Yeah, Black Hole was/is giving me also some headaches. :/
Please keep on testing so that i can collect a list of things to look at/test fixes with.

God damn Stern, stop making re-runs - I so want Game of Thrones. My favorite machine by far. Spike1build, even the potential name has a nice sound to it. Time to play some of the mentioned machines, waiting. *SIGH*
From now on. I won't help anyone here at VPF. Please ask Noah why that is.

Don't be sorry. We're the ones that are sorry for you - using such a crappy antivirus program. Recheck it please https://www.virustotal.com/gui/

Because of the UPX-packed and some other old tools putting out the false virus reports. Visual Pinball X and PinMAME. Visual Pinball 8 and 9 have no reports.
Malicious
Packed.Win32.MUPX.Gen@24tbus
BehavesLike.Win32.Dropper.tc
Generic/HEUR/QVM18.1.078F.Malware.Gen
MAME used to have reports until they change the tools to build. This is from many years ago. MAME doesn't have any reports now.
Just ignore the reports. Most of the scanners ignores.

Homework:
PLEASE TEST, and let me know if there is now missing/more-weird-than-before speech:
Gottlieb:
Mars God of War
Volcano
Black Hole
Devil's Dare
Rocky
Striker
Q*Bert's Quest
Caveman
Taito:
Cavaleiro Negro
Fire Action (Deluxe)
Gork
Hawkman
Lady Luck
Titan
Vegas
Ok @Toxie, so far
Cavnergo:
Phrasing and inflection seem very good.
Pitch seems typical of what was in popular use with the Votrax in the 80's
Modulation seems good (meaning not really noticeable)
The S's seem a bit edgy, but that could be the way the voice phrasing was programmed in
Votrax was kind of created to speak english, so it can be a little odd when made to do another language.
Will need to compare that against some others.
All in all, the implementation of Votrax appears to be better than that of recent MAME flavor, for this table anyways.
blkhole7:
There is a phrase, made repeatedly when game is over, not intelligible. intended?
It is a 3 syllable, 3 note phrase which is followed by a series of static pops, the pops i think might be an attempt at a lower frequency sound
like a boom or explosion type of sound
There is also a broken static sound when you lose
I think this is an explosion sound, it is being produced by the Votrax, as it is not present if you set SC01 volume to 0
Re-Entry and other phrases not intelligible at all, distorted / broken
blckhole: (revision 1 ROM)
Voices intelligible, sounds like votrax, has a slight pitch / pacing sweep, but it may in fact be programmed that way.
voice clear.

blkhole2:
Voice seems lower octave, perhaps intention in the ROM revision?
doubt is flaw in pinmame

bhol_ltd:
Did not test, ROM does not function properly (has no Votrax chip anyways)
blkholea:
No votrax chip to test
Other ROM audio as normal
blkhole7:
Phrasing more intelligible, some in the ROM pertaining to the Votrax data?, not sure if someone tinkered or it's a gottlieb change
to try and improve the phrasing
The 3 syllable/tone thing after game over is supposed to loop back to "Do you dare to enter the black hole" which it only does in attract mode on initial ROM boot
but not after playing a game and letting it lose.
Then it just repeats 3 syllables that are not intelligible, followed by a series of static pops
as noted above
The voice phrase when coin is inserted does the same thing.
When ROM is 1st booted, it makes a little sound when a coin is dropped, like "Eck" but i think he is supposed to sing a little tune?
after a game has ended, that sound comes out as only static
Rebooting the ROM returns it to normal.
Explosion sound when you lose is still broken and distorted, and it is being synthed by the votrax as disabling the votrax volume removes it.
blkhol7s: no Votrax chip, works as intended best i can tell, though the audio is a bit flat sounding
as compared to the other roms
This is all i have gotten to test so far
Sorry guys i have a virus detection at file: PinMAME.exe (3.3beta)
--> HEUR/APC !
using avira free antivirus
this will happen with pinMAME alpha/beta tests
Just tell the AV it is ok

qbquest:
The good.
Our votrax emulation is not muffled like MAME's
The voices are crisp and sharp
The pitch and inflection is more accurate.
The bad
There is some static pop noise present
It is especially noticeable in attract mode when qbert does his patented "Whoaaaaaaaaaaaaawww"
Keep in mind, i do not know if this is in the emulation, or was present in the Gottlieb hardware itself, since we do emulate the entire package.
But it is there, possibly related to the cause of the static seen in black hole?
Also, and not sure if this is emulation fault, or a thing simply present in the Gottlieb implementation, the sound that the Whoaaaa is chorused with
seems modulated in and out of phase/pitch with the votrax voice.
That may not be a fault of the emulation, or it may be that our votrax is off a small amount in pitch.
If so, it would only probably show up in Qbert, he is the only thing i can think of off hand that attempts to sing in chorus with another sound.
This is the same sound that you would here if you jump Qbert off the side of the playfield in the arcade video game.
Those things aside, i think our votrax implementation is going a better direction
Qberts voice is much clearer, and he does not sound like he is talking with a mouth full of marshmallows

Hawkman:
Well at 1st i though hawkman was a no go, rom freezing like.
Then i recalled something JP had said about timer intervals on old tables, and sure enough, pinmame timer was set to create an einstein rosen bridge.
Ok now we rocking
Going to need someone fluent in south american portuguese, cause i'd swear i hear the little bastard use the words pendejo and punta
but then maybe he is supposed to?
Aside from bad language, i think the Votrax sounded very good, it is hard to get absolutely perfect pitch across 700 different implementations
with various different external things influencing the outcome, but i think pinmame's votrax emulation is quite a lot closer to it than arcade mame's
Especially when it comes to actual words in a lower register.
I did not notice any static or noise, or the odd corruption of the playback i am seeing in blackhole after the 1st game ends
I am comparing our hawkman to this
FWIW, i can not get my VS100 to sound exactly like a Votrax
And it IS a Votrax, but it's needed a few bandaids over time

@Toxie
Would it be very hard to have pinmame make a reg entry for the rom Alias?
so like if ROM is acd_170h
and VPMalias.txt lists
acdcluci,acd_170h
pinmame makes a reg key for acdcluci
to save the rom prefs in?
I realize the same can be accomplished via table script
but i think a lot who play dont know what to do with the script
not to mention, it is a bit of a pain in the but to open table A
position DMD
possibly change sound value
in some cases maybe even set DMD not to show at all
exit back to editor
go to regedit
copy the required values down
then add the right lines to table_init, and hope you know the rights lines
then save table
Then open a table that shares same ROM
repeat process

Sometimes the PinMAME beta crash and then turn off my Display sounds driver. But it doesn't mess with the default sounds at all. I have to reboot the PC every time it does that. lol
Gone from the sounds list after the crash. Also a new number show up after reboot. Right now it at number 5.
Visual Pinball doesn't crash without the PinMAME running. ![]()

If you have a sound option that you don't use at all, you could try to disable them completely. I haven't experienced any such issues myself. Is there any specific table that crash ? Sterns ? Taito ? Any pattern or something you do ? Ah. See that Toxie was on the same idea as me, but, again, yes, at91jit can crash tables for me, but, never change the sound option. The way around crashing tables is either. Load table by first starting vpx and the file -> open, turn off at91jit or use my frontend.
