A newbie here looking for some guidance.  I am planning to build a table but want to make sure I can get the software working first.  That's where I need help.

I have downloaded all the files and followed the tutorials here.  I have been able to get VP8 tables running fine but I can not get the VP9 tables working no matter what I do.

I started trying to run these on my laptop which is an older windows 7 machine.  The VP8 tables would load and run fine but I couldn't get the VP9 tables working.  VP9 launches, will load the table but when I try to run them they hang in the initializing visuals steps and never render - just stops working there and I have to launch task manager to shut down visual pinball.

So I assumed it was my laptop not being powerful enough.  I then installed VP8 & VP9 on my newer Windows 8.1 desktop.  Similar result, the VP8 tables runs fine but the VP9 do not.  I am able to get further though with the desktop.  I get all the way to the Starting Game Scripts step and I get a windows error message stating the program has stopped working and I can't get past that.  Any help is much appreciated.  Many hours trying to fix this but can't get past it.

** UPDATE - I was just able to get VP version 921 working without this error.  Version 991 still has this issue.  I suspect I have a DLL versioning or some other support file problem.  Any ideas on which one that might be or is there a way to verify what versions go with what?

My PC is a desktop with an Intel i5-3350P CPU @ 3.10GHz, 8.00GM RAM, running Windows 8.1 64 Bit x64 based processor with an NVIDIA GeForce GT 620 video card.  I am only running one monitor at the moment.  I plan to move to two then three once I get VP9 working.  I am running the EXE's as administrator and running them in Windows XP Service Pack 3 emulation mode.

The files I installed are:

VPInstaller_1_0_3.zip

bally_6803_gts3_nvram.zip

s3250u3.zip

vpfonts.zip

vpinmame_cabinet_2.5.zip

vpvbs3_43.zip

VPinball991_Full.zip

Visual Pinball for Yummies - Tutorial I used to supplement the one on the website

Thanks in advance for any help.

For vp9.9 set your video options to windowed full screen not full screen and make sure your video ram slider isn't too high for your video card. A gt620 is extremely low end and not at all a gaming card. Good chance it can't handle things.

Thanks for the suggestion.  I tried both - I even setting the slider all the way in both directions to see if it made a difference and unfortunately it didn't.  Still the same problem.  I really think I have a file out of sync or missing because I am actually able to run full screen rotated tables with version 9.21 and they perform great.  Any other ideas?  Thanks.

Hello, Regis (sorry---couldn't resist)

BigBoss is correct about the vidcard, and one reason is that the GT620 is actually just a re-branded GT520 or GT530 (maybe they needed to unload some unsold bottom-level GPUs, so they just printed up some new boxes)and the 520/530 is a barely-modified low-400-series card with the same GF108 processor). Without info on your laptop, we can't know what its capabilities are, but if your desktop's card is an 'OEM',as opposed to 'retail', it could have one gigabyte of RAM---or only 512MB. 512 was sufficient for VP8 tables (unless they had lots of flashing or fading lights), but VP9 tables were put together with new features such as Alpha transparencies and lighting that just needed more memory (for rendering) and bandwidth (for keeping up with animations).

VP921 is the last version to use DX7; as far as VP991 is concerned, it needs DirectX 9 (DX9) installed on your computer. Windows 7 and 8 probably didn't come with DX any earlier than DX10 (even my XP, which came with DX9c, was missing d3dx9_35.dll and d3dx9_43.dll, so they had to be obtained. Do a computer search, or go to C:\WINDOWS\system32 and look for a string of files numbered from 24 to 43 or so.....if those files are missing, they can be replaced/updated/downloaded from the Microsoft Download Center.

Hope this is helpful; good luck! GSG

This should never have to be done. If this was a "fix" then you needed to reinstall directx
