OK, so today I got the little mDP to HDMI adapter from Amazon.  Plugged it in, set the mini output to 3840x2160 @ 60Hz, and... the lag is still terrible.  No matter what I tried, it's impossible to get rid of the lag, which is considerable (close to 700-800ms).  The games are unplayable.

I then tried to see what happens if I set the display (game) window to 1920x1080, while leaving the rest of the system at 4K.  I was able to play the game with no lag in a 1920x1080 window.  So this tells me it's not the TV.  There's no lag between the PC and the TV, it's the CPU/GPU.  It just doesn't have enough power to drive the game at 4K without introducing input lag.

Well that was a fun experiment.  I will just have to live with 1080p, until I get a better PC.

In the VPX Graphics settings, have you tried turning vsync on or off and see if that makes any difference to lag at 4k? Perhaps also try setting the pre-rendered frames to either 0 , 1 or 2 and see if that has any effect.

Might also be worth selecting "set for low end PC" and see how that goes.

Yes, did all that.  It got slightly better when I set it to low end PC, but still unplayable.  I already have the vsync set to 60Hz, but I did also try "0".  I disable other features, but no matter what it still didn't help.  Nah, I can live with 1080p.

I mean 4K is nice and all that, and if I ever feel the need for eye candy I can always just enable it and just look around, but for playing I'll just drop to 1080p

What frame rate are you actually getting in 4K on average? Press F11 in game to check.

What video card are you using?
If it is one that will struggle running VPX @4k, you may try running VPX at 2K
2160x1440

I am also curious, what FPS were you seeing at 4K?
When you have all the other video settings at their lowest?

As I mentioned before, this is an Intel NUC MiniPC with a Core i5-6260U.  The GPU is the Intel Iris 540 Graphics.  It's no nVidia, but it's not all that bad either.  In benchmarks it performs similarly to an AMD RX Vega 6. or the older Geforce GTX 260.

https://gpu.userbenc...60/m37386vs3160

Now for the FPS:

1080p 2D, default settings 87.6 fps (avg.)

1080p 3D, default settings 82.1 fps (avg.)  The 3D mode setting is enabled.  Toggling the 3D effect on or of  with F10 doesn't change the frame rate average

4K 2D, default settings, 4K desktop , 1080p table window, 55.6 fps (avg.)

4K 3D, default settings, 4K desktop , 1080p table window, 51.1 fps (avg.), 3D mode setting is enabled.

4K 2D, default settings, 4K table window, 12.6fps (avg.)

4K 3D, default settings, 4K table window, 9.1fps (avg.)

4K 2D, Low-End PC settings, 4K table window, 18.1fps (avg.)

No speed burner here.

I think you found the source of the flipper lag.

Since you can get 80 out of 1080p, see if you can get 60 or better out of 2K?

Yeah, like I said, the GPU is OK for 1080p, but it doesn't have enough harrumph for 4K.

The only thing that I can fit inside the box that MIGHT give me enough power might be the Iris XE graphics of the 11th Gen processors.  Compared to the i5-6260U, the i5-1135G7 is twice as fast, has 4 core 8 threads compared to 21/4, has 8MB cache compared to 4MB, and it has Iris Xe graphics which is 150% faster than the Iris 540 and about the same as the Geforce GTX 750 Ti.

The problem is I don't want to spend $500+ for a system only to find out it's not going to fix this problem, so for now, I can just live with 1080p. I mean a year ago I didn't have a 4K TV and I survived.  I'm sure I can survive this too :good:

1920x1080 is 2K, if  you're referring to something like 2560x1440 (2.5K), there is no option for that resolution.  The closest thing is 2560x1600, which is a 16:10 aspect ratio, and gives me black bars on the sides.  Not really interested in that oddball resolution, but just to see what happens I tried it, and it averages 64.9fps

No option? hmm perhaps the LCD will not do 2K or at least does not announce that it can
What is the make/model of the display?

I will look and see if it is possible.
The NUC itself can do it, but it may not believe it can send it to the screen due to the EDID info being given or something.

You could try making a custom resolution in the intel graphics command center?

1. Open the Intel GFX settings.

2. Select Options and Support:

3. Choose your display under the Select Option pull down:

4. Take a screenshot of the Supported Modes (please scroll to the bottom to see the max resolutions).

I'm done with this.  I've already disconnected the rig from my living room TV, and it's back in my playroom connected the the Vizio.

If and when I ever upgrade the PC, I might try this again, but in the meantime I'll be sticking with 1080p.

Thanks to everyone who chimed in.
