Hoping someone can help me. I have select tables that have this rather ugly unrealistic looking ball that I can't seem to replace. I have tried assigning it in the editor, I tried the above instructions, renaming then importing. However, in Sinbad for example, I see a bunch of ball images listed. How am I supposed to  know which one it is actually using? The attached is what it looks like. Whereas, many other tables have balls that look more lifelike. So in short, how do I figure out which ball the table is actually using? None of them seem to look exactly like the one in the pic when I select them all in image manager. Also, If I import the renamed ball, it gets added with dup name in addition to the one that was already there. I noticed even if I don't select a ball image within the editor, it still pulls this ball so it must be pulling from elsewhere. Struggling to figure out how it is pulling the ball image.

Post a link to the sinbad table you are using. Post the ball image file you are trying to use

Desktop or cabinet?
Nvidia or AMD video card?

VP has a default ball image in the exe, so if one is not specified externally,it uses the internal image

Ball_HDR and scratches_vp10 (decal) both attached and is what I just tried using.

Sinbad Ball.png attached is a screenshot of what it looks like in Sinbad.

Roller Coaster Ball.png is a screenshot of what the same ball looks like in Roller Coaster.

Here is what I just tried:

1. Downloaded fresh copy of Sinbad via above link

2. Made note of the ball image name shown in the editor (Ball_HDR)

3. Renamed the desired ball to Ball_HDR

4. Opened image manager and deleted the existing Ball_HDR entry from the list.

5. Imported the 'new' Ball_HDR and played the table. As you can see, the same ball in Sinbad looks entirely different from Rollercoaster.

6. Did same for the decal image from roller coaster renaming to scratches_vp10 to match the one specified in Sinbad, deleted the original scratches_vp10 and replaced with the one from Roller Coaster.

Seems like I get the same looking ball whether I specify it or not within the editor so either there is another setting messing up the look or it's pulling from somewhere else.

all in all, the same ball/decal combo in Sinbad looks nothing like what it looks like in Roller Coaster. I"m wondering if perhaps it's some other setting within the table that is altering it's appearance?

VPX 10.6 Beta

Cab with 3 monitors

Nvidia

(can't get the decal file to attach for some reason)

I don't see where you linked to a Sinbad table, but the one I have does not have a Ball Image specified, so it uses the default one which appears to be what you are getting (hard to tell for sure on tiny picture though).  You need to specify the ball image and decal (scratches) in the options.

I did specify the desire ball image and decal. See attached. But min still is not right. I'm at a loss with why the same ball would be so different on two tables. I'm must be pulling from somewhere else. I don't have the overwrite image set in video options either.

Environment Emission image and light emission scale will change it drastically.

still no change. it's like everything I do makes zero difference in ball appearance. makes no sense. I tried exporting the environment emission image from roller coaster then importing to Sinbad, also make sure the other lighting settings were the same. ball still will not show any different.

Yes, that's how the image ball_HDR looks in FS mode. I recommend that you just remove the image and use the build inn image, since it is the one that look best in FS mode.

I played with my balls this morning ;)

I used this version https://www.vpforums...&showfile=11793

Pics below in order

1. Sinbad table with no ball image(default ball image)

2. Using bpj's ball image.  Ball changed as expected

3. BPJ's ball but I changed Ambient setting from 25,25,25 to 0,0,0.  A little less washed out, but not much diff on my screen

4. 3rdaxis big ball.  Ball changed as expected

5. 3rdaxis other ball.  Ball changed as expected

gtxjoe-

Do you feel it's important to keep the ball image size to a minimum say 256X256 to maintain a good framerate? From what I've tested I can't seem to notice any difference but that's just my pc.

I think the most important thing for me is no matter what table or what ball I'm using is that the ball has full a contrast from pure black to pure white.  So If the specular highlight

is pure white on the image and the black is inky black it should be the same in VP. I hate when it's gray and milky.

Personally I think everyone should take a picture of a real pinball directly on top of their pincab to best represent the environment map that the machine is actually in. And then adjust the image so it best matches the real ball;)

Just did a quick test taking a picture of a real ball with a cell phone camera just to try it and I might be onto something here.

I tried Sinbad again with no ball or decal specified in the editor - still the same crappy ball.

Then I loaded the big shiny ball in the thread above and it still shows exactly the same darn crap ball. Now why in the world is mine not changing?
