Looks really great!  I ordered (from Mr. Pinball off of eBay) on September 16 some Theatre of Magic cabinet decals that are coming from Australia.  The seller doesn't provide shipping information or tracking, so I have no idea when it will make it to Iowa, USA, but I wonder how his process compares to what you did?

I'll let Mark know for you. Now it's time to study up on the best application method.

When using regular vinyls I always favoured the "slightly" soapy water technique myself. (But that was just applying computer cut lettering to our rescue boats though. I've not done my cab yet as you know)

I used the slightly soapy water in a spray bottle and a soft edged scraper method - worked perfectly ... twice now.  IMHO the most important thing is a well prepared surface, smooth and sealed.

Best of luck.

Thanks fellas, I've seen a bloke who restores actual pinballs in Townsville do a demo video on youtube. I do like his wet method.

Sanding next weekend, I have to go to away for work this weekend. Itching to get it done.

So, I wasn't really that impressed with something I saw in Stuzza's thread but mimicry is a form of flattery so what can you do. I suppose we will all have cross over ideas from time to time, but my artwork isn't even on the cab yet, guess I best hurry up.

Annnnnnnyway, the back is still not right but I managed to snd the back box ready for primer and cut button/flipper holes into the cab. I've sanded the cab a bit but its Bathurst Sunday (Australians know what that is), so I downed tools at race time.

As you can see from the pics I have three buttons on the left, straight down. I toyed with the idea of borrowing DDH69's configuration and having 2 above a third button. In retrospect I wish I had. I think this way the way I have it now will interfere with my artwork a little. Not much, but I'll notice it more than anyone else.

Heres the latest progress.

For the first time in my life, I've not turned Bathurst on. :(

Re holes... "Polyfilla"!

I had a blowout when cutting the hole for my coin door. I polyfilled it, sanded and even filed a curved corner into it. It's held perfectly and can't be seen under my paint. Under a wrap it will most definite be invisible if you sand it back with the rest of the cab surface.

In your case. I would cut wooden circles to plug the holes and glue them in. Then just use the poly as a surface filler.

I'm just say'n.... if it's not what you really want, now is the time to fix it :)

You're right Rusty, I am concerned that the lowest button will just eat into the horns of one of the front characters.

Like I said, not by much but it may. I have plenty of off cuts and although I used a spade bit to do the holes I have hole saw bits too and could carve out a 25mm plug, fill and you'd never know.

Maybe. Off to Vegas (of the Bris variety) for work in a few hours. Just a overnighter and back late night tomorrow.

Plug, fill, sand, swear, fill, sand, swear, paint, sand, swear, paint, sand, apply decals, love the result and be happy forever.

In short, if you want to change it do it now and be happy in the long-term.

BTW - how can you be going out - Bathurst isn't over yet?

I'll get the front decal and see how it sits prior to plugging, if my measurements are right I may lose 5-7mm of the top horns. Enough to bother me and no one else. If it does I will go at it again. I can always start again, rookie errors. Measure 48000 times, cut once.

I just did a mock up of the front and using paper did a stencil of it. I placed this on the artwork and yes I will lose a bit of the horns but not on its head, just on the horns on the Deathclaws back. At the moment I can live with it, but I will sit on it for a few days to see if I want to change my mind. I'm even thinking of just a two button setup on the left, with maybe a coin underneath. Undecided. Any pro's and cons to this???

I've downloaded some more VPX tables and since my back is hurting, I'm going to relax and play a few new ones today. My timeframe of 6 weeks to stage 1 completion (playable without any extras) is certainly creeping up on me. We go away for weeks over christmas so if its not done by then it will be late January.

Big shout out to my old MAME cabinet. It generously donated the old iPac Four to this project and some wiring.

iPac 4

I also started the repair on the lowest button hole. I am really unsure as to what to do here now. I want to have 1 player (as per pic) and Escape below it. I was thinking of adding a microswitch to the faux coin door to the coin return button. Having played a few Future Pinball tables I also want to have an A button for the centre button like on ACDC etc. Not sure where to locate that or how I can accomodate it.

Button repair

I bought some black paint & primer today from our national dying hardware chain Masters. $50 a litre down to $30. Some sanding to do but it won't be this weekend as its my 25th school reunion. I'm going to party like its 1991.

You could make the bottom button the iPac shift button and assign a second key to the top.

So push the bottom for coin, push the top for player 1 (start). Push and hold the bottom while you push the top for ESC ....just an idea ;)

Also, have you got magnasave buttons on the side? These come in handy for menu operation in PBX and could be used for the Fire/Punch-It buttons in tables without magnasave. (StarTrek VPX Punch-It is mapped to a magnasave from memory)

I mounted microswitches behind the two coin return buttons on my coin door.  They come in handy sometimes.  I like to have plenty of buttons without looking cluttered.
