Can someone validate my setup please?

6 total 144/m strips.

1 down the right side

4 cut in half and zig-zagging to make an 8 x 72 matrix

1 down the left side

I am injecting power at the beginning of each strip, including the first one where it also connects to the Teensy/Octo board combo

I've got all of that done, but with the Cat6 cable, the orange/white goes to the data wire for the strip, but do I need to plug anything else in from the Teensy/Octo board?  I was worried about connecting the white/orange wire from the CAT6 to the LED strip since it will also be, basically, directly connected to the - (negative) that goes to the power supply.

Can someone just let me know if I am OK with just the Orange/white being connected for data or do I need to do something different?

Thanks a ton. I am so close to finally powering up the computer yet tonight, and I am hoping to connect everything but the power (wired, but won't turn on yet) and the CAT6 until I know for sure.

Hey Nick, Pure Orange goes to data, Orange/White striped is ground and should tie into ground from the PSU at the strip, then 5v comes from the PSU by itself to the strip. You will want to inject power at the left side strip, matrix , and at the right side strip.

OK.  Thanks.  Sounds like what I planned on (My particular Ethernet cable has Orange/Whit(stripe)  and White/Orange (stripe), but I know what you mean by pure orange.

Thanks.

So just "ignore" the red V+ from the 3pin connector because the power is coming from the other red wire, right?

Yes you can have power from either end or both if you want

I have been having one heck of a time getting this working.  I've had someone looking over things for me, but we are stumped.  I started hitting a level of frustration today that I ended up screwing up a whole strip of 144/m LEDs getting desperate.  That made me stop, take a(nother) deep breath, and step back for a bit.  Before doing anything else rash, I wanted to ask a question.

Do I need to supply power directly to the OCTO board?

What should be "flashed" to the Teensy?  When running the teensy.exe app it shows the latest thing loaded to it.  I've put on the fast and slow blink tests and they are fine.  I then loaded a couple of different things.  It is currently showing TeensyStripController as the last thing loaded.  Is that what it should be?

FYI that my problem is that I don't get a single LED to light up.

I know that I posted my physical config previously, but here it is:

On the Right and Left side of playfield are 144/m LED strips (one for each side).

In between them in the standard "zig-zag" is 8 rows of 72 LEDs (half 144/m strips).

I've injected 5v power to the start of every strip, and everything is daisy chained starting on the right front.

The arrows flow correctly too.

I checked my ethernet cable, and even tried using the green instead of orange based off of something I found elsewhere via google.

Actually, it seems like the physical LEDs are wired up perfectly as I bought a cheap $16 LED controller from Amazon for testing purposes, and using that instead of the Teensy lets me control all of the LEDs.  Well, sort of...Looks like I have an LED that was DOA and not letting the signal past it.  Unfortunately I bought the strips too long ago to get a replacement, but I've managed to bypass that LED for now and it all works (It was a cheap strip that got mediocre reviews.)  I am going to replace it with one that matches my now fried right side strip since it was really nice, when it worked with the other controller.

So for testing, I have a different LED strip (that I had purchased for a different project a couple of years ago that I never got around to) connected up by itself with 5v power to act as my temporary.  It is a longer strip, but with significantly less density (4meters at 60LED/m, so 240 total LEDs).  I don't know if the 5V injected power is enough to light all of that, but it is enough to light a bunch of it for testing.

For now, I am going to button things back up into the cabinet, and play a few games as a stress reliever.  I've been monkeying with this for several hours today alone, and 2 hours yesterday, a couple of hours 2 other days earlier this week, plus the reading of everything and monkeying around with my initial "hmmm, why isn't this working" bit for a few other days.  I'd say that I have spent 20+ hours and feel like I am no closer to getting it working.  It is (hopefully) probably something simple... Like the time I realized that I didn't change the COM port in the cabinet.xml from COM3 (from the example) to COM4 which is what it is in Windows.

Maybe it is the DOF settings (which only has settings for the right PF strip)?  Maybe it is something funky elsewhere.  I plan on trying another Ethernet cable, but I doubt that is a problem since I used a known good cable, but at this point I am desperate.

Any answers to my questions at the top would be helpful.   Thanks.

Have you checked that all your soldering is okay on the teensy I’ve read a few people have had an issue there. I’m about to embark on this too so can’t help more than that

I broke out the voltmeter today as well and did my best to check continuity between solder on one end to the solder on the other without directly touching the pins themselves.  Seemed to work for all of them.  It was hard touching just the solder though.

I used this soldering station:

Aoyue937g-768x350.jpg

And I've done quite a bit of soldering of small electronic parts, circuit boards, and LEDs (besides the strips for this project).  It doesn't mean that something couldn't have been off a touch, thus the reason I tried to test for continuity today as well.  I guess I could always give each connection a light touch with the iron just to make sure, but the solder connections are actually pretty nice and not a sloppy mess, so they "should" be good. LOL

It looks like you are missing some settings for the Teensy in your cabinet XML

The only thing I'm using is ledwiz and the Teensy so the only information in my cabinet XML file is for the Teensy

Spoiler

You forgett:

<LedWizEquivalent>

     <LedWizEquivalentOutputNumber>1</LedWizEquivalentOutputNumber>
    </LedWizEquivalentOutput>
    </Outputs>
   <LedWizNumber>30</LedWizNumber>
   </LedWizEquivalent>

After that you have to setup your Port 1 of the teensy controller in DOFConfigTool to a mx effect

look at my manual:

Thanks guys.  I'll compare things to my cabinet.xml tonight and check out that manual too.  My wife had a old college friend in town that should have allowed me to have plenty of free time this weekend to work on this.  Instead, I've been their chauffeur and chef.  I've been expected to do everything that they have been doing all day, and I told my wife that now that it is 9:50pm, I need to spend some time on this. LOL

I have my left side playfield running, but my matrix and right side are not working. Below is my wiring diagram, thin line is data line, thick is direction of strip. I am injecting power at all the strips and twice on the matrix. I have tested continuity and voltage with a multimeter, I get 5v and have continuity around the whole cabinet. I am hoping this is a software thing and not a bad led breaking it. I did test to make sure the data line from the end of the left side has continuity to the beginning of the matrix. I am running one continuous data line from left to middle to right.

Should all these statements be the same for each section sends you have one continuous feed.... Just a guess

Thats the order the strip is set in, they can be different per strip (I have seen in other peoples examples). I am using this picture from the Faq to set order. Thanks for looking though, this is driving me batty.

Ok I made a little headway , I copied Terry's cabinet file and now the left side works and the matrix works, but not the right side. So it is looking like an issue in the cabinet file.....here is the new one I created using his.

It looks like you are missing some settings for the Teensy in your cabinet XML

The only thing I'm using is ledwiz and the Teensy so the only information in my cabinet XML file is for the Teensy

Spoiler

So my wife's friend ended up staying an extra day and a half, and I was assigned all sorts of "fun" stuff.  Yay.  So I am finally looking at this today and have a could of questions before I change some things.

My LED orientation is like this:

1) So I should define the PF Right <FirstLedNumber> as '1', my PF Left <FirstLedNumber> as '721', and my PF Back <FirstLedNumber> as '145', right?

2) Also, should I set the PF Back <LedStripArrangement> to 'RightLeftAlternateBottomUp' per this diagram?

3) What about the left and right strips?  Are they both 'BottomUpLeftRight' like a lot of people seem to have?  That seems wrong to me for my setup, which is why I ask.

4) Next question is does it matter what order I list the <LedStrip> chunks in?  By that, should I list those code blocks with PF Right, then PF Back, and then PF Left since that is the "flow" of the LEDs, or does that not matter as long as the starting LED, width, and height are correct?

5) Last question (for now) is for the top chunk of code under <TeensyStripController> where it lists the <NumberOfLedsStrip1>, <NumberOfLedsStrip2>, <NumberOfLedsStrip3> and so forth.  Should those be in the order of "flow" for me, so Strip1 is '144', Strip2 is '576', and Strip3 is '144'?

Thanks everyone.

Thank you so much.

As for #5 I originally had just 1 entry for the total LEDs, I will be sure that it stays that way.
