I had just the same problem after a very long break from VP / VPN. The right shift key can't be selected in preferences/keys in VP editor.

It seems to be "dead", but it works in other applications. The fix (link) posted above didn't help, as it isn't there anymore or I couldn't find.

However, after a long search I managed to find a solution anywhere else. I think it should be available here at VPForums, so here it is.

As far as I understood: Apparently various DX software selects "Microsoft eHome MCIR 109 Keyboard" and uses its keyboard mapping,

which is causing weird issues with \, =, Right Shift and other keys.

Don't use this solution, if you need the driver, as you use corresponding hardware! It's a permanent solution. Windows doesn't replace

it with "Microsoft eHome MCIR 109 Keyboard" at restart.

1.    Start "Device Manager"
2.    Open "Keyboards"
3.    Select "Microsoft eHome MCIR 109 Keyboard"
4.    Right-click "Update Driver Software"
5.    Select "Search for driver software on the computer"
6.    Select "From a list of device drivers on the computer"
7.    Select "HID-compliant device"
8.    Next (Updating driver)
9.    Close the window
10.  Close the Device Manager

Saved My Butt again, thanks...  Must have been the latest Win10 Update took my Right Flipper away...  Was going nuts, R-Shift worked in everything (Notepad, PinballX, Win), but just not VPX to VP9...

After six years playing VP on numerous PC's and OS's, I've suddenly been struck by the dreaded Dead Right Flipper described above. As other victims have noted, none of the usual, obvious remedies work, nor in my case does yogiholzer's because I don't have the "Microsoft eHome MCIR 109 Keyboard" driver to delete. It seems to have struck me right after the latest Windows 10 update, but rolling back the update didn't fix it. A Google search reveals that this issue has been around for at least ten years, but that even some of the hobby's experts seem unfamiliar with it when someone asks for help. Whatever the cause, it appears to strike only VP9 through VPX. Anyone have any ideas or am I forever doomed to have to assign the right flipper to another, less desirable key.

I think I’ve fixed the problem by repeatedly unplugging my keyboard devices and then deleting the drivers. It took a few tries.

This problem poped back up after a Win10 update, went to device manager and could only fix by deleting the "Microsoft eHome MCIR 109 Keyboard" and all was good...

Update...

After reboot it came back, so had to select "HID-compliant device", had to force it via the Update Drive button, Browse mycomputer for driver software, path=C:\Windows\System32\drivers, include subdirectories checked, let me pick from avaliable list of avaliable drivers from my computer...

Keyboard problem. (PLZ HELP!!!)

My keyboard's ~ or ` button wasn't working so I googled and I found this. (I was playing a game when my tilde button wasnt working.)
Go to 'Device Mananger' -> 'Keyboard' -> 'Microsoft eHome MCIR 109 Keyboard'
Right click it, and now you can either choose to 'uninstall' to simply make the tilde key works again in fallout 3, oblivion and other games that does not let you use ~ as console. However, If you feel discomforted uninstalling the driver, then there is other solution.
Right click it and instead of clicking 'uninstall', choose 'update driver software'
when new window pops up, choose 'browse my computer for driver software'
now when new stuff comes up, choose 'let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer'
several stuff comes up as a list. click on 'HID-compliant device' and click 'next' (or simply double click it)

(My keyboard isn't Microsoft eHome MCIR 109, Someone else had that problem so I just followed the steps)

I did all of that but my keyboard wasn't working so I checked the device manager. Usually the keyboard tab had Standard PS/2 Keyboard and my keyboard's name but after I did those step, my keyboard's name wasn't there.

I really want help. Thanks.

This does not seem related to VPX or Vpinball in general in any way, but

I would suggest that you go into device manager and uninstall all keyboard devices, and if given the option, click the box to uninstall software
this will mean removing a device that is probably only labeled HID device as well.
You can find which HID is the keyboard by disabling them one at a time until you find the generic HID device that stops you from typing, then uninstall that one.

Then shut the PC down, unplug the keyboard, boot it back up
Once it reaches the windows login screen, plug the keyboard back in and let it redetect the keyboard

and dont listen to people telling you to install wrong keyboard drivers etc

If you want a console in oblivion, enable it and use the keys oblivion uses

If you feel the need to empty your wallet in my direction, i don't have any way to receive it anyways

Spend it on Hookers and Blow

My keyboard is not one that plugs in. I did the suggested Device Manager driver update and was told I have the latest driver, but to no avail, still no right flipper using the R Shift Key

Old problem that seems to pop up after windows updates and other various keyboard configurations.

Was loading up a backup pc with VP, using the same wireless keyboard i use on my main system.  My wireless keyboard is configured properly with a HID Compliant driver, as did a KeyWiz USB Max board, crazy enough the right shift and a few other keys just did't work, tried each board indepenently, same issue.  Noticed a MCIR 109 Keyboard Driver in the deveice manager, but not associated to my keyboards with the issue, it was automatically installed on a clean windows 10 install for a PC built-in IR wireless keyboard port (not even used), so I unistalled it and all was good; of course, till I rebooted and it reassigned the driver, then issue back.  So this MCIR 109 driver can cause issues with other attached keyboards, even if it's not used.

Also, after updating your dirver confiration, ensure you restart VP (for some reason it must scan the keyboards/drivers and remember settings on startup and remember them until VP is restarted)...

Update:  Found no way to disable the driver, even checked BIOS to disable the IR, finially followed the IR Port plug back to the motherboard and unplugged and finially it's gone from the device manager forever...

Thank you all for your advice.  Alas, none of it worked.  I am having the same problem as Yogiholzer appeared to be having.  I don't have a Microsoft eHome MCIR 109 Keyboard, so his solution won't work for me.  I do have a Logitech keyboard driver.  However, I updated it, deleted any conflicting drivers, and retried VPX.  This didn't fix the problem.  Here are the other things I have done and some info on my PC.

1. Dell desktop PC (XPS 8960) is running Windows 11 and all drivers and software is fully updated.  The PC is new, so it has more than ample memory, a separate graphics card, and a current/fast CPU.

2. My PC is up-to-date with all Windows updates.

3. All other applications can correctly use the R-Shift key with no issues.

4. For no reason that I can think of, VPX was working perfectly fine.  And then one day about a month ago, when I went to play a simple table, the right flipper (R-Shift) stopped working.  All other keys used by VPX work fine.  BUT I NOW CANNOT USE VISUAL PINBALL WITHOUT A WORKING RIGHT FLIPPER.

Here is what I tried so far, with no success:

1. Verified in VPX Preferences that all keyboard keys were correctly assigned.  Right Flipper is correctly assigned to R-Shift key.

2. Uninstalled VPX7.2.  Restarted PC.  Reinstalled VPX7.2 full install.  Problem still exists.

3. Installed VPX7.3 minimal install.  Problem still exists.

4. Updated Keyboard driver for my Logitech keyboard. No luck.

5. Reverified that for all other applications, the R-Shift key is recognized.  This problem ONLY happens with VPX.

6. Swapped out Logitech keyboard with a different keyboard.  Checked proper driver was installed.  Different keyboard still didn't recognize R-Shift key in VPX but worked fine for several other applications I tried.

I am at a loss for other troubleshooting items to try.  Any and all ideas for fixing this annoying issue are GREATLY APPRECIATED!!!

Thank you.

Did you try assigning the right flipper to another key? What happens if you map it to a key like for example L?
Maybe the language keyboard scheme has changed, it can happen when pressing Alt+Shift, did you check that it's your usual scheme (in case you have more than 1)?

deadmanworking,

Thanks for the advice.  I did try to remap the key.  And that worked!!!

However, I really want to try to map it again to R-Shift.  When I tried that, pressing the R-Shift key did nothing.

Checking my language scheme, it is exactly what it should be ENG-US.  And the R-Shift key works with all other programs.  I even tried a different keyboard and the R-Shift key was working on all apps but not registering at all with VPX.

I will try jimmay3's advise to delete all Keyboard drivers from Device Manager.  Hopefully, this will work.

Truly appreciate everyone's advise and that this is not an isolated (albeit it is a rare) issue.
