File Name: Fathom (Bally 1981) Vintage Mod

File Submitter: vogliadicane

File Submitted: 31 Mar 2017

File Category: VPX/VPinMAME Recreations

Author(s): Vogliadicane

Manufacturer: Bally
Year: 1981
ROM: Link to ROM
Permission to MOD?: Unspecified

my first table.
this is a heavy mod based on 32assassin's great Fathom, which is based on Unclewilly's version, so all credits and thanks go to these two.

What I did:
- completely remade playfield in 4k resolution (by stitching images from the web and partially redrawing, even bought a font for that job!)
- completely remade plastics in 4k resolution (same way)
- made new bumper caps from scratch
- reworked or changed many objects, images and materials
- completely remade all lights and illumination
- apron reworked
- "live" mirror metal wall at the top (only the ball is not reflected, don't know, how to do that)
- and many other things, I don't remember anymore

Physics (only minor changes):
- made the table slightly slower
- ! repositioned the rubber posts at the wicked vertical outlane, so that there's at least a little chance so save the ball from draining by nudging ! Btw, this is also the case for the real table as seen in videos on the web, so no cheating.

The aim of this version was to get it as close to the original vintage table (yellow tint, vintage light bulbs a.s.o)
As I already mentiond in the WIP thread, I will also make a second version, which will look like a polished Fathom with LED lights, plastics and playfield repros a.s.o.
The desktop view needs a liitle more work, but is already quite ok now. Maybe I'll release an update in the future.
Big thanks go to roar, who provided me with images of plastics and to all the cool people, who made and contributed to VP and the great always helping community!

Dang ! Almighty ...... this is one good looking table, just LOVE that "bulby glowy" feel to it, thanks so much !

Just altered the table's friction to .14 (that's double the original value) to slow it down even more, i know, i'm getting old.

And that for a first table........Dang !

Played some 20 games on it in glorious 4K and it's one superb experience, again thanks to all involved  :otvclap:

Ohh and Fathom is a GREAT table, fun to play, interesting multiball, and i always like droptarget lanes so i'm good to go !

Gone fishin', no really.......

Great job vogliadicane, absolutely gorgeous mod! Love the vintage glow, you've achieved a very organic, nostalgic effect. Labor of love and it really shows, many thanks for all the time you put into it!

Awesome light color for the bulbs!

Imagine these lights on a Centaur playfield...

I like this table but would like to brighten up the playfield. I don’t know if it’s the vintage lighting look, but the playfield has a darker or subdued look compared to the one used by 32assassin.

I have no idea which is correct. My personal preference is for a brighter look & I tried playing with the various Editor lighting settings to enhance the blue a bit but got nowhere. Is there any lighting setting to adjust for this? Or is this something that needs the playfield image modified using Photoshop?

Maybe starting the table with "F6" and adjust ambient lightning variable ... will help ?

Well, that's what this table build is all about. You could adjust the day night slider to the right, which also increases the brightness of the playfield, but not the color, which was intended by me. Or you wait for my LED refurbished repro version, which will have that typical blueish playfield and plasics due to reproduction...

You can adjust brightness if you want.  Press F6, press Left Ctrl to go to Environment Emission.  Press right flipper button to increase value to 20

First let me say this is a great table & I really like, no matter the coloring. Thank you for making it happen.

The slider makes it brighter but does not affect the color. I'll keep playing & will be waiting for the LED version, Thanks.

Which backglass would you suggest using, I have tried 3 different ones and none of them display credits in the credit box.

Credits display is not on by default, start table then press F6 and hit the check box for credits display, then press OK and then F3 to reload vpinmame and you should get credits.
