QUOTE (BFG Brutal @ Aug 31 2010, 04:31 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Hey Rawd just wondering how well your system works? i'm building a similar setup...AMD Athlon 2 x2 3.0ghz, 2 gb ram, 500 gb HD, 250gts 1gb OC gpu and win xp. Just wondering if you have any playback issues stuttering etc. "m only running a dual monitor setup..24" playfield and a 20" backglass/dmd.... all off the 1 card. thanks!

You should be good to go man. I have a few minor stuttering issues with some tables if I run UVP, so I just leave those with a static backglass, and 99% of the tables run fine. I get a hair of stutter on Monster Bash multiball with the High res textures, and I had a problem with Cirqus Voltaire at first, but I have that problem solved and it runs smooth now (not sure what I did.. I think I turned off ball anti-alias).

Since I posted my specs, I went from Vista to XP, with minor improvement (mostly in FP)

Hi Rawd.
I looked at your cool youtubevideo. Just a little curious, where do you cabguys
get these seem to look nice playing fs versions from??
Just to mentention one, your video shows a clipp of a Class of 1812 looking like
JPs vp8version but there is no FS or vp9 version here on forum?

650 sli powersupply

asus nvidia based sli mobo

core 2 duo e8400 cpu

2x 2gb ocz ddr2 1066 ram

samsung 1tb 7200 rpm hard drive

geforce gtx465 1gb video card

wireless nic, win xp

The one thing I have left to buy is a video card to run the backglass and dmd, I have heard from some people who use an older card like a gt9800 and others who swear you must use a new faster card for both or your gameplay will suffer.

I also ordered a 28" hanspree monitor for the art screen, I have seen some cabs using that one, if it is too small or a bad fit I will get rid of it and go with the 32" lcd 1080p tv.

From what I've seen on this forum I honesty believe most peoples stuttering or low frame rates are CPU bound and not cause of lack of video power. There's not much going on other than high res textures and a few polys in vp. Hell its a dx7 app. But it does tend to get very CPU intensive when things like multi ball is going on some tables. Just casue some people think Cause they have a quad core they will be fine that's not true Cause it only makes use of two cores and thats only if you set affinity to do so. A faster clocked dual core would serve people best in VP. Ok I'm done with my rant lol.

Never said it wouldn't run fine on a quad. I'm talking about people with stuttering issues thinking they need to run out and buy a gtx 485. Check for yourself, its single threaded.

Let me correct myself. Seems vp8 is single threaded and vp9 is dual threaded making use of two cores ... Also seems for some tables a preaty beefy card is needed. Monsterbash ect.. Still probably a mid range card will do.. Might put a HD 5770 or 5830 in instead of the 4670 is was thinking of.

Guess my rant was crap lol. Overclocked my processor to 3.75 and took my HD 5770 out of my main computer and I still get stuttering on monster bash! Something is not right, ready to pull my hair out. If i get a gtx 250 and it will make it run smooth then screw it I'm getting one. And maybe a athlon II x4... unless you guys think its cause of CPU cache?

Notes:

I use SetAffinity II in windows to assign VP, Hyperpin, and UltraVP to different processor cores.
All unneeded Windows services like Autoupdate and Indexing are turned off.
With this setup, I get no stuttering and maybe a tiny bit of slowdown during multiball when every light on the table is flashing simultaneously (Simpsons Pinball Party). 99% of the time it is smooth as glass.

I found that all of my slowdown and stuttering was related to CPU and memory. I am using an old 9600GT card with 512MB RAM running at 1080p resolution and it has no problems at all. What I found is that VP needs as much CPU and memory bandwidth as you can possibly throw at it. Since VP is single threaded, overall speed is more important than # of cores. Example...I was originally running VP with an Athlon 64 X2 processor at 2.8 Ghz with 800Mhz DDR2 memory. At the time, I didn't realize that more cores wouldn't help me so I bought an Athlon II X4 running at 2.8Ghz (more internal cache and better architecture than the old processor) and a new motherboard with 1066Mhz DDR3 memory. Performance only got marginally better. I found out about the "single threadedness" (is that a word? Haha) so I went for speed. Got a Phenom II X2 processor running at 3.2Ghz (and 6MB of level 3 cache). Performance got much better. I then overclocked the processor to 3.7Ghz. Almost perfect performance! So then I bought 1333Mhz memory and now VP runs smooth as glass 99.9% of the time. (The exception is a few tables during multiball when VPMame is crushing the processor with a billion lights cycling simultaneously.)

Another consideration might be OS setup or driver issues. If Windows is doing stupid stuff like indexing in the background or a crappy sound driver is having problems sharing an IRQ, it can definitely impact any CPU intensive process like VP.

Thanks Brian. I think I will grab a am3 mobo and some ddr3 1600. I'm only going to be running 2 monitors so I think I will stick with one card. If my 4850 512 don't cut it I'm probably going to grab a 250...

HI all my first post, been lurking for a while now and have been busy sourcing parts for a full size scratch cab build. Was gonna wait until i start the build to start posting but i felt compelled to reply to this thread.

This is what i will be using for my pc:

Intel Pentium Dual-Core G6950 2.80GHz (Socket LGA1156)

check here for some more insight into this little bargain speed demon.

http://www.bit-tech....50-cpu-review/1

It is widely reported to clock at 4 ghz + on standard air cooling and in the above review they easily hit 4.6ghz!
the cache is not very large so would want to pair it with some good speed memory.

from my limited experience with vp so far, it does seem a case of clock speed rather than number of cores to me. Much like this is the case with many games still.

might be worth your consideration.

Yea that's why I think I'm just going to stick with my athlon II X2. Its basically a Phenom II x2 without the l3 cache. Thinking of getting some ddr3 1800 to make up for the lower CPU cache.

This would be interested to see, Clock vs Cores... You can use programs like affinity to focus the cores. UVP i find takes a lot of CPU power to run and same with your front end. What i have and what ive seen is people setup..

Core1 - all windows programs and resource programs
Core2 - Just focuses on VP
Core3 -Just focuses on UVP
Core4 - - Backglass and Front emulation

So technically you can get all 4 cores to run separately, But there inst any benfit to hyperthread mode with VP. Or at least from what ive seen Clock speed does make a huge difference

Well I can either get a gtx 250, am3 mobo , and 4gb of ddr3 1800. Or get a gtx 250, and a quad core processor and just use my 4gb of ddr2 800 which overclocks too 1000 MHz. What do you guys think?

I Have a p4 3.6ghz. ht with 2g of ddrsdram at 533 mhz. I just put in a gt 220 and performance is better but not as good as I expected. Can I put in faster memory? Or is there anything else I can do? I'm not too computer savy so please keep it simple.

Did some testing last night. Tryed VP and monster bash on a computer with a Phenom II x2 550 black edition with the 6mb of l3 cache and it ran the same. I also installed XP 32bit on my soon to be pin cab hardware and that made little to no difference. So I watched my CPU usage and noticed when its stuttering both my cores are only at half load. Processor is at 50% load. So when I get cash I'm going to get a gts 250 or a gts 450. Even though my HD 4850 is a around the same overall performance .... hoping the whole nvidia runs VP better is true. Cause I don't appear to be CPU bound. Hell I even put my processor back to stock 3.0 ghz and my fps did not change. Hope one day VP gets a complete overhaul and makes use of today's hardware and technology. It really shouldn't take this much horse power to run this but its so dated it doesn't take advantage of today's hardware. Not trying to knock the work the VP team has done cause you guys have done a amazing job.

Does anyone know why FP doesn't support GTX... cards ?
