors could agree on a standardized EES, it would be better for a sensor. Im sure HauntFreaks can add more to this discussion since he has pioneered a lot of the VP10 lighting.
