Best Regards,
Todd.

p.s. I'd love to run an arcade and fill it with indestructible arcade/pinball machines from 1980 thru 1989... /sigh, those were golden years

1. Robotron 2084 (love how you have to play the game angry to get far in it!)
2. Wardner (was a challenge but managed to beat the game every time after the first)
3. Mat Mania (know how to play the game forever)
4. Bubbles
5. Tron (loved the cabinet design)
6. R-Type (had very interesting elements to it and kept you on your toes)
7. Midnight Express (was pretty good at it, but still was a hard game)
8. Moon Patrol
9. Mr. Do (a hard but fun game that was kind of like Dig Dug)
10. Vanguard (a hard game but the first one that I remember that had an end boss in it(can't remember if it came out before Sinistar))

QUOTE (kristian @ Mar 25 2010, 10:12 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
1. Gravitar (Atari) Simply the best arcade game ever with incredible depth. 100% skill and tactics,
2. Xevious (Namco) Mother of all 1st person shooter games. Still haven't completed this... I've gotten to the last area... but one day I will.
3. Star Wars (Atari) (I actually played over 30 million in the arcade version. This game screams playability and requires actual pilot skills. It's much, much harder without the yoke but I've managed to play 2.9 mil with the mouse.)
4. Stargate (Williams) I prefer this over the original Defender.
5. Space Duel (This what Asteroids Deluxe should have been. 4 cool modes... I prefer the linked ship)
6. Tempest (Atari) I doubt this requires any explanation.
7. Empire Strikes Back (Atari) Hugely underrated sequel. Very addictive. Includes a similar buy-in that Tempest has... it's not actually buy-in but you need skills to advance in later levels.)
8. Pole Position (Namco) This is the only game of the mentioned that really shows its age.... but it's still the first ever decent driving arcade game. I remember how amazing it was when it first came out... the whole arcade just stared in in awe. Those were the days...
9. Space Ace (Cinematronics) Maybe not a great game but it deserves mention because it was actually a decent interactive adventure... MUCH better than Dragon's Lair actually... without those annoying black screen clicks... and back then this laserdisc system was sci-fi. I think DL and Space Ace were revolutionary because they put 2000's graphics to a 80's technology. Not sure if this is fully emulated in MAME though... but I have the original DVDs.
10.Raiden Fighters (Seibu Kaihatsu) This is probably the best modern shooter series... I absolutely love it... fast, furious... like Xevious on steroids.

Honorable mentions:

Track & Field, Battlezone, Defender, Robotron, Asteroids, Marble Madness, Bomb Jack, Mr Do, Mr Do's Castle, Zookeeper, Phozon, Puzzle Bobble, Money Puzzle Enchanger, Bal Cube, Indiana Jones, Galaga, Major Havoc, Quantum, I Robot, Black Widow, Centipede, Missile Command.

Xevious was a FIRST person shooter?

I liked all the games that were the transition from black and white to colour, as well as the games that were non linear in movement ie: Galaxian unlike Space Invaders.
I noticed that no one mentioned "Elevator action"
Who remembers when space invaders had strips of clear colours placed in front of a black and white monitor, to try and get a few more playing months out of them.
Who remembers using gas igniters on the machines to get free credits?

Most of these games in everybodys top list I haven't played before because I haven't downloaded every MAME rom. Almost impossible over 8000 roms no way I can download that many games in my lifetime.

But I will defiently take notice of games in everybodys list and download them someday because I could be missing out on some very very classic games.

1. Defender
2. Defender
3. Defender
4...

True classic. Most people that will try it out without having learnt it once will
not play for many minutes i guess. Cause its hard to learn, but a great great feeling to play
when you master the flow of the game. It plays rather well on a keyboard compared to
the cabinett buttons. But as i said a beginner would have to be patient.
Cause it have to be played with buttons, dont use a joystick that will spoil it completly.
Very good sound effects. The hole program on i around incredible 3-4kb programmed
by legend Eugine Jarvis. Who also made the masterpiece Robotron.

I played both of those at the 7-11 near my high school every morning before homeroom. Mad Planets would drive you mad, but Juno First was rather easy to get the concept of. Juno First kind of reminded me of a top-scrolling Defender of sorts.

CarnEvil is one of those MAME games that require the .chd file.
