File Name: Excalibur (Gottlieb 1988) FS VP9.9

File Submitter: mfuegemann

File Submitted: 09 Jan 2015

File Category: VP 9.x Cabinet Tables (FULL SCREEN)

Author(s): mfuegemann
Manufacturer: Gottlieb
Year: 1988
ROM: Link to ROM
Permission to MOD?: Yes, without approval

This is Excalibur by Gottlieb, Full Screen edition.

Resources have been very hard to find, so I want to thank most of all the pinball owners from pinside.com. All were willing to help and Maralb, Whysnow and Gaspumprob sent me images of their machines, so that I was able to redraw the playfield and the plastics. Akiles provided good images too, that showed the table layout in good detail.
Again I had no manual, so the VP8 table made by Destruk and Jive gave me the correct switch and light numbers and showed the way, the solenoids are working.
Additional Thanks go to Fuzzel for providing the lightmap images for the inserts, Kodiac for the flipper primitive routine, JPSalas for the fading flasher code, dboyrecords for playtesting and to Inkochnito for the DIP switch settings code.

Please be aware that You need to adjust the Novelty setting within the DIP switch menu to "normal" if You want to collect the Extra Ball (F6 opens the Dip switch menu).
I was really disappointed, as I managed to sink all the Drop Targets during Multiball and made the center ramp to find out, that I did not.
Please change the DIP switch settings only between games or restart the table completely, as this table uses light triggered solenoids again, that rely on the state of a particular lamp to work.

And yes, there are no slingshots on this table. One additional funny feature is that there are 3 balls installed, to meet the trough switch setup, even if there is only a 2-ball Multiball.

FS Version 1.1 has now the DOF calls implemented by Arngrim - thank You for this, Arngrim. The table comes with the new configuration file code by gtxjoe that creates/reads cController.txt from the User directory. Just change the variable cController to 0 and the table is looking for the configuration file.

I have included a table image but there are two Media packs availiable on vpforums.org.
Have fun and please use the support topic to post any findings and suggestions.

Michael

that's weird.  Usually I'd suspect a need to delete the nvram but jeez, that's the first time you load it so it should be clean.

Hi guys,

I will look into this.

Edit: At my machine, the music stops shortly after the ball has been launched, the normal sounds (horse, hit effects) continue and occasionally the music starts again. Is that the behavior, You experience, too? If so, I assume there maybe an ROM issue, as there are no playsound errors from my side. I will try out the DIP switch settings, though.

Please confirm or correct the error description.

Regards

Michael

Very nice table thanks once again mfuegemann!

I didn't notice the music problems but I will pay attention when I play and report back if I notice anything.

Hi,

it seems, that the ROM can handle only one sound channel at a given time, so when I trigger a ROM sound (as the sword sound whit the flippers), the music stops for a brief time and continues after the sound has been played.

The problem with the horse sounds on entering the ramp (whinny and gallop) is, that they have a long duration. This way it seems as if the music has been stopped completely.

The DIP switch settings seem not to affect this behaviour.

Regards

Michael

Same behavior here Michael.   What's weird is that it seems to fade the music channel out as the effect sample is triggered and then fades back in afterward rather than it being immediately muted.  I tried it without the VP sound effect call in the script for just the left flipper as a test and it made no difference.  The sword sample played and the music faded out.

Maybe an emulation limitation of the sound engine?

Dozer.

Anyone know how to get into the actual game play adjustment modes so I can get the game off of french. I can get into the test mode but from there how do I get into the adjustments menu?

very nice work BTW!

Hi Kuuth,

there is only one ROM file availiable. This is English, but I have seen only two words displayed.
