I started WWF Royal Rumble using VP9 and will finish it using VP9. I have had absolutely ZERO issues with it. In fact, it's so much easier for lights and dropwall animation, I have no desire to use VP8 again.

So, I'm not sure what the problem is with VP9, but I love it and it will only get better. smile.gif

The problem will be when you release the table and people post that they can't play it. smile.gif The table plays perfectly fine for me, so I can't fix problems that I don't have.

I'll be releasing two versions...

One will be with Hardware Rendering enabled using large BMPs for the best possible imagery.

The other, a "lite" version using JPG's and no hardware rendering. It takes about 5 minutes to convert the HR version to lite.

Problem solved.

Could you explain this more? I only used Bmp files for a few small decals, everything else is jpg, so what would be the difference? How do you even test your table in VP9 when the the stacked reels don't work?

I'm referring to WWF Royal Rumble, which has no overlapping reels.

I used large BMP images for everything. With hardware rendering enabled, there is no fading effect or white surfaces that have been seen without it.

To run a table with it enabled, check the hardware rendering box to enable it and resave the table. Then close, reopen, and load the table. It will then run with hardware rendering checked. The rendering will be much smoother, especially around targets that have transparent backgrounds.

I will save Royal Rumble with JPGs and no hardware rendering, and it will be playable on systems that can't use hardware rendering.

That sounds like something the people who can't play a table need to learn to do, rather than having 2 versions hosted for a simple trick. Do we have a thread for all of these tips? I don't read the VP cabinet threads, so I may be missing some of this stuff. I can't imagine newbies having a clue, since they would automatically think VP9 should be used, since it's newer then VP8. This is also part of the hobby nightmare I was referring to.

Some systems will simply not be able to run the hi res version, so I chose to make a lo res version for lower systems. It's not a simple trick, but system limitations.

Thanks Noah! I'm not too techy. I ran that file and it did solve my problem of the ball shadow, but that doesn't mean I understand what is happening. unknw.gif

If you used round targets, you should see MUCH smoother rendering around the edges.

Sorry to go off-topic on you, but it should help those having troubles.

It's not off-topic if you can help people play these tables. Tables are useless without players and I'm just not seeing much activity in the playing department. It seems like a lot of people are just in Limbo waiting for something that may never come along....

People are like me, I guess: they are not understanding the fact that VP9 is absolutely not an update of VP8, but a new engine, having nothing to do with VP8. It would have been less confusing to rename it.
I tried many times VP9, and I have ONLY problems with it :
  • terrific slowdowns
  • hang of my computer
  • crashes
  • slow motion without any obvious reason
  • framerate horrible
  • etc etc
Thus, my computer is very powerful...
  • 2 Gigs of memory DDRAM
  • BiPentium 4 cadenced 3.00 GHz
  • NVidia Geforce 7100 GS
  • Monitor LG L1921 21' with a very small latency time
  • Windows XP Pro Pack 2

I don't care to have but to give, I don't care to be if I can't share what I am and what I have

Correct VP9 is actually a commercial hack of VP7, nothing to do with VP8 at all, this is easy to certify, via the VP spinner object. That aside for such a release, where the heck is the what's new, what's changed documentation?

Hey Bob, I fiddled with it a little more and got it to work. I disabled direct draw in vp-man, unchecked hardware rendering, then SAVED THE TABLE, CLOSE VP, OPENED IT - that final step was the trick. I kind of feel stupid, cause it was an easy fix if I would have searched a little more. But this was the first table I had to do it on.

dblthumb.gif Anyways - awesome table, like it a lawt dblthumb.gif

Yes, it is confusing. I thought maybe it should be called, "VP PWC Version X.XXX"

It does have it's merits though..... I like a lot of things about it, but the nudge seems strictly for the PWC, but I can live with my adjustments, it would just be nice if the table moved when we nudged. I would think this could easily be done visually with just changing the table's x,y position without effecting the ball.

Shooby Doo, I'm glad you got it to work! That is what makes off-topic discussion extremely useful. Table comments can often lead to good things. smile.gif

Jive, keep trying and I'm sure VP9 will work for you. I'm afraid it's the only piece of VP software that will ever get updated, so we need to treat it like a Christmas present. clapping.gif

The flippers are really nice in VP9. dblthumb.gif

Jive, your PC specs are far greater than mine, and I see an increase in performance with VP9!

What version of DirectX do you have? Have you tried running the tables with Hardware Rendering checked? If you see white plastics, check Hardware Rendering, save the table, close VP9, reopen VP9, load the table, and run it with it checked.

That worked well for me.

I have had no ball skip, no slowdown, and great performance.

Hey Bob,

Now that you're enjoying Fullscreen VP9 tables, are you going to convert Mars Attacks soon?

I actually converted it to Fullscreen for my pinball PC a while ago but I never uploaded it. Now that Bob is interested in Fullscreen tables, I'll wait to see if he wishes to convert and upload it himself. wink.gif

Best Regards,
Todd.

p.s. I even made a Hyperpin wheel logo - it's already in the wheel forum postings and I made a mock-up backglass from one of the movie posters.

Hey Todd, could you email me or upload your version somewhere and give me the link, so I could look at it?

I do want to play my tables in FS, but I'm still in the process of learning stuff and I want to check other peoples tables and have a Hyperpin setup of my favorite tables first, so I can show it off for company. smile.gif

Also, this table doesn't use ROMs, so I don't think there is a way to put textboxes for scores on the backglass yet. This should be easy for someone to figure out, since I already know the score, I just need to get it to the second monitor.
