yes, I know SS is not the hardest game in the world in real life. Probably part of the reason why it was so popular as it is very accessible for the casual player. I just tweaked the flippers and slope a little bit and it's a bit more challenging now. I guess simple things like that are something people can adjust. We'll have it set on a fairly forgiving level but hardcore fans can tweak it to their tastes.

I just wanted you to know that I'm finished with the script and the table is playable. Actually it is quite finished, maybe it needs some tweaking here and there
. Now it is up to highrise to finish the backdrop with the spider and wheel and I'll join everything together. There is a new wip picture on my site if you want to take a look.

That looks really beautiful JP! Am I safe to assume that you will be releasing a 4:3 and FS version at the same time?

I have finished most of the lights on the backglass, and JP is going to put them into the table. so now I just need to make the Spider. It's going to be quite interesting to see if we can pull off our 'piece de resistance' with the spider haha. If we do, it will be like nothing you've seen before! I've really enjoyed this, I feel like I'm contributing to one of the best recreations in SS and best Originals in Wallace and Gromit. I have just been playing Scared Stiff and I have to say, it has a real 'wow' factor. It's even better than Elvira and the Party Monsters haha. I think with this we have done something that hasn't been done in an angle independent table and I'm sure it will be a lot of fun.
Here is a sneak of some of the lights i have finished.

sweet lights! also love the bone flippers! how did you get them to work? i thought it was impossible to set images onto the flippers like that, but, of course you guys are the coder gods so i guess with you anything is possible

ok, here is an almost complete backglass shot, just needs a bit more cleaning up. For the spider i decided to add more lighting and shadow to make it stand out. In the end I cheated a bit with the shadow in the animation, but I think it looks ok. It's a 48 frame animation and in the process I discovered that you still can't have reels greater than 1024 x 1024. I didn't want to lose all that detail and since this is for VP9 I've made a set of six overlapping reels. What the more technically minded of you will notice is that if you compare it to the original, the lights are not in the same place or even the same size. I had to remove them and draw the backglass underneath to allow me to put the spider in. I could have probably used overlapping reels here as well but it would have been a pretty complicated and messy business haha. I think you will all be very happy with the level of detail anyway.

That looks AWESOME!! Just curious though, unless I missed the explanation how will this be implemented on the 4:3 table?

The way we are going to make it in the 4:3 version is like this: (highrise and I are still finding out the best way to do it, but for now the idea is this one):
The table will be angle independent with only reels used for the backdrop.
In the normal 4:3 table there will have 2 wheels, or two sets with rotating spiders and lights. One will be the default one, small and in the right corner of the screen. The other set will be player switchable, so if you want to see the full spider in all its glory and at full screen you'll need to press a key (for now it is the cursor "up" key). Then the whole screen will be covered by the backdrop with the spider and lights at full size. Releasing the key the playfield will be visible again.
At the begining the idea was that the backdrop should pop up when the spider moves, covering the whole screen. But the idea is not very practical, since sometimes the spider and lights moves when there is a ball in play, so it may hide the playfield.

ah, JP, you spoiled the surpise
Still, I think people will still be pretty surprised at it haha. I am pretty confident we can get it working, even though I had to find a way of breaking the 1024 x 1024 limit that would normally prevent you from doing such a detailed animation. The spider now uses six overlapping reels, and the trick is to make frame zero transparent. This allowed me to join the six reels together and make them behave like a single reel.
