Good timing considering I just ordered a new speaker panel as well, LOL.

BTW I clicked on you table link for 4 Horsemen are you going to revisit this for VP 9 at some point?  My brother-in-law would lose his mind over this as he is a huge 4 horsemen fan (who isn't).  He actually used the Flair (2001) theme music at his wedding when he and his wife were "presented" to all of us.  There were a ton of woooos from the crowd and lots of 4 fingers in the air.  It was fantastic (his wife wanted to kill him of course)

LMAO! I LOVE it!I wish I had been at a wedding like that!

I've noticed a lot of people already have a PinDMD, so I'm releasing the kit with what I currently have available. I hope you're one of those that do, because the initial kit will not include the PinDMD, as they are not expected to be back in stock until April 2014.

Yeah the reception was a massive party.  Best part was it was about an hour and half away from home at a hotel that the bride's father rented out and we didn't have to drive home.  I think the party broke up around 3am but continued in my room as we carried the leftover keg from the banquet room across the parking lot to our room and kept it going.  The next day (or few hours later) when we had to go home was just brutal but it was a hell of good time.

Nope I am in the "don't have a pinDMD group" so I have to wait (just so this is the annoying TZ cabinet guy :wink)

Woooooo!!!

I need help!

I have the following: Cherry DMD, Zebbulon High Voltage Driver Board, 80v/100v Transformer from Virtuapin.net, PC PS with the 12v/G/G/5V connector, pinDMDv2

Now ... I Installed PinDMDv2 drivers and modified .dll required, the device is recognized in windows, led flashing, all seem ok. Then I connect the Transformer and PC to the Zeb HV Board, ... nothing to notified me if is on or everything is ok, no led or anything in the board, ok.

Then I connect the 7pin cable to the DMd, DMD stay off ... what gives? What is wrong???

I'm not the expert on this, but I haven't read that Cherry is confirmed to work with PinDMD so you are breaking new ground!

Cherry is not currently manufactured as far as I know, so it is probably used. Can you confirm from personal experience that it is a functioning unit?

Do you have a fuse connected to your mains ground as illustrated in the wiring diagram in this thread? Is it blown?

I've found that it is quite possible with molex connectors from Pinball Life to connect the power lines to the DMD backwards! From personal experience, I can tell you it will blow a fuse. Did you connect the power lines backwards?

Do you have a multimeter to confirm that the voltage supplies from the high voltage board are correct? Can you confirm that the voltages from the transformer are correct?

I brouth it from ebay (as working), and I don't have a real Pinball to ful test it. :(

No i didn't connect a fuse in the main. I don't think they are backwards, the High Voltage and PinDMd was sold directly from Russell with the 7 pin connector. I just made the Transformer molex conector to the HV Board.

Yes, I have a multimeter, From the picture where do I connect the leds in the 4pin Transformer molex connector? From red to yellow and from blue to violet?

Thanks for your help.

I can send the DMD to someone that can confirm it is working. I know Russ told me that it isn't 100% sure pinDMD works with Cherry DMDs but he told me I can send it back if not, or he can help me troubleshooting!

Then right now there may be no way to tell if the DMD is non-functioning or if it is simply not compatible with the PinDMD.

But if you have a multimeter then you could at least eliminate the transformer and the high voltage driver board as the cause of the failure.

Also did you check for blown fuses?

Again not the expert, but maybe it is possible that the setup is working but the image brightness is very dim or zero? This can be adjusted with a config utility available at the PinDMD driver library.

Testing with the multimiter, nothing connected:

Pin #1: -118.7 vdc

Pin #2: -98.2 vdc

Pin #3: KEY

Pin #4: GND

Pin #5: GND

Pin #6: 5.12 vdc

Pin #7: 12.14 vdc

Pin #8: 62.8 vdc

Connected with a 500mA fuse in BLACK hot wire, it din't blew. All seem alright?

Yes, both fuses of the board are OK, and the one I connect still ok :)

One question, if the DMD is NOT compatible and I connect the "7pin" that give it power.... it dosn't suppose to start/turn on at least? Even if it isn't connected to the PinDMD?

http://www.vpforums....e=1#entry213502

According to this diagram the high voltage inputs should be -125V for pin #1 and -113V.for pin #2. The difference should be 12V regardless.

It's been a few months since I put a display set-up together for test purposes so I don't recall the tolerances for a typical cheapie multimeter. Pin #2, at least, seems too low to me. And that may be the problem. I successfully used a piggyDMD from Pinball Life and it produced the expected voltages.

I do have a Zeb high voltage board but it is packed away somewhere. I should test it out, but it may take me a few days to get to it.

Is transformer producing 100VAC (blue/purple)?

I think they are that weird because it isn't connected to anything? I started re-reading all the posts from this thread, and found that you need to adjust the shader settings.... where do I find that? I don't have any "pinDMD program" .. I just used the intallation guide for Windwos 8, installed the drivers and replace the vpinmame.dll ...

Where do I see/modify those setings?

I'm scare to connect the DMD again just to test under load at the DMD pins... do you think is safe to connect and test?

tested blue/purple = 104.7 vac

Ok, I said, fk it and connect it again, only this time I did it in this order. Connected all the plugs into the HV Board, started the PC PS, connect the DMD to the 7 pin, then connect the pinDMd to the DMD and then I connected the Transformer to the AC power, then I connected the PinDMD usb to the PC. Saw this:

sooo..... this means it isn't compatible or the refresh rate is too high or something, because it is flashing  and waving like a equalizer bar in a radio, up and down and flickering. I need the God hand help of Russ ... where are you my frienddddddd!!! :)

I didn't tested the leads behind the DMD itself .. I took the picture of the pinDMD logo, then started the test of Vpinmame and run a test with the Addams Family, showing the 00 and took the picture, then disconnect the power from the transformer, just to not damage anything if this is stressing the DMD or anything. :(

Thanks a lot CArny, we are getting closer? :) Hope I can use this DMD if not, it goes back to the market.

The first picture is the center of the PinDMD splash screen. And the image around the center appears to be dim with the image fading farther away from the center. I think the DMD must be connected correctly then if you are seeing these images.

Maybe try to leave it powered a few minutes longer and see if you are able to resolve more of the image as the DMD warms up. If so, the good news would be that you will have demonstrated that the PinDMD is compatible with Cherry manufactured DMDs. The bad news would be that this particular unit is outgassed and is essentially non-functional. Prolonged use might be hard on the high voltage board.

Again not an expert at all on this. I'm just relaying what I have read elsewhere.

Some of this research seems to say that the Vishay units that are compatible draw high voltages about 5V higher than other manufacturers like Cherry.  But I don't know personally. The WPC specs seems to indicate that units from both Vishay and Cherry were used interchangeably. After all I only see one kind of DMD driver board replacement.

Are you in the United States?

I'm in Puerto Rico, "yes" associated with USA. Well .... the seller is a good friend of mine now, I will contact him but, the pictures he posted show that it was working (just had 5 horizontal lines missing, the first 5 lines) ... I manage to "fix it" just need to fully test it. It was that the ribbon was a little loose and the trays were not making good contact.

Well ... it appears to be working as you say. Yes I know about the outgass DMDs but in the pictures it was showing bright as hell. Let me see if I can find the original auction post.

It's just blinking and not showing anything beyond the center and  few corners, blinking and waving like crazy. Maybe outgassed already? Damaged? Not fully powered? pinDMD incompatibility? Refresh rate to high or too low?

I have read before that Russ need to adjust the refresh rate on some DMDs to make it work....

:(

edit: auction have expired and can't retrieve the pictures.

Yes, I believe the connections are correct for you to see the images you uploaded. The next step would be testing the DMD in a real machine somehow. Do you have any connections to local collectors?

If not, then this option is a dead end, I think. You may wind up having to spend more money or wait some indeterminate amount of time just to find out for sure if it is defective or simply not compatible with the PinDMD or the other components in your build. Even if you could confirm that the unit was not defective then you might need to ship it to russdx in order for him to figure out the driver/software adjustments needed for compatibility. Might as well return it and see if you can source a known compatible make and model like a Vishay.

Pinball Life has some brand new in the box right now at a good price:

http://www.pinballli...&parent=18&pg=1

Seller has a great reputation.

Ebay is a bit of a gamble. It might be possible to find another fixer upper at a bargain. But you don't really know if a unit is repairable until you spend your money and get it in your hands. I bought a couple of used Vishay plasmas for $20 each, shipped. Both "worked" in my test set-up although with missing lines. One might be repaired with a lot of work. The other I don't think can be repaired. I wound up acquiring a third one, mint condition, on Ebay from a virtual pin builder who had decided to go with an LED solution and was selling off the plasma he had just bought. I saved some money versus new in box but it was by no means a steal.

I will see what I can do before spending $200 more in this project. Just to try all the options.

maybe randr know more about this? I think he is an expert in this area and have build tons of pins.

I'm no expert but zebs power board is very nice I've used a few and are as good as the piggy repair board. I would try another dmd or try your dmd in another machine. If that's not possible maybe try and update firmware of pindmd but I don't think that will help..but couldn't hurt. May be hardware incompatibility with dmd

Hi randr! Thanks for the recommendations, I don't have another machine to test it. How can I update the firmware? What do I need? thanks!!

I think I got it, the other pdf AN004 talk about upgrading firmware
