I just fell upon this thread - and so glad I did.  This is amazing - just shows how much work and talent go into building these tables that we download and play without much thought about how they are built.

Thank you so much for this.

Chapter 9: creating full table view flashers

I have been adding 8 flashers to WhirlWind and I have done that in a new way. Those 8 flashers show their flashing effect on the whole table. I made this work like this:
- (almost) all you see in Whirlwind are VPX primitives with my Blender/Octane prerendered textures. In order to show the flashing effects I duplicated all the primitives but made them slightly bigger then the existing ones.
- In Blender I rendered again the whole table for each flasher with only the one flasher illuminating the table (no environment, nothing else). This generates two textures: one for the playfield/sidewalls and one for everything else (see one of my earlier posts for explanation). Different this time is that I made the transparency of these textures dependent on the brightness of the image. So when the flasher illuminates a sidewall, that part of the texture is more/very visible, while an area of the table which is unaffected is fully transparent in the texture.
- If I would duplicate all primitives in the table for each flasher separately, the triangle count would be way too high, so I employed some trickery. I duplicated the primitives only twice for 8 flashers. So there is one primitive for four flashers. In script I alternate the four flashers textures on one primitive. So if one flasher is firing, it is displayed every fourth frame. This is exactly what I wanted, since a flasher is supposed to be - well - flashing.

The result you can see in this video:

There is still a lot to do on the table, at least:
- adding my new Williams bats
- making the moving ramp work (move), as well as animate the droptargets and the regular targets
- animating the two lights on top of the cellar
- optimizing the insert based other flashers
- adding magnasave key operated LUT's (for contrast and brightness)
- adding ballshadow
- adding a background for DT
- performance tuning (there are quite a lot of timers in this table as it is...)
- bughunting & testing
- scriptcleaning
- etc

Regarding publication: I first will publish it for cabinet & desktop, after that I will look into optimizing and expanding it for VR (maybe...).

Wow, this is certainly progressing beautifully.... where can I get me one of those pink ball savers for the real world (that sounds a bit odd when I say it out aloud)?

Flupper1 thx for sharing the progress :)

Terrific work right there

I’ll just add that this finally showcases my work for a brand new authentic Whirlwind mechanical sounds in there as well.

This wouldn’t be possible without the help of @Blackmoor and @wrd1972
Thanks a lot guys for your help getting these Whirlwind recordings

Putting pictures of real table and saying that the work is being done is easy...rsrsrsrssr....I can only believe by seeing, or rather playing....rsrsrsr

jokes aside... the thing is at a really insane level! the talent that some people have is really enviable... I wish I had at least 10% of that sensitivity.

flupper1, simply amazing your work!

Thank you very much
