Thanks for the play-by-play WIP update, Flupper! I always love your how-it's-made posts. So much fun to read. Beautiful pictures as always.

Agree with Ben. It is always fun to see how a master is doing his magic.

From now on. I won't help anyone here at VPF. Please ask Noah why that is.

It always blows me away at how complex some of these processes are.

You've perfected your process beautifully.

Should mention cpu over video card when it comes to render times, 3d rendering is almost all cpu, it literally uses 100% of your cpu power.

@Dark: with Blender Cycles and also E-cycles, rendering is much faster on the GPU compared to CPU (I have i7 7700k btw). Cycles uses cuda and can nowadays even use optix / RTX (which does not help me, since I do not have a RTX GPU like a 2080Ti). Only in some scenes CPU can be faster, for instance when the scene uses more memory then my GPU can handle. Or when you have access to a render farm with a lot of CPUs, then it can make sense to render on cpu.

If you look on this site: https://opendata.blender.org/
You can find that depending on the scene, my 1080Ti is 3-4 times as fast as my 7700k (and I think that is with regular Blender cycles, not e-cycles).

Only the most expensive CPUs are comparable to a 2080 Ti and cost 3 times more (AMD 3990x).

That looks absolutely perfect. Blender sure has come a long way, very impressive if I do say so myself. The lighting, 3d models and materials are spot on.

I was not aware blender had gpu rendering.  In my case I run a threadripper so it would be faster than rendering with gpu even if that were an option to me in max.  The 2020 version of max is going to be have Arnold renderer come standard which supports gpu rendering, however the 2020 version is supposedly still riddled with bugs.

Yea I dabbled in the 2020 version a bit and it did in fact have a couple issues but it wasn't a deal breaker. (except for the fact that it wouldn't save files lol) The new tools it has and materials/render engine are impressive though.

Hi Flupper.

This project looks absolutely amazing and has been on the top of my watch list. Just checking in, as this thread has been quiet for a while.  Would love to hear how things are going if you have the opportunity. Thanks!

I can only do a small update for now. Reason being that I spent a lot of time on updating my dome flashers and the example table for it and subsequently helping a couple of people getting them working in their table (starship troopers, the clash, aerosmith). Also I have been working on F-14 Tomcat on request of Wrd1972 a lot for new wireramps (rendered with Blender Octane), my new flashers, the new inserts I have made for Whirlwind and more. And lined up are some ramp rendered primitives on request of Cyberpez for King Kong. Some shots of Whirlwind with my latest additions (I remade the screws and finally got the bumper top lighting to look right):

Ridiculous is a hard word to write, but, no way near describing how good this looks. Thanks you so much for not only creating Whirlwind, but, helping out to get new techniques to the community. That is to me, maybe even more valuable, than what I know is going to be another epic release from you. Can't thank you enough.

Thanks for doing so much work for the community, flupper! Been seeing your name on lots of projects as contributor as usual. Exciting to learn you’re collaborating with Wrd1972 on F-14!

And believe me you will like wrd1972's F-14 :) It's going to be fantastic.

Flupper1 my face lifted off, your table will be again total perfection.

I've a question, not about Whirlwind, but about the name of a band I read in your post #75, Aerosmith

Is it the Aerosmith from Stern ?
