Getting closer! I downloaded and unzipped VP9.12 The address is C:\Program Files\Visual Pinball\Tables\VPinball912._Full

I finally am able to access the Bow and Arrow table from the VP editor. However, it looks crude and unfinished. When I clicked on Table -> Play, I got a message that the program was loading, then my computor froze!

Yes, I extracted the vpt and hta files to my tables directory:

1. C:\Program Files\Visual Pinball\Tables\Bow___Arrow_VP9_1.03\Bow_and_Arrow_VP9_1.03.vpt

AND

2. C:\Program Files\Visual Pinball\Tables\Bow___Arrow_VP9_1.03\B&A_JP_VP9.hta

The rom should be in the roms directory, not in the tables directory. It won't hurt to have it in both places, but for the table to run it must be in the roms directory.

Which version of VP9 are you using to try to open this table? I would suggest trying the newest version (VP9.12) as that is the most recent. Don't try to open this with VP8.1. It may open but it will not run properly I would think. Currently VPinball.exe is VP8.1 if I recall the installation package contents correctly.

Also, just to make sure (and please forgive the dumb question), you have extracted the vpt and hta files to your tables directory, correct?

You're headed in the right direction!

You said you were running XP. What video card do you have? How much memory is on the video card (not system memory)? That could be a factor to solving the issue.

Good questions. The computer that I use is an IBM ThinkPad laptop. I do not know what video card I have and I don't know how to find out - I would greatly appreciate suggestions.

I do not know how much memory is on the video card. How do I find out about this?

As usual, thank you very much for your help.
Dennis

What you can do is go to the Control Panel then click on display. When that form pops up, click on the settings tab then click on the advanced button. When that form pops up click on the adapter tab and that will give you the information. (NOTE: I'm giving you the procedure I use on my laptop to find out that information) Which model of Thinkpad do you have?

I have a feeling you have one of those integrated Intel chipsets, as that is what my Dell laptop (Inspiron E1405) has. Not much you can do with those integrated chipsets. Anyway, what I usually have to do with VP is uncheck the HD Render checkbox and select 1024 max image texture dimension size when I play VP on the laptop. I don't know if you tried that combination though.

just checking.
are you using pinmame or the vip(visual install pack)3click?
might be better to use the 3 click at www.pinballnirvana.com.
all the folders are in the 3 click.

right click in the vip3click.
extract all.
use the browse to install the 3click into C/Programfiles.

for 2.3pinmame.
the pinmame configs are true to the 3click.
right click on the 2.3pinmame folder.
extract all.
use the browse to overwrite the outdated 2.1 pinmame in the 3click to C/programfiles/pinball.

use the browse to install the vp8/vp9 desktop execs to C/program files/pinball.
right click on the vp8/vp9 desktop execs.
use the browse to install to C/programfiles/pinball
after installing right click on the silver ball.
send to desktop.
this is your shortcut.

go into the forum.
open visual pinball.
type installing.
look for installing vp8.1/vp905/907.
it works for all vp8/vp9 desktop execs..

i found the link.

Thanks for the info.

Here is what I get:

Adapter type:
S3 Graphics SuperSavage/IXC 1014

Adapter Information:
Chip Type: S3 Super Savage/IX
DAC Type: S3 Graphics SDAC
Memory Size: 16 MB
Adapter String: S3 Graphics Compatible Display Adapter
Bios Information: 5.2E.51.26

I went to video options and the HD Rendering checkbox was unchecked. I switched to 1024 Max Texture Dimension. I still get the same result: crude and unfinished table. I have not clicked Table -> Play yet - should I?

Yes, by all means!

What you are seeing is the table in the editor the way the author would see it when he is building the table or editing the table to make adjustments, fixes, etc. You need to click on the play button to acutally ge the table fully rendered (or viewed with the graphics, etc.) and be able to play the table. Just because it looks crude and unfinished in the editor does not mean that the table is not playable or look that way when you click the play button. Try clicking the Play button (or press F5) to try to play the table and see what happens.

If this will help you, and I apologize for not telling you this before, is to read the Installation Guide that is here on the forums. This guide will explain the ins and outs about the software, how to load and run a table, plus other tips to enhance your experience. The guide can be found at this link:

http://www.vpforums....u...l&f_id=2990

Looking at your specs for that graphics card, you will need to run VP with the HD Render box unchecked and the max texture set to 1024. Try it with those options set that way and see what happens when you click the play button.
Hope this helps you.

Still stuck, sorry to keep bothering you.

When I click on play, I get the usual messages "Initializing Physics", "Rendering Table", etc. Then I get the Preparing Table window and the blank VP editor starts again. At this point, my computer freezes up.

It may open but it will not run properly I would think. Currently VPinball.exe is VP8.1 if I recall the installation package contents correctly.

Also, just to make sure (and please forgive the dumb question), you have extracted the vpt and hta files to your tables directory, correct?

When your computer "freezes up" as you say, I am wondering if the following form is hidden behind the editor window:

Try to minimize the editor window after pressing the play button and when the computer stops working to see if that form is hidden behind the window. Click on the Yes I Am radio button and press OK. You should be able to play the table then. However, you will only see that form the first time you play the table. The next time you play the table you should not see that form again.

I can't control the computer after I press play, so I cannot know if the form is hidden behind the editor window. I forgot to mention that after I press play and wait a few minutes, get the rotating lights (the 1000, 2000, 3000 OPENS GATE, etc. lights) from the Bow and Arrow table, but thats it.

I been thinking about what chas has mentioned, using the 3click at www.pinballnirvana.com However, I cannot do that right now because the wi-fi connection I currently use for access to the internet does not allow me to visit pinball nirvana (when I try I get the message: Your page is blocked due to a security policy that prohibits access to Category Games...boo!)

Suggestions? Thanks

The next time you play the table you should not see that form again.

overwrite the old pinmame with the latest.

use the install guide i posted in the thread to install the vp8/vp9 desktop execs.

Have you tried to download the VP Installer from this website? It is a little different from the Pinball Nirvana installer but will do the same thing. You can download it from here:

http://www.vpforums....aller_1_0_3.zip

If you do try the installer, I'd erase your current VP setup (save the table and rom to another location) then redownload VP9.12 and VPinMAME 2.3 (as it instructs you to do in the Installation Guide I'd linked you to previously).

I am reinstalling VP. I downloaded VP 9.1.2 Standalone and I am at "according to your Windows version, apply the "run as administrator" and "compatibility mode" settings to VPinball912.exe, as described earlier."

I do not understand the according to your Windows version, apply the "run as administrator" and "compatibility mode" settings to VPinball912.exe, as described earlier How do I do this? This is where I may have made a mistake. I am at the address C:\Program Files\Visual Pinball\Tables\VPinball912_Minimal The VPinball912.exe is at this address along with Changelot.txt and FreeImage.dll

What do I do next to get the "run as administrator" and "compatibility mode" so I can apply it?

Thanks for all your help
Dennis

UPDATE: I realize that I am using Windows XP so I assume that I don't do the "run as administrator" and "compatibility mode". So, I instead right clicked on VPinball912.exe, then properties, then Compatibility, then chose Windows NT 4.0 (Service Pack 5). Is this the correct thing to do? I am not sure if I did this the first time I installed VP.

You can use the compatability mode of NT 4.0 Service Pack 5 if you have to. I am running XP myself and don't have to use it, but it depends upon the system you have. I recall several years ago on an old P3 I had I had to use Windows 98 compatability mode to run VP efficiently, but since I've upgraded several times since then I don't need compatability mode.

Bottom line, if you can get it to work using NT 4.0 Service Pack 5 compatability mode, use it.

For reference only, I have an IBM A31 thinkpad with 1g ram p4 2.0 with 16 mb v memory and it will run almost all VP8 and some VP9 (older versions such as 9.05). So this laptop should run something. I used Gamebooster from cnet.com to shut down unneccessary thing in the background.

sorry TA,
did not see it.
i would be on the forum all day reading everything.

just a suggestion.
maybe try internet options.
look at security tab, content and cookies.
put all settings on default.
in advanced settings click on "restore advanced settings" then restart.
i used wifi sometimes.
did not have that problem.
some websites might do that if security, cookies and content settings are too high.
