File Name: Time Warp FS B2S

File Submitter: Gilrock

File Submitted: 09 Aug 2014

File Category: VP 9.x B2S Cabinet Tables (B2S)

Author(s): Gilrock
Manufacturer: Williams
Year: 1979
ROM: Link to ROM
Permission to MOD?: Yes, with approval

This is my first table release and even though there were earlier versions of this table I wanted to start from scratch to learn VP.  I own a real Time Warp machine so all the artwork and plastics were created from photographs of my actual machine.  I also recorded real sounds from the machine for any sounds not provided by the roms.

I created this full screen version including a dB2S backglass and I've also created a desktop version.

I really wanted to have banana flippers but I'm not sure how to get them into the table and functioning properly.  I have the banana flipper models from the Future Pinball version I did of this table if anyone wants to help get them added to the table.

I started with a blank table and used all my original artwork.  I did a lot of inspecting of the Gorgar table to figure out how to do the bumpers and plunger since it was also from Williams about the same time period it had a lot of similar elements.  I had everything done in October 2013 except for converting my desktop version to full screen but I got side tracked with another software project.  So I don't remember exactly what parts of the script I borrowed but I believe it was for the plunger and fading lights and maybe a couple other items.  Those script snippets probably came from the Gorgar table but the comments in the script should provide credit where those snippets originated.

I liked the lighting I saw in Gorgar and other tables so I tried to recreate something similar by making the table darker and having areas near the bulbs lit up.  I spent time making the lights and shadows near the targets look realistic.  To create the lighting effects I actually used the B2S Designer to add lighting to the table graphic and then captured screenshots for the lighting bitmaps.

I developed it in VP 9.1.5 last year but I've also tested it in VP 9.9.0.

Also I had the table working with the DOF framework and had the LedWiz firing all my contactors and flashing my led flashers.  The tmwrp ROM isn't in the DOF config tool yet so what I did was used the Private Configuration feature and modified the Gorgar settings and then generated a ledcontrol.ini file and copied the grgar ROM line and pasted it in alphabetical order for where tmwrp would be and then renamed grgar to tmwrp.  I changed the bumper settings so that each bumper flashes one of my 5 led flashers blue.  The 5 bumper solenoids are S17 through S21.

So this was my ledcontrol.ini entry but yours may be different depending on which toys you have in your cab.  I really didn't look at every one of these to see if they made sense but the bumpers, flippers and front panel leds seemed correct.

I am impressed.  The table plays faster than the real one I played last year (and sure the banana flippers are missing but that's understood at this stage), but its very high on the fun factor and I'm going with the real one's slope was set too low !  ;)

BTW, that's a fantastic and unique ball image, I don't recall seeing it before.  Did you make this one yourself?  Well done!

Awesome job, and your first wow, way to hit the ground running! You and 32assassin are keeping me busy installing VP tables and deleting FP ones today!

You really put the work into this, it looks & sounds great. Hope someone can help you with the flippers, you nailed everything else!

BTW, the plunger needs to be moved to the right a few clicks. I did it my self and it now looks lined up with the ball.

Thanks Loafer....yes the ball image was one that I used when I created my cabinet artwork last year.  My son actually found it somewhere on the net.  I always liked how JP had his smurf ball so I wanted something unique so I put a scripted "G" for Gilrock on the ball.  I think the G came from the same font used for the Hyperpin logo.

Shadowsclassic:  Yeah I'll tweak the plunger when I do any updates.  I mainly developed using a Desktop view then rotated it to create the full screen.  I placed the plunger the same as it was on Gorgar but I kinda rushed doing the full screen perspective settings.  I completely forgot I should have looked at that table for the full screen settings.

For a first effort it's amazing!

I really appreciated all the work that you've put in. Hats off!

Great first table, I wish I had your talent in table building and Photoshop work. I'm sure it's a great help to have direct access to the real table you are building. Did you draw the playfield yourself?

I adjusted the formatting / layback settings to my preference; they are now at 1/35/75/270/1.34/2.02/1/-440/55/0 which gives me a little more "above" view.

I reverted to the standard ball image :) - while the one in the table is indeed very interesting, I feel the standard VP ball is closer to a real one.

Also, I had a problem with the lower kicker hole that it sort of got into a loop when it kicked out the ball, then the two bumpers kept sending it back to the hole 8-10 times in a row. To avoid this, I changed the scatter angle of the kicker hole to 30. Don't know how the real table behaves but the looping was a little boring after a while :)

Thanks again for a really excellent release.

htamas....I didn't draw the playfield completely but I ended up doing so much work it felt like I did.  I took a ton of photographs of the real table and I even went as far as removing all the plastics and bumper covers to expose as much as possible.  Its hard to take a single photo that looks correct so I started with a single overhead photo that I stretched to fit the pixel size I wanted and I used that photo as a reference for positioning my close up photos.  I spent a ton of hours blending each photo into the master image I was creating.  I used a drawing tablet in Photoshop to do a lot of fixing and retouching areas.  I was well into creating the playfield image when I discovered the actual Busorama font that matched the font used on the table so I decided to backtrack and redo all the text using the font because it looked sharper than what I was getting from the photos.

Yeah it seems like the kickers are working differently for each person.  I can only imagine that computer speed, frame rates, and vsync issues are causing the table to play differently for each person.  I had been away for several months so I just saw there is a new physics effort happening for VP and it describes changes that would probably fix this type of issue and make it more consistent for everyone because the physics won't be tied to the frame rate.

Thanks, what a great table!

A reminder for those who have analogue nudge etc. and get problems with the plunger animation, search for motion in the script and comment out lines 156-8, thus:

'If Plunger.MotionDevice> 0 Then
 '   Plunger.TimerEnabled = 1
'End If

Really nice one man. there's a version of this at the local pinball hall and the gameplay holds up! Like another user said, the speed is a bit faster on this, but that can be adjusted by changing the slope.

A buddy of mine came over and was checking out my cab, and said that he really wished someone would re-make Time Warp. It was an old favorite of his and he hadn't found one to play in years.   Quick search found your table and I loaded it into my cab.  Although he was missing the banana flippers, he was in heaven.   I think you made his Thanksgiving day!    Nice work!

primitive banana flippers could be added but they won't function properly.  ;(
