File Name: Surf Champ (Gottlieb 1976)

File Submitter: Mustang1961

File Submitted: 21 Apr 2024

File Category: VPX/VPinMAME - MOD Tables

Author(s): Loserman76

Manufacturer: Gottlieb
Year: 1976
Permission to MOD?: Unspecified

Initial announcement from Jeff:
Surf Champ
http://www.ipdb.org/...ine.cgi?id=2459
Build/Coding by Loserman76
Artwork by GNance
'*  hauntfreaks - newer postit note images, environment file, lighting information, primitives
'*  BorgDog - his tables that helped me to understand more with VPX - and I probably lifted a primitive or 2 from them as well
'*  GNance - score motor tweaks to behave like a real EM, PostIt routines, Options menu
'*  JPSalas - gameroom backdrop
'*  Pinuck - Gottlieb chimes and score motor routines
'*  Arngrim - DOF coding and information
when game is not in progress, holding down left flipper for about 3-5 seconds will bring up the options menu. left flipper selects item, right flipper changes option
in addition to the "standard" keys (typically "1" to start game and "5" for coin), I've added "3" for coin and "4" for coin and auto-start game to simulate 3 coin slots
Shadow config settings:
Look for these 2 lines near the beginning of the scripting:
Const ShadowFlippersOn = true
Const ShadowBallOn = true
change to false if you want either of the shadows not showing on your tables

My view on "Surf Champ": I have never seen the game in real, but it represents in perfection the end of the EM- game developments. Today I offer you my version 1.0a with these changes:

Playfield

- new physic (cab optimized),
- new flipper caps without the black spot (thanks to mrtr32)
- improved ball and ball position plus ball stop in the plunger lane (different plunger sound with or without ball)
- toggle relay now in function (source code added): light indicators over top lanes now in correct function
- tilt function corrected
- games plays now as per playfield description and score card definitions
- light under kicker hole added
- light- indicators adjusted in brightness and a few in color
- both bumpers parallel engaged (thanks to jejepinball & kiwi)
- new timing for ball release - now after player up alternator ends
- the bumper triggers are now in colored plastic
- animated spinner- rod added, hole into playfield "drilled"
- flat drop targets in Gottlieb shape
- rolling sound level adjusted
- new POV for cab use
- all object sounds now in operation
- in game over state the plastics illumination stays on (the original behavior of all Gottlieb EMs)

Backglass

- rolling score reels
- many snippits for an improved score reels illumination and avoiding overexposure at color edges at can play-, and player up- indication, illuminated girl and game name
- "shoot again" indication added and script supplemented
- score memory: when you leave the table and reload it the score of the previous use will be indicated
-> attention: I changed the nv ram concept in order to implement this functionality, if you have still a nv ram in the user- folder delete it or replace it with the nv ram you find in the zip file (it is the Surf_Champ_76VPX.txt), otherwise the table will crash when loading the 1st time.
- thanks to Jeff's provident script is was easier than I thought to synchronize sound and reset action of the reels
- no click sounds from the BG anymore, no interference between BG and game sounds
-> thanks to Jarr3 for his sound removal tool for BGs

- ZIP contains game, BG file, nv ram (Surf_Chanp_76VPX.txt) -> "User"- directory, BG- and PF- pics for cab users

Thanks to Encrypted for finding the typo- error on the playfield!

-> corrected in game and picture in version 1.0b

All this in kind tribute to Jeff Whitehead.

Just so you are aware, I know how this site works.

At the time I made the post, when I clicked on said link, a forum message appeared that said, in effect, that there was no file found.

That's probably because of the main download page replacing the 1.0a version with 1.0b.
