The desktop fs debate is getting as old and tired as the vp vs fp debate.
Everyone plays pinball how they like to play it. Neither way is better than the other.
Sometimes I think pinheads are the most stubborn opinionated group of people on the planet

Come on now. This hobby was BUILT for YEARS & made POPULAR by DESKTOP tables. Desktop tables have sucked people like myself deep into the hobby of pinball & even owning real pinball machines, so I'm pretty sure desktop mode is effective. You are disrespecting a lot of members & VP greats by suggesting that they don't know how to enjoy pinball. I've said this before. But I have real machines, thus I have no desire for a cab. I enjoy desktop for when I'm sitting at my computer. I wouldn't play VP at all if it weren't on desktop.
At least I admit that I understand why some people prefer cabs or FS. Each person might be after a different experience & believe it or not, it might not be the same thing you are after. For me, & I understand pinball pretty well, I find the desktop view to be more realistic because it is (or can be with the right inclination/FOV settings), & that is just a fact. A cab is more realistic if you want the feel of standing at a pinball machine, at the expense of some table distortions & losing depth. For some people that is a worthy tradeoff, but not everybody.
For me, what I look for in realism is how a table looks & plays, not what I play it on. I play on my ipad, phone, ps3, 360, pc... I don't require a cab... & many pinheads out there aren't much different than me & we aren't going anywhere. Not to mention that there might be some desktop users out there who would love to have a cab but don't have thousands in spending cash to burn on one, or maybe just don't have the time to deal with one. & you are telling all those people that they are playing crap pinball because they don't have a small fortune to spend? Shame on you. We are trying to attract members to here, not push them away by telling them that VP sucks if you don't have a cab. As long as people keep making desktop tables, they will get downloaded.
Calm down...again...rob. I have an opinion on the desktop, don't jump to conclusions that I'm telling people to spend thousands on building a cab. And blur(I think it was him) built a 'paper' cab just to try the experience...not that costly.
But I'd like to focus on your 'hobby' point. I'm still not sure how you can't see this, but I, like many, grew up playing old SS pinballs and there wasn't a computer anywhere in sight. There wasn't a desktop to play, it never drove me into this hobby, what drove me into this hobby was having the ability to play all the old pinballs I played as a kid in my home. And the only way I see playing pinball is standing up pressing buttons on the side of a cabinet, looking up briefly at a back glass at my score, all while nudging the ball to where I want it to go. No sitting allowed.
To me, that's pinball.

OK fine. Like I said we have have different things we look to get out of VP, so all I'm saying is please stop insisting desktop users are somehow missing out on something. Let people like what they like & also realize that you need desktop to make the VP world go round. I know not everybody realizes that for some reason, but that is why I say it. I have my own feelings on what I like, but I certainly don't expect the next guy to be after the same thing I am.

Ok, well then...chew on this...desktop sucks!!
J/K...I had to...
Somehow, in some odd way, I always enjoy our disagreements.

Indeed. And you would be right. Makes no sense for such a niche hobby.

Time to rise this old thread from the grave . . . I just got my beta key for the Steam version of Pinball Arcade. I didn't see a thread on it so I revived this one. I'm downloading now. Unfortunately I won't be able to send it through the paces until tomorrow.
Worth mentioning I got access to the beta by supporting one of their kickstarters, Star Trek Next Gen I believe (Maybe Twilight Zone). That was a long time ago, totally forgot I was inline to get it.
The PC release won't be long now.

I got the Beta email from Pinball Arcade as well...
"Access your Steam Beta code by entering the email address associated with your Kickstarter into the form located on the following page http://www.pinballarcade.com/Beta/"
However when I go to the website (http://www.pinballarcade.com/Beta/) that should give me the Beta key I get "404-URL Not found" error.
Is this working for others?

How does it play compared to the android version, which I think plays pretty well. Are the physics good? reliable flipper action, meaning you can actually hit the targets you are aiming at, without delay at all and little scatter angle. (unlike FP flippers).

Yeah, I really like to see some gamplay-vids.

OK, got a chance to play around with it and before anyone feels like they are missing out . . . it is a beta. If there versioning is to be believed we are on version 0.0008. Hard to say where their internal builds are at.
No cabinet mode, no portrait top down view yet. I would say there is a lot of work to do.
However, if their frame per second counter is to be believed it is rocking a pretty darn steady 60 fps on my system. None of the micro stutter that could be found on the 360 version. Seemed smooth as silk. I will keep you guys posted on the progress if new builds get released. Flipper response seemed good.
As for video's, well you aren't missing anything. The graphics are currently not any better than the videos that are already available for TPA. There is no DirectX11 lighting that was in that PS4 video. Hoping that gets in before the official release. If anything amazing comes through I'd consider setting up a video but at this moment a video might do more harm than good.
Played Scared Stiff and when the camera panned up to "Stop the Spider" on the back glass the back glass image was noticeable low rez. I could go on and nit pick but this is an early beta and that is exactly the kind of stuff you would expect to find. Kinda shocked the frame rate was good this early.

Ok so it's a beta. But something tells me this will end up like the Mac release. No cab view and no enhanced lighting. Maybe they will get to it one day but I think their priority is to get it out to the masses in the same form as the Mac version.
It's a shame but basically just means we'll have to wait I believe a very long time before we ever see proper multi screen cab support. I hope I'm wrong but from what I've seen since their inception this is probably a realistic and likely prediction.

Someone didn't listen to Mr. Reitmeyer about not posting videos during beta.
It has to warm up...SO IT CAN KILL YOU!
