I had a strange experience with this new render. Let me share it with you to see if anyone else has had a similar experience or if it's just all in my head.

I tried both the old and new render on my cab, an Ultrapin which has a 32" playfield screen. I'm 1.88m tall which means I tend to have a mostly overhead view of the playfield. The old render looked ok to me. It feels like most VP tables around here. The new render looked horribly stretched to me and try as I might I couldn't find any position that made it look "natural" to me.

Now, the really interesting thing... When I tried to take a picture of it, it looked absolutely amazing with great depth of field! If I looked at the playfield through the camera of my phone (which isn't even all that good) it always looked great except when I tried looking at it from more extreme angles (too high, too low).

After trying to figure it out for a while, I remembered I had experienced something very similar the only time I ever came across 3D chalk art on the street. When I looked at it, even from the right angle it didn't look all that great but if I looked at it from the camera or took a picture of it it always looked great. It was very similar to what I experienced with my cab.

Anyone noticed anything similar or is it just my imagination?

You are not alone.  I look at it and it seems stretched. I take a pic and, other than the time machine looking a little too tall, the stretch goes away.

The stranger thing is this: I spent quite a long time last night flicking back and forth between the two renderings and I'm starting to think that in the world of tradeoffs, I could live with the stretch version in exchange for the larger playfield.  It's mainly the face that don't look correct, to me.  I'd like to see the faces fattened up the top of the time machine lowered a bit.

Yes, that was what I was trying to show in the pics uploaded in the sitting and standing view. There is a real difference and this is already noticeable with a mini-cab so I guess for full size cabinets the effect will be even greater.

The playfield in the first render seems to cramped and the 2nd a bit too stretched if the view angle isn't low enough. The apron in the 2nd render is cut off too much, so maybe meet each other in the middle. Make the apron from the 2nd render a bit larger and then you can stretch a bit less (especially the faces). I personally like the 2nd render more because of the larger playfield. Looking forward to the 3rd render :)

I don't think it is possible to please everyone. We are not talking about real 3d. Trying to create 3D in 2D will always be an illusion and seeing the trick from another side or angle will reveal its secrets.. It is just how illusions work.

I'm still looking at these items.

I just got through playing some Timeshock on the desktop and all three angled table views shows the smaller apron just as what you see in the second render; The outlane guide comes all the way to the bottom of the desktop.

I also played some VP tables and aprons are all over the place. Some tables have  beefy aprons just like the first render and others have aprons that look like the second render.  While I have always noticed the differences in various VP table aprons, the difference has never bothered me while I am playing.

And on my real Bally table, I measured the distance from the back of the table to the lockdown bar as 41".  My minicab measures 25 1/5" to the lockdown bar. When I stand at the mini and back up to the 41" distance, the view does change quite a bit.

As you, I look forward to the 3rd render.  I'd like to see the second render with just a little bit of apron added. I'd like to see the apron placed where the back of the Shoot Again light sits.

As I continue to look at the stretch version, what strikes me the most, besides the tall Time Machine, is that Thomas Jefferson's nose looks whacked ( Jefferson is the 2nd from the left for anyone not familiar with American history). But I expect they will work on these kinds of details as table art progresses.

I ( being the kind that is greedy for screen real estate and the largest PF I can score on a mini) am starting to swing for the 2nd render.

You are correct. They will not be able to please everyone. But if they can do two views I think that will cover a lot of objections.

They are in process of getting ready to open their VIP access site. I"m looking forward to this. Think it will be fun to read the developer diaries. I don't know if we will get to BS about it there but it will be fun if we can. See you there?

Yes, I will certainly be there and looking forward to the VIP forum too and like to see some interaction with the developers. Hope to see lots of cab owners there.

As stated here, just an awesome release.

Noah:  Is it a good idea to maybe merge these two threads?

Is there no spin on the ball?

I believe I read this is using the old physics. There is a physics upgrade coming sometime in the future and I think it's supposed to have ball spin, but it's not ready yet. No idea when it will be, I gather after all the other platforms are released. Although ball spin and other improvements will be good to see, what they have provided today because of their impeccable flipper physics is IMHO extremely acceptable.

I've played the iOS version now, it feels very much like a more refined VP, like a comfortable old shoe, and it plays pretty well. This also means though that the same criticisms can be made towards it from Future Pinball enthusiasts; no real-time camera view, no ball spin, no bounces or jumps from the playfield surface, and the only omission that I really missed which I hope they'll rectify, no ability to tap-pass or similarly manipulate the flippers at anything less than full strength every time.

This is a product with a huge amount of potential though. More than ever, I really hope I can get a chance to license the engine and/or develop my own games for it.

I didn't think I could see spin, just looked like one light source on the ball (Found it hard to see from video).

Win/Mac version must top this by a fair whack, has to be big limitations on this for mobile devices surely.

Like Loaf says if there is improvements coming, like air balls, spins and real flippers , you definitely would've more faith in this lot getting it done and sticking to their word.

Checked it out on my iPad.  It does look great! It plays pretty well even with the above mentioned items.
