File Name: Road Kings (Williams 1986)

File Submitter: sliderpoint

File Submitted: 29 Apr 2016

File Category: VPX/VPinMAME Recreations

Author(s): Sliderpoint
Manufacturer: Williams
Year: 1986
ROM: Link to ROM
Permission to MOD?: Yes, with approval

This is a conversion of my VP9/PM5 Road Kings Table.

New VPX lighting, materials, rubber objects, etc (great environment lighting image from Dozer316)

Completely updated physics!!  It's fun!

Continued thanks to:
Jim5Six for all the resources.
Dark for making the primitive ramps.
TAB for the original Playfield image.

IMPORTANT NOTE:
I run windows on my cab in PORTRAIT MODE.  You may need to go the backdrop settings and change the F.S. settings to work in your cab.  I'm sure someone will provide some good 270 rotation settings in the comments.

Very fun!  I had to use the new version (1.1) as I was having problems with the first release.

Yes, v1.1 will work best for most folks.

This table has a nice, slick look and it's very refreshing to finally get the lights and sounds missing from the VP9 version. That one also had some bugs that were never fixed, and everything appears to work as it should here. You're placement choice and appearance of the alphanumeric LED's is also ace.

I have to confess up front that any version of Road Kings causes me so much frustration that it literally triggers my acid reflux. :bad: I only play it for nostalgic reasons. Otherwise, it just makes me ill.

With that out of the way, playing this on desktop, I am very grateful you decided to amp up the playfield elasticity, compared to other VP10 tables, because that makes the right outlane drains somewhat less frequent( the right outlane being my main sticking point with this particular table).

I did reduce elasticity a little and completely changed the flipper properties, with the full set of changes to improve flow and accuracy, as follows:

  • Global- Pf Friction: 0.64, Pf Elasticity: 0.5
  • Flippers- Mass: 1.5, Strength: 2950, Elasticity: 0.6, Elasticity Falloff: 0.35, Friction: 0.33, Return Str: 0.055, Coil RU: 1.3

Might want to reduce the ramp kicker/plunger's release speed about 30% while you're at it.

My PC is too slow to play multi-ball though, so if anyone tries these, please let me know how it went.

I really like that the player can see the little black diverter mechanism which determines which course the ball takes on the two way ramp. Nice detail!

Hey Roger, you are correct. The right outlanes are typically brutal on this table. I adjusted these a lot to help this after seeing the same types of changes on the real one. I spent quite a bit of time on the real machine when tuning this one.

Yes, It is still a high stress game, but definitely more fun with the outlane adjustments. Still "You got time lock!" is quite a fist pump moment!

Slight update: If I force enable Full Screen and disable ddraw for the rom, both in the registry, I don't get slowdown during multiball. My settings mentioned above seem fine for getting time locks, including a reduction in release speed for the ramp kicker/plunger.
