I specifically said, for people to have the option when creating tables, to be able to do that rather than creating muted roms

You arent making sense?
You already have the ability to do that, if that is what you wish to do

Make an altsound, everyone has the ability to do that

Yeah, I realize that, there are some fantastic tables that are done purely in VPX without emulation at all.  They're really impressive, but they seem to be few and far between compared to others is all I mean.

They aren't few and far between
Every original and every EM is made exactly like that, and there are almost more of those than a person could actually play

and there are a ton of totally script based SS tables that dont use the ROM.
Some because the ROM doesnt exist, some because the ROM isnt emulated (ie spike2), some because no documentation exists for the machine to wire the ROM to and some because the author wanted to change up the rules and modes.

And Every FP table is totally script operated, even though FP actually can use pinmame (dont ask how because i am not entirely sure on how to implement it)

There is enough stuff out there, that a person could almost make a table by literally doing mostly cut n paste code snippets

Heck, i would even go out on a limb to say it is probably a lot easier to script the entire table, than to try doing a rom based table on a machine that is almost totally undocumented

I like the CSV solution well enough, it has enough options, and I'm familiar with working with csv's from doing quite a bit of scripting in excel in VBA and all that, so I could probably write some code to adjust things with all of them very quickly.

There was an excel sheet for that, but i think it went down the toilet with vpinball.com? Shame the site went down the way it did, you cant even get your own contributions back, i asked if i could get copies of mine and got told no :(
Pretty sure that is where it was hosted
not sure if it is in web archive

I'm not really a big fan of the ones that are basically just reskins/mods of authentic tables generally

I am not either, so i dont have any, if it were not for the ACDC tables, i would have no need for the ROM alias function of VpinMAME

But, they are easy to do, and seem to be popular with a lot of people, so they make them

(10,000 versions of Sexy Girl redone as Xmas tables cant be wrong, right?)

I saw a Grease and an ABBA table that were reskinned Elvis tables
Not a fan of grease or abba, but having elvis talk in the middle of grease was amusing to watch.
Having elvis appear on the DMD while abba is playing is just kinda wierd.

Both tables could have taken a much better method, personally i would have hand scripted them.
but they could have killed both the ROM audio and the DMD and had PUP and table scripting handle that stuff and retained the ROM logic

Treehouse of Horrors, there is a custom ROM for, if you can find it
I dont know how they made it though, maybe using pinball browser? which you might look at, if you are using a supported ROM

Well, the majority that I've seen have been pretty much like you described later, just re-skins of other stuff with a bunch of photoshopped crap thrown on it.  No offense to the people that make those, I'm sure there's... a reason... somewhere.  I just never had any reason to play any of those.  There's a few that seem to be decently done, the night of the living dead one looked pretty neat.  Then again, I also haven't looked through the originals too extensively, because I sort of assumed they were all sort of crappy, but maybe I will now.

Ah, I'm late to the game on that one then.  That does suck.

The grease one I almost grabbed because my sister used to watch that movie on repeat non-stop, but, I thought better of it.  She can figure all this stuff out if she wants to play grease pinball.

Ah Pinball browser might be helpful/useful, I hadn't run across that yet, thanks.

I looked around for forever for the custom rom for it, but couldn't find it anywhere.  I almost asked on the youtube channel that I linked earlier, but it doesn't seem like he's responding.  I'll track it down eventually I imagine.  Do you know if there's a specific naming convention they use for muted roms?  Maybe throwing an m on the end of the name or something?

The ones i think that work best are the early SS and of course EM's

EM's are all script so doing sound is obvious

and the early SS have no DMD, so there is usually no styling etc, it is just a score
and the sounds are kind of trivial to just mute and script what you like as there are plenty of things to watch in the ROM for as triggers or modifiers

Lamps lit, objects hit, can even watch for the score and trigger sound based scores.

If you look at heavy metal, even if you dont like the table itself, all of that is being done over the top of the ROM

you could mute the ROM and never notice

Advanced warning, the script is pretty long and drawn out for a ROM based table

NOTLD is a good table, that is a good reskin

No, a modified ROM uses the same name as the non modified one
to use both, i would rename the modified one to like a lower revision's name
like is the rom was simparty5 i would make the modded one simparty4 maybe

pinmame wont accept random ROM names

The grease one I almost grabbed

dont, i did not find it terribly good, and it just kepts playing songs just for the sake of playing songs, no game play reason at all.
plus elvis kept talking, and if you muted elvis, he was still on the DMD

Then again, I also haven't looked through the originals too extensively, because I sort of assumed they were all sort of crappy, but maybe I will now.

go to originals downloads, then sort by downloads or popularity
We kind of need more categories perhaps

Do the same with VPX recreations
Recreations should be real but romless tables

You will find real tables in Originals because the author deviated, like JP did with writing his onw gameplay modes and logic for deadpool

as for original original tables, i might suggest looking at diablo, zelda, blade runner, dark crystal, pink floyd, star wars bounty hunter, unreal tournament 99, serious sam
just to get you started.

Between those, you will learn everything you need to know bout "I dun need no stinkin ROM"

Funny, I already had diablo, blade runner 2049, dark crystal, and UT99 lol  Thanks for the recommendations though, I'll check em out

Between those tables, you could probably learn most everything you wanted to know about not touching a ROM

You can start with a good physical table layout, redo all the art
throw out the script and write your own and kick the ROM to the curb
put in your own sounds
and put in your own DMD which can be as simple as just a scoreboard and words/phrases
or as complex as having color animations and naked pole dancers, you can even do text/scores over pre animated WMV or MP4 media that have the sound effects in the media itself for the particular DMD scene
or run the sounds from the table

IIRC you can use animated gifs as well.
