Well I guess it pays off to be pissed off!! After the debacle game I had yesterday that locked up on me with 2 balls left and already near the 600M, I came back with a vengeance today! I think this one is gonna tough to be beat because for me this was a couple of years in the making, from
VP8 onward. I know Bolt could do it though, because he already had 900M, but that was also in the good old
VP8 days.
I proudly present my new Grand Champion score on LOTR (
FS JPSalas version 2.3): --> 1.133.375.960 <-- (JOR)
This is the first time that I topped 1B on LOTR. I already had passed 800M when I reached Valinor Multiball for the first time. This is the grand wizard mode of LOTR which can only be reached by (I quote liberally from the rulesheet at pinball.org):
1) Complete FOTR MB, achieve Super Jackpot for an Elf Gift at minimum
2) Complete TTT MB, achieve Super Jackpot for an Elf Gift at minimum
3) Complete ROTK MB, achieve Super Jackpot for an Elf Gift at minimum
4) Play all 6 Rings Modes (Completion not required)
5) Play There and Back Again (Completion not required)
6) Collect all six Elf Gifts
7) Destroy the Ring (this has to be done in order, if you destroy the Ring before 1-6, everything resets!!)
A new music piece (very beautiful!) started, the
DMD displayed a nice graphic (see attached pic) and I got a 4-ball multiball (not sure if this was augmented by Gollum MB, but I think not) with a generous ball saver. This ball saver seemed to be replenished a couple of times, probably by a lit Palantir shot. Because I was focused on scoring big, I just kept my concentration at keeping balls in play. It looked like the whole playfield was slowy strobing and I thought all the major shots were lit. It looked a bit like how a combination of Ring Frenzy and Victory Laps would work: made shots seemed to get unlit and get added to a jackpot, and then a specific shot (my guess would be the Barad-Dur shot but it also could have been the central Ring Shot) gives the total jackpot bonus. I saw a lot of nice jackpot scores pass, as big as 5M or 7M at a time, sometimes a lot less (which seem to point towards aforementioned setup). It may also be that the major shots themselves would be worth that much, and looking at my total Valinor score, that may just be the case: anyway Valinor MB gave me 345M (!) which pushed me over the 1B score. Normal play resumed when I drained to one ball. I was as you can guess giddy all the time, just to have reached Valinor, but I guess I played a respectable Valinor MB too!
The rest of the game was not that special at all. I had a slow start, even thinking of quitting when I drained my first ball at around 45M. I also missed completing a couple of modes by one or two shots, so I felt a bit out of synch. But somewhere in the second ball I got going and really got hot at the movie MB's, using Gollum to resurrect them when drained to one ball and hitting the add-a-ball without a fault. This time I got all of them twice, and reached Valinor on the second run of them. I got extra balls from the usual suspects (7th Barad-dur hit, Elven Gift, and Ring Frenzy). I now can confirm that normal Ring Frenzy gives a 2nd extra ball when completed again (although the minimum requisite is still unclear for me: it seems you have to score at least 2 shots to each Ring insert shot, maybe some of them 3). This may be unlimited. There and Back again gave 37M with one last shot lit, then I drained. The best moment for me (besides reaching Valinor offcourse!) came when my 3,5 year old daughter stood beside me and began questioning what I was doing, while I was playing Valinor MB, she asked me "why are you smiling so much daddy?". It reminded me a bit of the scene in The King of Kong when Steve Wiebe was on his way to his first world champion HS on Donkey Kong and his son came screaming down the stairs, asking to get his behind wiped.....
Well, this is probably it for me on LOTR for quite some time, that's always the sad part of getting such a high score. It robs me of motivation to do it again. So fellow pinheads, I formally challenge you all to get this one beat so I must return! And thanks for sticking with me in a post that got way too long.....
