You should check out JP's real life picture... Look for it in the Gallery of pinball people. ;-)

Best Regards,
Todd.

thanks - the spider is actually not that clear on the real table, it's the fact that it's in three dimensions that helps you to see it so I've tried to help that by adding some backlighting and shadow which hopefully helps it stand out.

well, the glass is dark because then the lights will be easier to see, and glasses usually are dark. The trick is trying to make the spider that bit lighter without it looking unrealistic. Truth is, it's actually a question of contrast more than brightness.

Highrise,
A friend of mine has this machine. I play it sometimes. The backglass when the machine is on is well lit with a greenish tons in the backglass (very bright). So for this I thought your picture is a little dark... for the backglass. But, to put this image on the backdrop (it was placed on your WIP table... it was perfect! tup.gif). I think the backdrop has to draw less attention than the table.
And your spider is perfect too! tup.gif Beautiful job!
Congrats!

This version of Scared Stiff is definitely getting the "Presidential Suite" treatment!!

yes, I'll brighten up the TV a little. Also I noticed that just to the upper right of the TV the lightning is a bit stained. I'll see if I can clean that up as well.

And yes, I'm deliberately making the glass fairly dark, for a number of reasons - firstly, it's in 2D, not like seeing a real 3D backglass, so I've used lighting to give it a more three dimensional feel, thus Elvira should 'feel' like she is slightly in front of the monster behind, as in the real thing as she is a decal. Secondly, you can't get the same level of lighting effects from VP as real life, so it's better to create something with higher contrast - this means the spider lights will look a lot brighter. In theory, I could also add backglass lighting effects like we did on Elvira but it's quite a lot of work and the spider (the other reason for the dark glass) is the real priority. I am going to use a 48 frame animation, which should hopefully make the spider spin fairly smoothly. It's more work but I think it will be worth it.

hi guys

here is a test for the spider. Please note that this is just a gif to demo it, it will be faster than this in VP, and I am just testing a couple of things out to see how smooth it is. I think it's not bad, in terms of smoothness. However, what you can see is that in rotating the spider 48 times, the image degrades so that by the time it gets round to image 47, there is a noticeable loss in quality. Therefore when I make the final one I will do it in sets of 12 or 8 to minimise this effect.

Basically I'm describing the process I am going through for your interest as I know some of you guys like to see how these things are done. I also haven't put shadow in to this, but I will on the final one. What I have found the best way is to try different things out before you commit to the final method, different colours and shapes respond differently to various tricks and techniques.

hey guys

I just got to play JP's Beta version of Scared Stiff, it's not complete but let me tell you, I actually laughed out loud at just how good it is, it might be just about the best thing I have ever played on VP! Certainly it is easier than the real thing but I don't think that detracts from it - the main thing is that our primary objective is definitely achieved - it is hugely fun. Should be with you all in a couple of weeks I'd say.

Cool, sound good HR and having played a brand new out of box Scared Stiff many years ago I can tell you it's not really a very hard game to beat in real life either.
