Just on a side note for anyone trying to figure all this out... switching to the 10.8.1 "channel" is (as of right now) not going to be your best solution to a problem in the master "channel".  You are going to end up with more problems than you had in the first place.  Best options are possibly rolling back on the master channel to an earlier revision, or making sure you have the latest revision on the master channel, or waiting for a fix from the VPX team.  There's a slew of posts here (even seeing in on the other site) where people have switched to a 10.8.1 build and have weird problems no one else is having.  At some point 10.8.1 will be released as a public beta and then we can assume it will have less issues.

I doubt many people will read this, but I'm posting with the sincere hope of helping people have less issues and confusion.  Here is information on how to find the latest revision of the beta (you may think you are on the latest and not be).    How to Download Latest VPX 10.8 Beta Builds - Visual Pinball - VPForums.org

If branch no say Master, suggest not trying unless you are specifically testing something that is being done in the off branch
unless you want a migraine that no one is going to help you with

So far, every link I've seen to the discord channel (for the standalone version) has been invalid. Would it be possible to post (or DM) an up-to-date one? Thanks guys

I have been playing around with this and vpx64. I think GL wont run on my system (slow). I was using a 1080p tv and the picture looks bad. Do need a 4k tv for this setup?

No, not really.

4k would look more detailed if you got a 40 something inch tv

but 1080p should not look like garbage

I'm on the latest Master version. I had ball stutter on dx. I tried all kinds of settings. Decided to try GL and boom my stutter was gone using frame pacing 0,0. It's worth a try in my opinion. Easy to install you should try it.

The correct setting is: supersampling = disabled (used to be 100%). So at 50% you're actually degrading the visuals.

When you set up your POV and have a hard time to choose between stretch to fit which shows everything on the table including apron and elements in the back but generates a stretched horizontal look or not stretch which preserves the aspect ratio of the original table but cuts off parts at the bottom namely the apron and plunger and/or parts at the back, you might take a look at the feature request I’ve posted on GitHUB 2 days ago:

Dual POV preset, switchable during gameplay via button or automatically according to state table currently is in

In essence I suggest to have 2 POV sets instead of one and make it possible to switch between them with the push of a button at any time a table is loaded even during play.

The idea arose when I realized, that I do not need to see the apron, plunger and artwork in the back while I’m playing. I prefer to have all the screen size for the playfield where the action happens without any distortion of the playfield. Except when the ball is at the plunger and I want to do a skillshot. Then stretch to fit would guarantee that I see the plunger and the markings on the screen.

While in attract mode before/after a play I prefer stretch to fit as well to explore all elements of the table or read the text on the apron . And without any cropping it looks nicer even if stretched. But that’s personal taste.

With 2 sets I could choose the best POV for each occasion.

Icing on the cake would be if I could choose a POV to be activated automatically for each of the 3 occasions: Before/after play, in play but ball at plunger and in play (no ball at plunger). And VPX would automatically switch between the 2 POV sets with a smooth transition. A dream.

Then I’d need to manually switch between the POVs rarely only for very special occasions like if I want to read the apron text while cradling a ball.

If you like the idea and have a GitHUB account reply with a +1 and/or give it a  :good:

For me, updating to the latest Beta release killed nearly every single one of my legacy POV, I'm having to go back and change them to window - which is fine since I've been meaning to. But that may be why some people are confused at how bad things looked all of a sudden. I was getting a squished ball and the POVs I had weren't displaying as they used to.

You are using an old revision.  The squished ball fix, in a recent master revision, has been discussed here, over the last couple pages.  It's best to make sure you are on the latest revision before you start editing all your tables.

After a few weeks, and many many bugs squashed, here is a first release candidate: https://github.com/v....0-1873-bdd0673

It is supposed to be mostly bug free albeit a few known bugs: SMAA is off, the UI is no good in VR, and you won't be able to overlay anything over the OpenGL window.
