Question re the junk rated 838's.... would it be possible to hack/remove the cross-over (or whatever) and allow the full range of frequencies to go to the L/R channels? (while allowing the bass amp to carry on as normal?

Rusty,

The LP838 uses a TDA7057AQ  for the stereo amplifier.  Although there is passive tone control, the only crossover is two capacitors that feeds the single channel TA8201 subwoofer.

Does that mean that the TDA7057AQ is already getting the full range of freq inc all bass and bypassing the crossover would make no difference?

I checked parts express where someone asked if both channels received full range, and they answered yes.

Yeah, there is no mystery with these Chinese implementations.  They use the application notes as a guideline and not a rule.
