I've been fighting this for some time (and tried searching the forums) but no luck.

In many games like Medieval Madness (since it has a soundtrack) you can hear the pitch of the music and voices changes while playing.   I'm unsure why this is happening but is really distracting and makes everyone laugh in the room when they hear it.   Literally will go up a half-step in key and back down.   Effects both digitized voices and music of course but not the sound effects from VP itself.

Is there any audio settings that could fix this?  I dont know if it is the sample rate issue or even where to change it.   CPU usage is not high and using on board HD Audio... however I had this problem with a high end M-Audio card as well on another PC.

Thanks in advance!

Hi--to my knowledge, there is no way to improve the sound. Sound has always been what I call "scratchy"--some tables more than others. Only suggestion is to make sure you don't crank up the volume within the rom all the way. I find 25-27 to be about as much as you want to give it. Again--it varies from table to table.

This drives me nuts too.

It got a lot better when I switched to XP from Win7.   Have you tried the DX9 beta yet?  I suspect its better performance will also help.

Remember that VP, for the most part, is limited to 1 CPU core.  So if you have a 4-core processor (or 2-core with hyper threading), 25% CPU usage in the VP process means the VP thread is maxing out your CPU, and VPinMame may be struggling to get enough cycles.

Some say that forcing VP to use a single processor with an affinity tool might stop it as well.

I may have to try a couple of things.   The other problem is the rapid-clicking sound in the ROMs with music playing... more of a ticking sound.  However I think I hear similar sound in Pinball Arcade as well so may just be how emulation works.

The main issue is the pitch of the music that keeps changing-- I'm not getting scratchy sounds and my volume is set to 20.   The musical tone keeps warbling like an old VHS or cassette tape when listening to music.

i have that Problem too, i think it is something like a "Framerate=Auto" Setting for PinMame. so that when the CPU has more Time for it, it runs better (faster) and if CPU has lesser Time it runs slower. Disappointing...

The worst offender for this was Indiana Jones, as the theme song holds some long notes.   Kinda sounds like someone is playing with the whammy bar in Guitar Hero.    (That's a reference you young-uns that have never heard casette tape warbling might understand,  :) )

Is this a CPU issue (not fast enough) or just something that is inherent to pinmame?

Nope it's a thread issue, as DJRob stated: assigning VP to a single core and offsetting the rest to a secondary core fixes this problem.

I had this problem when i used win xp with the latest graphics card drivers (ATI).

Then I changed the Graphics driver to an older version and it fixed the pitch changing problem on mine.

Also I started again with Windows 7 and also the older graphics card driver and it runs a lot smoother on my 2 screen setup.

For me, I changed the volume to about 24 or 25, and lowered the frequency quite a bit. You can also go into Task Manager and look to see if any useless programs are running. Hope this helps! :good:
