I was already loving FlexDMD, then I discovered the PinballY DMD mod. That's awesome! I love the animations and not having to worry about capturing my DMD or filling the screen for PBY when the table had no DMD.

One issue I'm having is with some tables with long names. If it's too long, it spills off the screen. Is there any way for me to adjust the font size so my table names will fit on the DMD?

Can you reference the PinballY DMD mod you refer to please?

@Sevex, this is a FlexDMD bug (it searchs for the file at the previous location, and crash while not finding it instead of reporting the missing file). Sorry for that. I will work a fixed version asap.

For the mean time, copying the FlexDMD files where you installed it previously should fix the problem (you copy them at that location, then you run FlexDMDUI.exe at the new location and install to the new location).

Thanks for the clean report, it really helps understanding !

Regards,

   Vincent

@JLPicard001, the PinballY mod is provided with the release, in the script folder (PinballY sub folder ; it contains a script to be put in your pinbally script folder)

@vbousquet, Thank you for the answer.  I've copied the files in the previous folder but the problem continues the same.

I'll wait for the fix.

Thank you very much for you great work!

EDIT- Solved! I've tried in the wrong folder. Now it works again. Thank you again!

The exe runs fine. My issue is it won't register

need more details on what you mean by wont register then

When I run FLEXUI.exe when I click register in the second box from the top, the cursor spins for a second and it remains with a red checkmark. The above box has both checkmarks green, it's installed in the VPINMAME folder as well.

did some poking looking to see where it may have stored locational info

found nothing in appdata, not even isolated storage

So looked in registry for flexdmdUI, only found muicache, no importance there

so looked for flexUDMD.dll

Found the following reg paths and sub keys

I am wondering if deleting the parent key
For each of the existences would reset it?

I do not know if everyone's CLSID would be the same? but you could do a reg search like i did

and try removing the parent level key for each existence found?

I did a sort of test, with out deleting my working setup

i put a copy of flexdmd in c:\pinball\test

i ran flexdmdui, it ran fine

now i went into c:\pinball\vpx\vpinmame and i renamed flexdmd.dll and flexudmd.dll to

1flexdmd.dll and 1flexudmd.dll

then i went back to the test folder and ran flexdmdui again, and it did not run even though it had it's own copies of the dlls

so removing those reg keys might reset it

If the CLSID's are the same for all of us then one could use this bat file

purge flexdmd.bat
rem removing flexUdmd.dll from registry
reg delete HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{E1612654-304A-4E07-A236-EB64D6D4F511} /f
reg delete HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\WOW6432Node\CLSID\{E1612654-304A-4E07-A236-EB64D6D4F511} /f
reg delete HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{E1612654-304A-4E07-A236-EB64D6D4F511} /f
reg delete HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\WOW6432Node\CLSID\{E1612654-304A-4E07-A236-EB64D6D4F511} /f
reg delete HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\Classes\CLSID\{E1612654-304A-4E07-A236-EB64D6D4F511} /f

Just a bump to see if anyone has a suggestion on how to handle long table names. I'd rather not resort to abbreviating them if there's a way to make the font a little smaller instead.

I do not think UltraDMD, which is the API the script is using, has a font size option, not directly anyways, for UltraDMD, it seems to be a function of the scene type

but you might try editing the pinballY script and changing

udmd.DisplayScene00("FlexDMD.Resources.dmds.black.png", name, 15, subname, 15, 0, 5000, 8);

to

udmd.ScrollingCredits ("FlexDMD.Resources.dmds.black.png", name|subname, 15, 10, 5000, 14);

the scrolling credits uses all small font for all lines as opposed to scene which uses big fonts for the 2nd line

or maybe trying to use the scoreboard function?

udmd.SetScoreboardBackgroundImage ("FlexDMD.Resources.dmds.black.png", 15, 15);
udmd.DisplayScoreboard (1, 2, name, 0, 0, 0, subname, "");

Thanks for looking into that! I am going to run that batch file this weekend and see if I can get Flex to register. I will let you know!

If my registry keys are not there or not the same, how do I check the .DLL file for the info?

you dont check the DLL file for anything

you check the registry, like i did above

search the registry for flexdmd.dll, see if you hit the same exact keys i listed

it's a CLSID so it is most likely the same, but since i did not write flexDMD i can not swear to that entirely

I just compared to 2 laptops
desktop and 2 laptops have same CLSID's

so bat file should be good for anyone to run

With the first option (scrolling credits) the table name was replaced with a small circle that animated up from the bottom of the DMD.

The other option (scoreboard) deemed to break the script entirely. Not sure if I put it in the right place. I commented out the DisplayScene line and replaced it with your two suggested lines.

I'll have to rename my tables I guess. Would love it if we had a way to scale the text. FX3's "Star Wars  Calrissian Chronicles" is an example of one that doesn't fit. I could cut off Star Wars, but I like that those tables all end up together. My other option is to do some sort of abbreviation.

I doubt you put it in the wrong place, probably something that i do not have right in the syntax to pass the table name info over

Vbousquet would probably know right off what i did wrong

I am not up on my java scripting, so i do not know how it breaks the table name into the 2 parts
doesnt star wars show up on the top line with Calrissian Chronicles showing up on the 2nd line in larger text?

Might ask him if there is a way to do something different and display a per table image or animation?
Then you could make nifty DMD images or animations for tables and have something really custom come up.

Do these things play just when browsing in pinballY, or when actually playing?

Though that appears to be a Future Pinball table, so my next idea is of no use anyways

For a VPX table that does not use the DMD, i can program a custom DMD into the table and have it do literally anything i want.

I suppose one could do the same in a FP table with futureDMD
but that would not do jack squat forin pinballY itself, only when playing the table

If you feel the need to empty your wallet in my direction, i don't have any way to receive it anyways

The whole point of FlexDMDUI is to avoid having to mess with the windows registry which is always a bit risky. The register/unregister buttons will set up / clean up these key automatically for you. So, if possible, I would recommend to simply use it to avoid problems.

@vbousquet, Thank you for the answer.  I've copied the files in the previous folder but the problem continues the same.

I'll wait for the fix.

Thank you very much for you great work!

EDIT- Solved! I've tried in the wrong folder. Now it works again. Thank you again!

The neverending story. Now that I have FlexDMD registered none of the tables with UltraDMD (Diablo, Iron Maiden, Kiss...) show the DMD. I've reinstalled UltraDMD (in XDMD folder) and, now, I can´t even open UltraDMD.exe.

I'm completely lost. Any idea?

Thanks in advance

The whole point of FlexDMDUI is to avoid having to mess with the windows registry which is always a bit risky. The register/unregister buttons will set up / clean up these key automatically for you. So, if possible, I would recommend to simply use it to avoid problems.

They can not use it, some of them anyways.

They put in in the wrong folder, realized that, put it in the right folder, deleted the old, but had already set it up

Now it either does not like the recreated folder, or they are not remembering the folder name 100% exactly
and so can not run it to uninstall it and then move it to the right place because it wont open.

Yea, i know, they should have read the instructions, but the horse already escaped the barn, so trying to help them put it back in.
If you have a better fix, i'd be happier to have them use it instead of playing registry rape, but that is all i could find for them.

@vbousquet, Thank you for the answer.  I've copied the files in the previous folder but the problem continues the same.

I'll wait for the fix.

Thank you very much for you great work!

1) Uninstall ultraDMD (it should have an uninstaller?)

personally i got rid if the XDMD folder entirely, got tired of that copy of dmddevice.ini getting read for strange reasons and interfering with the real one in the pinmame folder

2) run flexDMDUI and unregister it for both it and ultraDMD

Now, are you still running flexDMD from some location besides the VPinMAME folder?
Look what FlexDMD says for the installed folder?

If it does not say visual pinball\VPinMAME\ (or what ever your path the the VPinMAME folder is)

Change the installed path, and point it into the VPinMAME folder, now exit FlexDMDUI

Then, make sure you have Freezy's 1.8 DMD extensions INSIDE the VPinMAME folder

dmdext-v1.8.0-x86.zip

dmdext-v1.8.0-x64.zip
Unzip both of those into the VPinMAME folder, yea you wont use the 64bit one any time soon, but it will eliminate a red mark in flexdmdUI

Ok now, move FlexDMDUI.exe FlexDMDU.dll and FlexDMD.dll into the VPinMAME folder
Ok now everybody is in the place that they belong
Now run FlexDMDUI again, register flexDMD and register UltraDMD
Now. click on the FLexDMD designer tab and the UltraDMD designer tab

You should get 2 different DMD displays showing up

If you see nothing, try renaming your dmddevice.ini
Yes, your DMD will be butt ugly and sitting on your playfield screen, but it will tell you if you have an issue with the ini
and ini's are fixable

If you still see nothing
these do require net framework to be up to date, and visual C++ runtimes installed

think freezys requires either VC++ 2019 or 2017
Here is an all in one installer package for VC++ runtimes
it will install/update all of them.

If you still see nothing then, i'd have to think some more
outside of trying the registry purge i had listed above

@wiesshund, thank you very much for your help!

One doubt: In step 1, I must uninstall UltraDMD, Ok. But, Must I reinstall it in another folder in this moment or later?

I did all the steps carefully and nothing happens. My only concern is about the moment of reinstalling UltraDMD

Thanks in advance

EDIT: I've reinstalled UltraDMD in Visual Pinball/UltraDMD folder and all works again...but when I register UltraDMD in Flex DMD it disappear again!, and if I unregister it I have the next error: activex component can't create object ultradmd.dmd object!

If I reinstall UltraDMD again it works again and so on.

It's crazy! Any idea?

Thanks in advance

@wiesshund, thanks for trying! Yes the dmd for Calrissian Chronicles has Star Wars in small text on the first line. The second line spills off on both sides.

It's an FX3 table, by the way. But it happens on any table with a long name regardless of platform. "Al's Garage Band Goes on World Tour" is another example. It's a VPX table. There are more, I had 5 or 6 (out of 250) I had to rename or abbreviate.

I also noticed the script doesn't like special characters like & or |. It ignores anything in parentheses, which is helpful in a few cases. For the example above I can set the name to "Al's Garage Band (Goes On World Tour)" and Al's Garage Band is all that shows in the DMD.

Anyway, this is a really cool feature of FlexDMD. If any future development is done, it'd be awesome if it could handle long table names a little bit better.

Thanks for all your help and work!

I tried the bat file and it did nothing. I searched the registry and the only thing in there that is Flex related is FlexDMDUI at:

Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\MuiCache

I never was able to register Flex and it has always been in the proper folder so it's not that I moved it. It just will not register on my computer. I don't know what can be causing it because I have plenty of other software registered. No anti virus, no files blocked
