Finally.. After pretty much almost 4.5 years.. :shok:

VPX and VPVR are finally 100% reunited!!

Started by the more than fearless Caligula_ as a fork of VPX 10.6, adding full OpenGL and VR support.

Then later-on continued with additional coding help from Rawnei.

Helped to stay alive by DJRobX and me, going through the pain of merging things back and forth between the two projects to have them stay in sync (while fuzzel also redid the whole UI for 10.7 in the meantime!).

Then roughly one year ago, vbousquet jumped in to even more fearlessly turn everything inside out once more while also modernizing the render engine, to be able to finally merge the two together into one unified codebase again (and adding new features on the way :)).

And not to forget jsm174 who helped all over the place during the merge (and he will also have some more spotlight soon with his additional insane coding work on VPX :))

While this 10.8 release may seem not THAT spectacular on the outside (unless you use VR, and compared to 10.7), internally at least as much happened as back then when we moved from VP9.2 (DX7) to VP9.9 (DX9) and then to VP9PhysMod.

So we're basically now all set to move forward, like we did with VP10 back then. Some progress you will already be able to see right after the 10.8 final happened.

So lets get the official beta phase going with https://github.com/v....0-1138-fff5f9d

Changelogs:

https://github.com/v...t/Changelog.txt

https://github.com/v...ndReference.txt

You may still report bugs in here, but if you're pretty sure that you found a major bug, then it would be much easier for us if you could please directly file an issue on github instead.

Thanks for any feedback and enjoy.. .. ..

Notable release highlights (check the txt for the even lengthier list :)):

Obviously: VR, and improved Stereo3D, and BAM headtracking

and choose between GL and DX9 rendering executables

Completely new Pause/ESC/F11 menu, allowing for interactive live editing

New reflection and refraction probe mechanism

Ball shadows and Flasher/Primitive lightmap shadows

Physical light bulb model to make fading, etc easier and more realistic

New camera layout mode, getting rid of all the old hacks (layback, etc)

External .ini saving instead of the registry setting

I haven't really tried the latest beta yet,

in previous versions the blink pattern put into scripts only worked correctly if the sequence started with the light on,

the sequence always starts with the light on even though it shouldn't.

The live editor is really cool! thanks a lot to the whole dev team!

Thanks to all again!! I notice the changelog states that SteamVR is supported for VR and if the SteamVR driver is not detected then the standard 2D mode will start instead. Curious if OpenComposite will be officially supported in the future as right now it is working perfectly without SteamVR but one has to use the older openvr_api.dlls (32 or 64bit) that have not been updated in a long time, attempting to use an updated OpenComposite openvr_api.dll results in errors or washed out colors. Speaking with the OpenComposite developers, they say that any support for the OpenComposite dlls with Visual Pinball would have to be done by the VPX developers :) That said, as mentioned ealier, right now there is no need for any updates as it is working fine.

I would rather wonder if OpenXR would be the way to continue.

With new exe file. The same problem occured when i was updating from 10.7.3 to 10.7.4, copied all files from 10.7.4 and ball started behaving weird. On 10.7.3 everything is working good, even color roms.

This is mindbending, especially if it also happens 10.7.3->10.7.4.

Which windows version is this?

I would rather wonder if OpenXR would be the way to continue.

From todays point of view OpenXR would be a better choice than OpenVR/SteamVR. At least for Oculus and Windows MR users and should not have any disadvantages for SteamVR users. But it probably also means some extra work on the existing VR code. But it might make sense to combine this with the camera rework https://github.com/v...ball/issues/467 by vbousquet.

Great job!

Thought my problem is now history, but with Kinect 2 ive got an very small table, thats no adjustable. On my sytem the GL 64 Bit Version only runs good. The 32 bit version crashes on start, like die last version.

Any idaes? changed my system to portraitmode. The tables were biger, but didnt fill the playfield. Portraitmode ists an option, because its making my pinuppopper crazy...

btw: Is a new pov-version on the way?

Some tables may show some objects under the playfield, which were not visible using vpx7, like for example in my AFM table. But most of the tables should play fine. At least all the ones I have tried plays fine. But since it is beta it should be used mostly for testing purposes, as maybe a new beta may break something, but knowing this vpx team, I guess it is quite save :) But seeing the new changes I guess authors will start using the new beta quite soon, mostly if you are using VR :)

These are my tables, sorted by date, all them playable with VPX 7 or newer:

After 18 years making tables, it is time to take a rest and let new authors do their thing.

I guess at last I'll play some more pinball :). But I'm sure I'll make some table updates from time to time :)

Windows 11. All drivers updated. I 'll try to install from aio installer VP 10.7 and then update to 10.8 and check if problem still occurs.

Not at the cab now, but i have a kinect 2 as well and I thought you need to set the width to 1 or something to show it correctly.
You need BAM already started an I use the gl version

@Toxie and team : great work guys. I really love the live editor part and VR is really, really good.
I hope that authors now will make hybride tables as a default.( yes JP, that will be 180 tables for you :P )
