Hi Stuzza,

Fellow Aussie here from SA. Retired and looking to build a VP machine for my grandkids. The learning curve is steep but slowly starting to make sense with a lot of help from communities like this forum.

Am amazed at the artwork you have turned out and from what I gather from reading post I might be able to get some artwork that you have already created? Is that correct? If so how does one go about looking and choosing what might be available.

Looking at Williams Wide body that will fit a 43'" play field. Currently looking at what available options for a cabinet but I assume irrespective a William wide body should be a standard size?

Any help in being able to get some artwork would be of great assistance as I don't have an artist bone in my body.

Regards,

Ian

Any artwork he has available for public use he has here i think

ONEDRIVE

And yes, a williams wide body cabinet is a size standard

Cheers PB Wizard for the link.

Think I might be getting confused not sure if this cabinet it mentions Williams standard legs so it doesn't mean I assume that is a William's wide body?

https://gameroomsolu...inball-cabinet/

Would I be right in assuming the artwork that Stuzza has kindly posted for download can be scaled to suit the sized unit this is?

You can rescale art to suit yes

On the cabinet you showed me, i can not attest to their build quality but i will say
Buyer beware.

Understand what you are getting.

At the price range they are offering, i promise you that is going to be laminated MDF, not actual Plywood of any type.
Basically same kind of material that the flat pack furniture like you can buy at walmart etc is made from.

Not saying that is a bad thing if one understands that and is OK with it, but you should know up front what you are getting.

I do not know their dimensions, and if they adhere strictly to Williams measurements or not.

And i can not attest to the grade of hardware they use.

They also do not appear to have much along the lines of assistance after delivery of the empty cabinet, nor any customization during the build.

You may want to at least look over what VirtuaPin offers, and you could even talk to them.

At least, regardless of what route you take, you will do so with fully understanding before hand.

If you do go with a cabinet built from MDF, i do suggest before you even try to assemble it, that you seal all non laminated surfaces
A good clear poly floor varnish will work.

Humidity and moisture is not a friend to MDF
Over time it can swell or debond it and the MDF becomes brittle (more so than normal) and crumbly

Thanks again for your feedback.

Was aware what they are offering is double sided black laminated and that it is like you find in flat pack furniture. Watched GRS assembly video, what I liked in it appears precision CNC profiled and uses what looks what kitchen cabinetry uses. Looks easy to assemble and easy enough to add SSF which I am slowly getting my head around.

Agree with your comments about MDF, the unit will be located in a family cave about 200metres from the ocean hence leaning toward the double sided laminate.

Just waiting for a shipping quote from GRS which could be the killer!

If you are by the ocean like that, just do what you can to reduce it's ability to suck moisture into the MDF

MDF is not evil per se, and it machines very well
It is also very dense and tends not to vibrate

things it does not do very well are
exist with moisture and flex
Moisture you already know what it does
Flexing, well it is brittle and flexing tends to break or crumble it.

A word about SSF and MDF

There is a reason why MDF is popular in the construction of speaker cabinets, and then laminated with hardwood or fabric etc.

MDF is dense, and the fibers go every direction.
It is kind of acoustically dead, does not like to vibrate or transmit sound well
(which means it wont interfere with the design of the speaker cabinet)

SSF exciters will not work as well on MDF as they will plywood, you may find you have to move their positions a lot to get the effect you are looking for

I might try 1st buying a single exciter, just to see how well it works with that cabinet.
There are other options besides exciters for getting some kind of SSF into the cab, one of which entails taking a different approach to the audio set up
They use what appears a wide lockdown bar to accommodate the dual purpose arcade machine function.
And that lockdown bar whispers to me to install the front of table speakers under it and drill a neat pattern of tiny grill holes and run a full 5.1 channel
audio system in it, or if you order the speaker panel with no cuts and do that part yourself, a 7.1 audio system in it with a separate set of table rear, and backglass speakers
(there is room) and still fit the 15" LCD in there for DMD and topper etc, unless you prefer the pinDMD

I personally would go with an LCD
The PinDMD's look amazing, but the LCD can display anything including PUP paks and other content that just is not meant to be put in a real DMD

But that is a personal choice you have to make

Great feedback.

Not sure if the composite material in the GRS melamine cabinet is MDF or partial board?

Good advice to try one exciter before getting too excited!

Well, i would probably contact them and ask

I would hope it is made of MDF

particle board is not as dense and finishes roughly cause it's kind of "fluffy"

Not as strong either and does not hold screws well, even with glue.

If it was particle board, i think i would ask around on the forum, see if someone has some blueprints to share
and if you are trying to keep a low budget, buy a couple sheets of MDF and have a local cabinet company cut it for you.

MDF is very flat, so it paints or takes a laminate very good, and imperfections etc can be smoothed and finished with auto body filler

use a water proof yellow glue on all joints and that will take care of sealing those raw edges as well.
The rest you can prime, paint and then apply a graphic to

You can strengthen the joins by using real wood corner bracing, glued and screwed.
On MDF always pre drill where ever a screw goes
and use the screws made for MDF, they have deep sharp threads.
Always put glue in the screw holes for final assembly.

I like the yellow asphaltic resin glue myself, it is water proof and it is strong.
I have glued and clamped snapped guitar necks and head stocks (dont ask) with it, and had them come out like nothing ever happened
and they never came apart.

Hi stuzza. Your artwork is amazing and I hope to have you do some for me in the near future.

Unfortunate to say there is someone on Etsy selling your work. Megacade is the name.

Yeah seen that before.  Plenty of people sell my free stuff.  Doesn't really bother me anymore.  I put it out there for everyone to use so as long as people have been able to use it and enjoy it.   Never thought all those years ago when I started making art that one day I could literally walk into a retail store here in Aus and see a virtual pinball machine (chinese) with some custom artwork that I put together.

Geertjan, I am also working on a cabinet of my own, but finding it difficult to find high quality images to use. Where did you find yours? Are they 96dpi or higher?

I used backglass images mostly. i searched for them on google, and took the highest resolution files i could find.

I just checked the files and yeah you are right, looks like he provided the right side twice.  However, very easy to flip.  Just load up the right side file then in photoshop go to Image - Image Rotation - Flip Canvas Horizontal.  Then go to any text layers - ie. the logo and the bottom text line and individually flip those back - Click on their layer and go to Edit - Transform - Flip Horizontal.

Hi,

If you mean the one with the big death star in the centre then that one was never finished.  It was just a mockup I played with for a while but never did anything with so their is no backbox or front for it.  I'm happy to discuss finishing it off as a custom piece for you if you are interested.  Feel free to PM me.
