Doing a really mint job on this man, sucks about the clear coat, I almost did the same on my cabinet, however I did a small spray to test and it did exactly what yours did so I didn't actually have the problem of it destroying my work so I was lucky!

Hmmm. I think the problem was that the paint wasn't dry enough and/or thick enough when I sprayed the clear coat. Seeing as though a have surplus of spray paint, clear coat, and stripper, I'm going to give it another shot. The only problem is that it seems to rain every time I want to spray. :throw:

You need to go with very light coats and gradually build up the clear unless you let the basecoat cure for a couple of weeks (or you wait until mama's gone out and bake it in the oven but the next batch of muffins to come out of it would probably kill you).

Once you get a couple of light coats on and dry, then you can go with a heavier finish coat.  Rattle can paint is great but has little to no catalyst in it so it takes forever to cure. A heavy coat of clear eats right into it (as you've found out).

Interesting build to follow so far :dblthumb:

She's on her feet.. But there's still a long way to go...

I also finally found an acceptable playfield monitor on craigslist for $140. It's a 37" Vizio that comes out of standby mode with the power button held down!!! :) This, obviously, is a huge relief.

I still have some painting left to do and a few software issues. I've also been considering adding a nudge button as the balls on future pinball tables tend to get stuck. And I still need to order some LED stuffs from ZEB. Steve has been a great help and has withstood several months of my questions. The guy is a trooper!

All in all, I'm getting closer!

Do you think a hair dryer would help? I read that a heat gun is too hot.

On a separate but similar note, I was seriously considering getting vinyl graphics on the cab itself, but decided against it. There are too many small imperfections on the cabinet and the corners aren't great. It would require a complete sanding and even more bondo'ing. At this point, even with a fresh coat of black paint, you can still tell that the cabinet has some age. And I kinda like it like that. However, I must say, the stuff that stuzza has been releasing is top notch.

Setup one of those halogen worklights to radiate the heat over the surface and that will do it, they put out enough heat to help the curing.

Ahhhh, i can almost smell the bondo ....... cool you're gonna keep the graphics, yeah Gorgar is awesome.

Maybe you can 'gore' it up a bit later on with some additional artwork....reading that the wife is aboard too...

More pics please !

Yea the wife is on board lol. Oddly enough, she keeps pushing for more obnoxiously large arcades and pinballs. She wants a shooting arcade next! Unfortunately, I have to put my foot down after this given that I still have other unfinished projects sucking up space. I have a bad habit of completing projects about 85% of the way and then moving onto the next.

Awesome project.  Good on you for giving it a try, at some point you may wish you had just bought some wood and started from scratch but I bet you will be happy when it all turns out great at the end!

Yea, I already do wish that I just built one from scratch. I'm currently sketching out the plans to cut out access doors in back of the cabinet and backbox. But at the end of the day, I'm saving a bunch of time just modifying this cabinet.

when will you be finish ?

I have a couple weeks off between xmas and new years. I'm going to power through as much of this as possible.

With that said, I still have the software to deal with and I'm extremely anal with how my front ends look. So who knows.

In retrospect, I'm not saving any time :/

Great to see your build, I have a complete gutted Gorgar I had been planning on converting and reading your build inspired me to start the project. I see you went with a 37" playfield, I am trying to go 39". Look forward to seeing more.

I was looking on craigslist for either a 37" or 39" 1080p hdtv... but it also had to power on out of standby mode with the power button pressed in.. a 37" happen to be the winner... Sometimes you just have to go with what you can.. and since I only paid $140, I'm not looking back!

On a different note, I swapped around my game room (aka living room) and now I have a room for the vpin once it's up and running!!!

Yea, the spot in the middle is for the virtual pin once it's up and running. I should be finished with the painting soon though. The detail around the skulls has been tedious and it's been making me want to procrastinate. It would have been far easier to sand it all down completely and fix the corners up to put vinyl graphics on. But I wanted the pin to maintain some of its retro look.

Once everything is in place, I will begin working on the LED stuffs and the bezels. As time goes on, i'll continue adding new tables and what not. I need to finish my racing mame cab first though.

Haha no. The flippers still move together. I keep it around because it's a good size for my 5 year old and the flipper situation actually works out well for her... I plan on turning it into a coffee table one day.
