Hi,

I've been away from VPF awhile. Whatever happened to AJ's Forums? There were so many cool recreations on that site ... then one day, he was no more!

In-between work, I've been happily playing my VP favs, Firepower, Hi Speed, etc. Suddenly an error says that VPinMAME was a beta software and that it has expired!

I've installed VP 8.1 and VPinMAME 2.1 successfully.

I dloaded PacDude's Firepower and was really looking forward to playing it; havn't seen this version of that table yet.

The table will load into VP ok. But when trying to play it, the following error occurs:

"VBScipt: Unable to load VPinMAME. ActiveX component can't create object."

Clicking OK on that dialog results in several other errors:

"Script Error: Line:888 Object required: 'Controller'" - (yeah; VPinMAME didn't load)
"Script Error: Line:308 Object required: 'Controller'"

Any suggestions?

I'd really like to have Visual Pinball back online. I need my "Hi Speed" Fix! wink.gif And time runs out SO fast! Ain't got time to repair Visual Pinball!

Alternately, if you're a Vista or Win7 user, run it as administrator in the properties menu or disable UAC altogether.

Yes, the Scripts ARE extracted, and not still zipped, in the Tables folder.

BTW, I'm using WinXP Home Ed SP3.

I'm close to doing a full uninstall and reinstall. I thought I'd uninstalled VP and VPM completely before installing the latest version. I don't see the software, but all the old directories are still there.

Stay tuned ---

Do you have a folder named "User" in the same directory as the VP excecutable? PD's releases rely upon this.

I also had this problem recently when I was making the install tutorial A message would pop up saying that pinmame was out of date. I went to the Pinmame site and installed that instead and all then worked well. Quite possibly the version hosted on this site could have been corrupted during the recent server change, in the same way that some other roms and tables were. Just a thought.

I tested it with WinRAR and found no CRC errors, so I doubt that's the problem.

RESOLVED!

YeeeeeeeeHAH!!!!! I got my Firepower fix at long last! Visual Pinball 8.1 and VPinMAME reinstalled successfully! yahoo.gif

Probable reason: I DIDN'T FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS! Too impatient, way too much work goin' on right now, no time for fun, not even on the weekends.

I think I got in trouble in that I didn't realize that VPinMAME must be in the root directory of Visual Pinball. I inadvertently installed it incorrectly. I then got a very bad headache looking through the VBScript.

In the end, I figured, Ok, time to wipe it all out and start over. 2nd times a charm!

For anyone else having install issues, I'd suggest that they follow instructions CAREFULLY in that video, "How To Install Visual Pinball", by ynnebbeny @ YouTube. This video is up to date as of a week ago, and, if you follow the instructions entirely, unlike me, you'll soon be playing pinball to your hearts content.

PacDude's Firepower (Firepower_PD_1-6.vpt) is a VERY excellent recreation of this classic arcade table! cool.gif This reminds me so much of the actual Firepower arcade machines that came out in the 80's. It literally FEELS like the machine I played in the Navy, at the Norfolk Naval Shipyards. It was in the BEQ building in the lobby, right next to Gorgar, Laserball, Blackout and later Alien Poker! It is VERY realistic in looks, game play, everything. It is a substantial upgrade to the version (Greywolf & Cutter's Firepower) that I was using in my previous VP installation. EXCELLENT job!

Thanks for the tips TrepTech,

this sounds like the same problem I posted about as well! I don't know how I missed this post, I DID do some searching before posting. I also don't know why my previous version "expired", can anyone explain why they expire once they're up and running perfectly fine??? Maybe I don't WANT to upgrade and leave well enough alone! smile.gif I also can't understand why my updated install initially worked fine with v 2.1, then next time I got those errors? Why/ how could THAT happen?

Anyway, I guess I'll have to carefully go back through and reinstall the whole thing and try to follow the instructions step by step again. I remember the original installation being a bit confusing and nerveracking, a bit of a PITA in short.... but it's great once it's running! I'll give it a shot and hopefully can get it, and will report back!

I am desperately trying to reinstall Visual Pinball with about 440 old downloaded VP6 tables and VPinMAME on my Win98SE mainboard (AMD K63+@550MHz, GeForce 3Ti220, 768MB RAM, 2 genuine ISA soundcards). I got VP8.1.1 to work, but the original VPinMAME 1.12.2 that ran decades ago now complains that this beta version of VPinMAME has expired, followed by a popup error "Can't create the controller class." When I try to install VPinMAME 2.7 with enabled KernelEx, It throws error "The vpinmame DLL file can't be loaded." When I turn KenelEx off, It says that my windoze version was too old. Even the URL link "www.pinmame.com" is dead.

Must the VPinMAME directory always be placed inside the Visual Pinball directory that contains VPinball.exe? (Doesn't help.) I have VP8 in "H:\Emulator\Windows\Pinball\VisualPinball\Software".

Is there a trick to either convince VPinMAME 2.7 (which by size seems the last one based on the old platform) to install, or a fixed exe of 1.12.2 with disabled expiration date? (I already tested to set system clock to 2003 without success.)

I eventually got VPinMAME 2.3 to run on Win98SE.

found here: http://pinmame.de/downloads.html

Apparently many early tables need the VBScript files additionally copied to the "tables" directory (they don't care about "scripts"), else e.g. Bally.vbs is not found. The script version likely should match the VPinMAME (here 2.3), but some (e.g. Black Hole) ask for a somewhat higher numbers. It runs all a bit jerky and not great (speech stutters etc.), but I guess this was exactly the way it had played in 2002.
