i played today in the UK London & South East League
there were four machines in the league play - Twilight Zone, Grand Prix, Cactus Canyon and Medieval Madness, Yes, i know, the owner is one lucky guy. He also had a WhiteWater that was playing up, and a Black Knight 2000.
I had a decent game on Cactus with 25M, a good game on Grand Prix with 28M, a superb game on TZ with 670M, and a total fuckup on MM with only 2M (damn it. i scored 70M in practise earlier, isn't that always the way?). I think without the MM ballsup i woulda come about 4th out of 15 players, but including it i was only about 10th. Bah!
i think i'm an average player but slowly improving, getting the hang of catches, passes and nudges. Currently UK #53, world #983

Best sound i ever heard was on the new Bally SS machines, playin 4 players in a comp back in the early 80's, was about 12yo.
Got a high score in the comp, and all 4 players matched on 00.
Heads turned from everywhere when they heard 7 cracks in a row.
Love that sound, steel on steel, crack.

i was a very high level when i was young in the 90's.
i always get the highest scores in all pinball i've play. I remember the highest score on Mary Shelly Frankenstein: i've obtaind 99,999,999 and i musted stop to play 'cause the scores won't goes up anymore!
i always remember over 300,000,000 on badcat's and 4 or 5 time "lost in the zone" at TZ.
i really loved "Road Show" whit 3 time complete tour!
Another great record was on Whirlwind that i remember was a very fast and "killer" game!
Now i'm playng the great Last action Hero at the bar near home: no-one can beat me!

"Compassion hurts. When you feel connected to everything, you also feel responsible for everything. And you cannot turn away. Your destiny is bound with the destinies of others. You must either learn to carry the Universe or be crushed by it. You must grow strong enough to love the world, yet empty enough to sit down at the same table with its worst horrors." - Andrew Boyd

While no hi-score specifics I can remember....
I've been taking part in monthly pinball tournaments lately. The last tourney I didn't win the trophy, but I ended up in the finals. I lost to the regulars that normally win the monthly trophy. So I'm getting better. One "round" was me & 3 others on one game(not the finals), I out-scored everyone in Fun House. Felt a sense of accomplishment in that.
In the pre-qualifying part of the tournament, I vary between 10th place(out of 20 people) & 17th(out of 24 people). The more recent games like Avatar, Iron Man, etc I get the lowest scores by far.

My son and I love pinball tournaments.
We have won first place and third place in the parent child tournament in Dallas on different years.
We are not always able to make the trip every year, but we always have a ton of fun.
Also the Houston area tourney is coming up soon.
Here is the link I just got in one of my emails from the group about the show.

I totally disagree with earlier comments stating that EM play requires less strategy. Every machine can have a bad bounce or an unlucky ball. The thing with an EM is that you need to have a specific strategy for each machine. And you need much more ball control because there is less to accidentally hit. You need to make each shot count. Every time you hit that flipper button, it should be a planned, and expected event. Of course it doesn't always happen that way. Point is, just keeping the ball in play is not enough to get a killer score on many EM's.
The other thing people tend to forget is that every machine out there was designed with ONE purpose in mind: TO TAKE YOUR MONEY. They are designed to draw you in, make you think you will have a high score game, and then kick your ass, thus allowing you to feed it coin, after coin, after coin. Tell me many EM's don't succeed in that.
That being said:
I voted that my abilities were mediocre, getting better, with a ton of practice. I have 2 EM's (Old Chicago & Flying Turns) and 1 SS (Flash). I work on or play them at the very least, several hours each week. They do not sit covered in dust in the garage or back room. But I have no one else that is really into pinball to compare myself against. I have the house high scores on all three. But does that mean I am great? I have beaten the world record for Old Chicago and my high score on Flash would be 5th in the world, if you could submit scores from home machines.
Honestly, I like a long play over a high score. For that reason, Flying Turns get's played the least. That machine requires both skill and luck (as anyone knows from playing rascal's VP9 version). You need to know just how much you can nudge because a tilt ends your game, and a nudge can mean the difference between a crappy score and high score.

I think I'm getting better slowly, in the online & offline world.
Recent examples:
Played Transformers for about 5 games, and somehow achieved a replay on the 6th.
Played Williams Pinball Classics - FunHouse - 4 credits. Did over 20 million on on the first ball. Finished one player with 28 million. The next player finished at about 26 million, but after bonuses, leapfrogged to 30 million.
Williams Classics - No Good Gofers. Somehow got a crazy score of 46 million, getting past hole 10 to the putting challenge.

next year, and for the first time, i will be playing in the BELGIAN PINBALL CHAMPIONSHIP > than i will have a real idea of my skill...
quite sure its not as "cool" as playing home without any stress
well, i was quite sure to have posted here since that...
and than i finished 24 in 2010 for my first try (i really had to learn a minimum of tactics while qualifying)
and runner up in 2011...
this added to some tournaments, i now entered the belgian top 20 ranking with the highest effective percentage, and my son will now play with adults...
than, i suppose, we aren't too bad ... !? bah, the more important remain the simple pleasure of the game, even if competeting feel something different

I'm thinking you'll get a large percentage of people answering "high" for skill level. "Mediocre" is just one of those words that people try not to associate themselves with. "Average" would work better... In my case, I play by sense of smell. Right now my nose is plugged. I'm sticking with "high" for my answer.
