You can use the compatability mode of NT 4.0 Service Pack 5 if you have to. I am running XP myself and don't have to use it, but it depends upon the system you have. I recall several years ago on an old P3 I had I had to use Windows 98 compatability mode to run VP efficiently, but since I've upgraded several times since then I don't need compatability mode.

Bottom line, if you can get it to work using NT 4.0 Service Pack 5 compatability mode, use it.

The NT 4.0 Compatibility mode setting is mostly for VP-Man and to solve the problem that the DMD may be hidden behind the playfield - at least on my computer. If VP works well w/o it, leave it, otherwise: it won't hurt...
I changed the Installation Guide to make the two steps (run as admin, compatibility mode) more clear.
Thanks for the feedback!

Stuck on "from the open window copy just the chosen VpinMAME.dll file to the VPinMAME subfolder in your VP folder. Overwrite the file by the same name. This updates your installation to the latest VPM version."

I don't recall doing this step before, or maybe I did it incorrectly. I am at the address C:\Program Files\Visual Pinball\Tables\vpinmame_23.zip I see the VPinMAME.dll at this address, but I do not know what to do with it. I right clicked it to get the copy command, but when I click copy, nothing happens.

The address C:\Program Files\Visual Pinball\VPinMame does have a VPinMAME.dll, but its Date Modified is 2/1/2009, so I think it is the older one that I don't want.

Thank you,
Dennis

Vpinmame doesn't go in your tables folder.

I guess if you used an installer, there might be a VPinMame folder in your Visual Pinball folder, but not your table's folder.

What you would need to do is just click on the dll in the zip file and extract it to where your current VPinMAME dll resides. In my installation it was at C:\Program Files\Pinball but your installation would obviously be different than mine. Or you can extract the entire zip file to another directory and copy over the dll from that directory to where the VPinMAME dll resides. It is your choice as to how to update that dll.

Yes, what a mess I made! smile.gif

But I am so determined to figure this out that I will keep going until I have lost my mind.

I do have a C:\Program Files\Visual Pinball\VPinMame

I also have C:\Program Files\Visual Pinball\VPinMame\vpinmame_23 At this address, I have the VPinMAME.dll

Do you think this is where VPinMAME.dll belongs?

This may seem goofy, but I also have C:\Program Files\Visual Pinball\vpinmame_23

Thanks,
Dennis

In normal setups, the dll should be in the same directory as your Visual Pinball exe. In your case it should be in C:/Program Files/Visual Pinball (if I understand your directory structure).

As an example, here is a pic of my standard Visual Pinball directory structure and file listing in the Pinball directory:

You will see there that both Visual Pinball exes (VP8 is designated as VPinball8.1.exe and VP9 is designated as VPinball.exe) are in that directory along with the VPinMAME.dll file.

I still have vip and it has visual pinball, vpinmame and vp-man all in same dir.

I think for vp-man i could choose location, but visual pinball and vpinmame got installed automatically in same dir.

So in one dir I have vpinball.exe, vpinmame.dll, vplauncher (not used), vpman (not used), and directories artwork, backups, cfg, ..., hi, ini, nvram, roms, music, wave and so on.

I copied the VPinMAME.dll to the C:/Program Files/Visual Pinball

My C:/Program Files/Visual Pinball has VPinball.exe, VPinball_9_0_2.exe, and VPinball912.exe, but it does not have VPinball8.1.exe I found this to be strange becase I thought VP Installer 1.0.3 automatically installs the Visual Pinball 8.1 exe file in the VP folder and a link to it on the desktop.

In fact, I could not find VPinball8.1.exe anywhere on my C drive

Should I run the VP Installer 1.0.3 again, or is there a faster way to download and put VPinball8.1.exe in C:/Program Files/Visual Pinball?

Thanks,
Dennis

I don't think your pinmame setup should be in your main directory like that.
I have my pinmame folder in the main directory, where my tables folder is. Then of course the pinmame related files are all in their own pinmame folder this way. I think this is the proper setup anyways.

To get VP 8.1, simply download the exe right here from the "essential files" section.

rob046 is right, you can download it from the essential files section.

Or, if you wish, here is the link to where you can download the exe only:

http://www.vpforums....u...l&f_id=4564

Although, now that I look at what you listed, the VPinball.exe that you have IS Visual Pinball 8.1. I had renamed my version of 8.1 to that (my apologies I should have told you that). So, you really don't need to download it again. Just rename the VPinball.exe you have now to VPinball8.1.exe (or sometthing else if you wish) and then rename VPinball912.exe to VPinball.exe.

Trying a new direction now. I now have access to www.pinballnirvana.com

3click is installed into C:\Program Files C:\Program Files\Pinball created

vpinmame_23.zip in C:\Program Files\Pinball What do I do with vpinmame_23.zip? Extract only the VpinMAME.dll and put it where? Once the necessary files are extracted from vpinmame_23.zip, do I then delete vpinmame_23.zip from C:\Program Files\Pinball?

Thanks,

just checking.
are you using pinmame or the vip(visual install pack)3click?
might be better to use the 3 click at www.pinballnirvana.com.
all the folders are in the 3 click.
use the browse to install the 3click into C/Programfiles.

for 2.3pinmame use the browse to overwrite the old 2.1 pinmame to C/programfiles/pinball.
the pinmame configs are true to the 3click.

use the browse to install the vp8/vp9 desktop execs to C/program files/pinball.
after installing right click on the ball.
send to desktop.
this is your shortcut.

go into the forum.
open visual pinball.
type installing.
look for installing vp8.1/vp905/907.
it works for all vp8/vp9 desktop execs..

Actually, all you would need to extract is the VPinMAME.dll to upgrade to VPinMAME 2.3. You would extract the VPinMAME.dll to your C:\Prigram Files\Pinball folder. After that is done, you can delete the zip file if you want.

To verify if you did that correctly, run the setup.exe that is located in the C:\Program Files\Pinball folder and check to see which version of vpinmame is being recognized.

Considering in the installation guide it is documented to only extract the dll file instead of extracting the whole thing, I would disagree with you. It is much easier to extract only one file than the whole thing. Even newbs can figure that out.

>>Actually, all you would need to extract is the VPinMAME.dll to upgrade to VPinMAME 2.3. You would extract the VPinMAME.dll to your C:\Prigram Files\Pinball folder. After that is done, you can delete the zip file if you want.

To verify if you did that correctly, run the setup.exe that is located in the C:\Program Files\Pinball folder and check to see which version of vpinmame is being recognized.>>>>>>

the instructions i posted in #56 might be easier for the newb's.

Considering in the installation guide it is documented to only extract the dll file instead of extracting the whole thing, I would disagree with you. It is much easier to extract only one file than the whole thing. Even newbs can figure that out.

TA,
you have to remember that some may not be as computer savy like some of you.
it was just as easy to overwrite the entire file with the browse.
