thats incredible, i figured they wouldn't even be around. Definitely a buy at that price if you own the table to have as spares. The fat guy seems to take the most punishment, it seems like his feet would get broken off?

Ok, does it work well on close ups of fat dude and toys to do panorama? Will do a bunch this weekend. Where do I send them? And for another stupid question, Do I take pics of playfield with machine on or off, or both

If you could post them on a file share site like:

https://mega.nz/

OR

https://www.dropbox.com/

Then people can grab them and start messing around on a redraw or experimenting with them..

I think that this program 3DF Zephyr Free is going to be a handy tool for people who don't have sculpting skills like me. I dove in with both feet without doing much research into this program and was able to make a half a dog sculpture I have here at home. See the attached images.

Now this was a quick job and I rotated the dog by hand. I would say if a lazy Susan (turntable) was used and the background and base were flat black to hide shadows, and a light pointed straight on the front of the subject or bounced as to not cause glare off the shiny plastic, this would give great results. Camera on a tripod. I took 36 images of the dog, but after masking the dog out on all of them, the program could was only able to get orientation on 18 of them ( the one side of the dog). Again I think this is because I was moving by hand with no proper center point. If it had a group of 50 pictures properly aligned with a turntable and a tripod, I think it would have turned out sweet.

It would make it an easy masking job if the background and base were a solid flat black. In the picture I included in the program you can see the blue camera points and they don't make a nice half circle, even they run off a bit, but the program was able to adjust anyway. So the turntable and the camera on a tripod would be the way.

So worrick69, do you think you can handle this? Putting fat dude on a turntable and getting like 50 shots in a circle with good lighting from the point of the camera. And if its simple enough, do the same with the dozer? Its a lot to ask.

If your into this type of thing, you can even try to make the models yourself with that free program.

That's pretty nice especially for first try! So was this composited with just forward facing shots?

If i locked the camera center and the lazy susan center would i just shoot from the front straight on? or would it be good to do a set of low, mid and high shots all while keeping center? this process is pretty slick, gunna have to experiment again! What other 3d tools are you using?

Edit: Did you try the unmasked photos? maybe it would be better to edit out the 3d noise after compiling it into 3d? What about a grided background and base I wonder if that would help the software do its magic...

Oh and it does have a video import and a panoramic import which you can use instead of a series of stills. I didn't try them. maybe the turntable in a video would work too, I don't know at this point.

Yes this was made with just forward facing shots, but I imagine forward and mid shots would be good too. to capture the top a little. Maybe just for a slight angle higher then the subject would be good. You got 50 shots to work with so I wouldn't break that up too much. The help file direction said to mask the images if you use a turntable, but the masking process would be a breeze if everything was black except for the subject. I had to hand outline mask the way I did it with no solid background and it took a while on 36 images. I only used this app and nothing else to export the obj file and a mtl and a single image texture. You have to choose a single image texture file when you export. I selected a checkbox for a normal map too, but I didn't see anything exported for that. But you can make a normal map using photoshop. I'm pretty happy with the results of my quick test and I'm happy I didn't have to jump through a bunch of different apps to get it into a format that VP can use. I did have to set the rotx to 180 and reduce the model size to like 40% scale across the board (x, y, and z size). I pretty much left the default setting in the app as it was, but I would play with the vert/poly count maybe too.

I did try the unmasked images once and it made a blob. That would be more for like a walk around shot of something or a drone aerial of a large area. With a turntable, you will want to mask, Because the background is not changing only the subject is turning on the turntable. I'm definitely no expert at this, so please have at it and let me know your findings. All in all, the program is well thought out and pretty full featured. I even edited the mesh in the program and deleted anomaly's in the mesh.

There is a video import and panoramic import feature too I saw. Maybe a video with a turntable would be good too. I didn't try those.

This 3DF Zephyr Free program is awesome. Here is my second attempt at making a model with it. You have to see this model in a VP table to appreciate it.

This time I cut the background out in photoshop before importing them into the 3DF Zephyr Free program. I still went with the masked method of setting up the images, but I only had to pick the background color on one image and have the program auto mask all the images from that color. I think this model turned out really great and was relatively easy to make. Check It out. Eagle.zip is the table, and I have the model rotating so you can see it from all around. This was made from 36 images and I turned the eagle manually again without a turntable. the blue marks in the program picture show where the camera positions were at around the object. The camera was my phone and it was set on a tripod.

Thats pretty dang slick! From what I have seen this program is the go to for photogrammetry. Even better then autodesk solution! If anyone is interested in learning about this process hers a link to a set of videos, this ones #2 but you get the idea:

I just got some black foam board and a lazy susan yesterday and going to experiment this weekend. Gotta start hitting the thrift shops again looking for some old toys to scan... things like Starship Troopers various bugs/ships and Godzilla 98

EDIT: No gunna lie.. but this has got me at half chub anyway.. but when I saw that eagle model ingame.. were talking FULL chub here folks... @Rascal that looks really good holy crap thats sooo f@#$ing cool!

Thanks, It really is pretty cool. You should probably get white and black mats, depending on what model. Maybe even green.

@Rascal - Roger that, I have white laying around too and almost got a few green but didn't. Seriously this is next level insanity. Taking pictures and getting textured 3D models out of them, its witchcraft I tell you! :)

It works really good. It's easy to set up too as far as the black boards. Heres my experiment before final mesh and texture extractions:

gallery_134000_433_343554.jpg

Ok I tested it out with black foam boards and keeping the centers of tripod and turn table as close as possible with my camera just facing forward. Did 50 pics and it was able to reconstruct all the pictures using this set up. I didn't do any masking just dumped the pics into the program.  Having a flat no gloss center stand would be good too but editing out the other data points is easy enough.

So @Rascal.. I have my .obj and texture how do I format it to work in VP? Any links to tutorials or if you have tips would be great.  This is amazing, I haven't looked into the pay version yet but hopefully its not insanely expensive..

Super easy to do. Easy enough that you could set up and take pictures at shows probably pretty easy too if need be.

Making toys with this process might not be as good as a talented 3D modeler could do but it gets you 95% there and in about 20 min.

Import the texture into image manager. Put a primitive on the table and in the properties of that primitive select import mesh. Pick your .obj file and click on the import button (stay with the default settings). It may take a while to import, and the system may seem locked up, but give it time. Then you can set the image that you imported to the image property in that primitive property too and select a material, I used "plastic with an image" as my material. I had to change the RotY setting to 180 for the model to show (otherwise it was on the underside of the table). I also had to change the xsize, ysize, and zsize because the model was too big. That's it, I added a timer and rotated the primitives ObjRotZ to make it spin. Look in the script at the end to see this.
