this is a really enjoyable table.... super detailed... looks and plays great

Kiwi

I was wondering why your not using an environment map? or a gradient look up?

I think that the gradient color is a personal choice or a kind of setting to improve vision in its own screen or TV.
To me it seems strange to see this table, that I have redrawn, with different colors.

Environment map?

The table as the ramps is initially built with VP9, and in VP9 ramps are displayed well,
VPX requires more detailed objects, Environment Emission highlights the edges and reduces the roundness of the ramps.
One day I will surely see again to redo the ramps with edges more rounded.

Edit: can it be that even the Rodney model needs improvement.

Thanks for the nice comments.

this is what the table looks like in my cab... in no way am i say this looks better.... but this is how i set it up for me....
using an environment and a standard gradient

my question was for understanding builders different theories on the subject...

@skpManiac

I have no idea, I don't have a cabinet, I hope that those who know this stuff gives you a help.

@hauntfreaks

Like all things, it takes time to learn, the first time that I have tried the Environment map ramps did not look good, as the picture that you have attached above, are not smooth, you see the triangles, and for that I I have not used it.

I'm working again on ramps, and are now better than before.
Now I have to figure out how to make it look right the clear ramp.
What image do you have used for the Environment?

The Gottlieb logo is part of wildman's Surf N' Safari directb2s. Your screenres.txt DMD settings need to be adjusted to fit your dmd area correctly.  It should look like this

can you point out the triangles??

these are a few I use.... in the screenshot its the overhead_vpx.hdr (IMO creates good contrast)

Thanks man, now I try the new Environment images.

Even if the picture you attached is small, I I know what to look for and where to look.

My choice was the same, I've blurred a bit the image.
Has a good contrast on the metal parts, that's why I asked you what image you used.

Triangles showing up as a result of environment map is a result of either too low of a face count, poor geometry or a lack of smooth groups.

In this case I'm going to guess from the pics it's mostly a lack of smooth groups.

What I've been doing is applying a turbosmooth modifier which ends up smoothing everything nicely but then I end up with too many faces and have to optimise it before I can use for VP.  Or if I want to keep the mesh lower poly I add smoothing groups to rounded edges manually.  The main problem with using turbosmooth (or whatever the smoothing modifier is called in blender) is you can't have any triangles in your mesh as this will cause distortion, same goes for NGon's, it need's good edge flow with all quad faces.  Of course all quad faces get triangulated when brought into VP but smoothing modifiers generally don't work well with triangulated mesh, so I always try to keep mesh's in quads until I need a version for VP.

I have rounded edges (first was only an edge at 45 degrees), the walls of the ramps are smooth, and above it is flat, converted the triangles into square, optimized count of polygons, find ways that would prevent me to remap the ramp, all done manually.

For the next project I know where to start and how to proceed.

I have to check the table with the new pc and then release the update.

Hmmm, but every other table plays fine, and it looks like there is a proper DMD running behind the logo, I can see a few pixels of it ?

Thanks for your time :)

hi maniac, this game does not have a DMD. it only has the alphanumeric displays on the backglass screen.

if you want to disable th egottlieb logo, right click on the main backglass when it is running. change the B2S DMD option to hidden and click save. gottlieb logo should then no longer appear.

once it is gone you should see that there is no DMD.

you can decide to keep it off, or make it visible again.

like gtxjoe said, your logo settings need to be adjusted so it appears properly.

screenres.txt is in you tables folder folder.

the settings to look for should be something like this.

1920
1080
1280
720
3
0
0
775
290
1295
90
0

i believe the last 5 lines are the ones that need to be played with.

YOUR values will have to be slightly different for your screens and dmd window..

its trial and error, until you get it correct..

once you get it straightened out, it looks great on MANY other tables.

i have even customized many of my own... they are worth it///sparky

For finding out the location of DMD on a larger screen, you can use a little program like Cursor Position ( google ) it will display cursor coordinates in pixels so you can pop them in the screenres.txt and accurately get the dmd positioned.

PS, this table rocks ! Thanks Kiwi for your awesome work.

Cheers,

al.
