I know we are primarily a pinball community here, but I was wondering if people were having issues with the most recent version of MAME 0.146? I was all in and had a bunch of fun games like 8-9 years ago, but then my PC died and I bought a PS3 and yadda yadda I would like to re-live my quarter pumping youth again! I am 99% sure that I never had the issue of "rom files or chd missing" in the volume that I am experiencing now...is that something new to this build? can I "downgrade" to rectify? just basics like NBA Jam TE, NFL Blitz, Contra, Street Fighter II CE, Turtles in Time...so on and so forth. while I have these on SNES (which STILL works!), I always preferred the arcade versions.

well that, and I am trying to justify a pin/mame cab build to my wife ;-) oh, it seems like most of the websites I used before are down/more of a PITA than my memory serves. is there a ROM resource link that someone could throw out there? about 60% of the files I was trying to mess around with from rom-world wouldn't run due to missing files. could just be bad luck in my part as well.

They change their roms alot - if you want to play the old games again, install the revision of MAME that had them working. Otherwise you'll need to re-download the roms that go with the current release.
As for links, a torrent would be your best bet, and then you can either download everything, or manually select which roms you need.

For MAME, the version of ROMs you use MUST match the version of MAME.exe you are using. If your MAME.exe is .146 then your ROMs need to match .146. I would start by using CLRMamePro to audit and verify your ROMs. This can update and fix some ROM's, after the scan/audit then you can connect to a torrent to download the updated/new ROMs.

I've learned the hassle of updating roms isn't worth always updating to the latest MAME.

Ditto. After upgrading to the latest a couple times and messing up what was working quite well, I've decided that being on the latest MAME (or Daphnie for that matter) isn't a top priority. Last update I pulled down all the new ROMs and now have everything working. Next time will be when I'm really bored.

I got the updated roms here:

http://www.mameroms.it/roms.php?list=v

This is not an endorsement of this site but it is really hard to find actual working roms for the newest Mame so try to be supportive if you can. I think they are out of Italy and knowing how fast these site come and go you will want to make a day of it and get the ones you want asap.

thanks unca, I'll check it out after work. I was directly to a different location by a fellow member (thanks gustav!) and I was working my way through it...

however, seems like I am shooting myself in the foot by NOT getting every blessed game out there, and that picking and choosing should be done on the backend...as opposed to trying to keep the downloading as small as possible. I finally got a few CHDs, but then my computer crashed mid DL...and it (the DL) hasn't restarted for like 3 days. might be SOL with that one!

the other problem being my attempt to get hyperspin to work. that FE seems to want EVERY game..and doesn't simply display the ROMs that I actually have. seems like a lot of script work to fix that (unless I am missing something) too. ugh! might be "forced" into using MaLa for simplicity sake and lose the slickness of hyperspin.

Hyperspin just has that stuff preloaded and you wipe out the stuff you don't want with the editor progie that comes with it. You can also tell hyperspin what systems you do have and what roms go with it. I did not have any luck beyond mame yet though on actually loading up the emulators and running roms in hyperspin. I did the massive downloads your talking about and their were tons of roms that didn't work along with tons of roms not in english and old time gambling roms I did not want. I mean really a 650 meg dl just to get one or two roms you want is lame. Use the site I gave to grab the ones you want and the big dumps just aren't worth all the hassle. The roms work with the latest mame and the mameui32. But you will have to tell Hyperspin where to find them and edit it.

Good luck in the hunt.
